Addressing the Consequences of School Closure Due to COVID-19 on Children's Physical and Mental Well-Being.

Prolonged school closures are one of the most disruptive forces in the COVID-19 era. School closures have upended life for children and fami … on how important schools are for meeting children's nonacademic needs. We argue that when students return to school there will be a more acute and wider-spread need for school-based nonacademic services and supports. Further, we expect that COVID-19 will serve as a focusing event opening a window of opportunity for programmatic and policy change that improves non …

Pilot study of a high-frequency school-based hearing screen to detect adolescent hearing loss.

OBJECTIVE: Like most of the United States, school-based hearing screening in Pennsylvania focuses on low-frequency, conductive hearing losses typical for young children, rather than the high-frequency, noise-induced hearing loss more prevalent among adolescents. The objective of this study was to compare the sensitivity and specificity of current school hearing screening in Pennsylvania with hearing screening including high frequencies, designed to detect adolescent hearing loss. SETTING: A single public high school. METHODS: In the Autumn of 2011 the high-frequency screen was delivered alon

Short-term parent reported recovery following open and laparoscopic fundoplication.

BACKGROUND: It is assumed that children recover faster after laparoscopic (LF) than after open fundoplication (OF). As this has not been confirmed in any randomized study (RCT), we have in a subsection of a larger RCT compared parent reported recovery of children after LF and OF. METHODS: Postoperative symptoms, use of analgesics, overall well-being, and time to return to school/day-care were recorded in a subsection of children enrolled in a RCT comparing LF and OF. Ethical approval and parental consent were obtained. RESULTS: Fifty-five children (LF: n = 27, OF: n = 28) of the 88 enrolled …

"How can our children learn from us about our way of life or understand who they are?": Residential schools and their impact on the wellbeing of Indigenous youth in Attapadi, South India.

Residential schools are commonly used in India to provide education for Indigenous youth, which requires young people to stay for long periods at distance from their families and communities. Internationally, there is clear evidence for the deleterious effects of residential schools on the mental health and social and community outcomes of Indigenous children, however little is known about the Indian Indigenous experience. This study examined the impact of residential schooling on Indigenous children's wellbeing and that of their communities, using data from an ethnographic research project in

Interventions for autumn exacerbations of asthma in children.

BACKGROUND: Asthma exacerbations in school-aged children peak in autumn, shortly after children return to school following the summer holiday. This might reflect a combination of risk factors, including poor treatment adherence, increased allergen and viral exposure, and altered immune tolerance. Since this peak is predictable, interventions targeting modifiable risk factors might reduce exacerbation-associated morbidity and strain upon health resources. The peak occurs in September in the Northern Hemisphere and in February in the Southern Hemisphere. OBJECTIVES: To assess the effects of pha…

Estimating the human development impacts and economic returns from an adolescent cash 'plus' programme in Kenya: An economic modelling study.

The Government of Kenya plans to scale-up an adolescent-focused cash 'plus' programme to improve educational attainment and prevent adolescent pregnancy. We aimed to estimate the programme's impacts, economic returns, and cost-effectiveness using model-based economic evaluation. We modelled the delivery of conditional cash transfers 'plus' adolescent clubs, community conversations, parenting support and psychosocial support to poor adolescents in nine selected counties from 2026 to 2029. Two scenarios were compared: a baseline in which intervention variables remained constant at 2025 levels, a

[Neuropsychological outcome of head injury in children].

Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children-Revised (WISC-R) and Yatabe-Guilford personality test were administered to 31 children who had been hospitalized for head injury and made a GR or MD by the Glasgow Outcome Scale (GOS). The type of lesion, as defined by CT scan categories, was an important factor to prognosticate the outcome of intellectual function. The IQ, especially performance IQ, of acute subdural hematoma (EDH) or severe diffuse brain injury (DBI) was lower than that caused by other types of lesion. Several children demonstrated improvement in IQ level during the initial year. The

Characteristics and Clinical Outcomes Between Sport-Related and Non-Sport-Related Concussions in Youth Athletes.

CONTEXT: Sport-related concussion (SRC) is a well-documented health concern for youth athletes, but less is understood about non-SRCs in this population. Researchers have indicated that non-SRCs may differ from SRCs in symptom severity, health care presentation timing, and recovery, warranting further investigation. OBJECTIVES: To (1) compare demographics, medical history, and symptom profiles and (2) examine differences in recovery metrics among active high school athletes with SRC or non-SRC. DESIGN: Retrospective cohort study. SETTING: Regional specialty concussion center. PATIENTS OR O

Investing in School Mental Health: Strategies to Wisely Spend Federal and State Funding.

In the context of the current youth mental health crisis, it is prudent to reconsider how resources are allocated to facilitate the delivery of effective and comprehensive supports and services to children and adolescents. Schools are the main delivery sites for youth mental health services. Many districts have adopted comprehensive school mental health systems (CSMHS) to provide a multitiered approach comprising mental health promotion, prevention, and intervention to students via partnerships between school and community health and behavioral health providers. COVID-19 relief funding and oth
