Rhombencephalosynapsis is a rare cerebellar malformation that can be associated with anomalies of the cerebral hemispheres and variable degrees of neurodevelopmental delay. A syndromic association, comprising rhombencephalosynapsis, developmental delay, scalp alopecia and trigeminal anaesthesia (Gomez-López-Hernández syndrome) has been described in seven individuals. We report the case of a 2-year-old boy with rhombencephalosynapsis, and review the evidence for a possible diagnosis of Gomez-López-Hernández syndrome. We also discuss other malformations reported in combination with rhombencephal

To test for possible retention of early segmental patterning throughout development, the cranial nerve efferent nuclei in adult ranid frogs were quantitatively mapped and compared with the segmental organization of these nuclei in larvae. Cranial nerve roots IV-X were labeled in larvae with fluorescent dextran amines. Each cranial nerve efferent nucleus resided in a characteristic segmental position within the clearly visible larval hindbrain rhombomeres (r). Trochlear motoneurons were located in r0, trigeminal motoneurons in r2-r3, facial branchiomotor and vestibuloacoustic efferent neurons i

Central nervous system infections due to Listeria monocytogenes result in a variety of clinical syndromes ranging from meningitis to rhomboencephalitis. We report the case of a previously healthy patient with rhomboencephalitis in whom the CT scan was normal, while magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) confirmed the diagnosis. We review the literature and emphasize the value of MRI for timely diagnosis.

In a recent study, Slangewal et al. explored principles of visuomotor decision-making in larval zebrafish. Visuomotor choices were revealed to be largely additive, integrating visual motion, luminance level, and luminance change during cue conflict. Brain-wide imaging mapped parallel feature circuits within the optic tectum that converge in the anterior hindbrain. Single-cell identity and morphology analyses refined this map, linking behavioral algorithms to candidate circuit implementations.

The number of known developmental disorders affecting the hindbrain is rapidly increasing due to advances in neuroimaging and genetic technologies. Nevertheless, it remains largely unknown why the development of the hindbrain is affected in many genetic disorders. We aim to unveil new insights into the biological pathways essential for hindbrain development by investigation of the pathogenetics of hindbrain abnormalities. In this work, an updated gene list of abnormalities of the hindbrain was generated, and genes were subsequently grouped according to most prevalent association in (1) predomi

Verbal adynamia is characterized by markedly reduced spontaneous speech that is not attributable to a core language deficit such as impaired naming, reading, repetition, or comprehension. In some cases, verbal adynamia is severe enough to be considered dynamic aphasia. We report the case of a 40-year-old, left-handed, male native English speaker who presented with partial rhombencephalosynapsis, corpus callosum dysgenesis, and a language profile that is consistent with verbal adynamia, or subclinical dynamic aphasia, possibly underpinned by difficulties selecting and generating ideas for expre

The initial development of the cranial nerves was studied in 245 human embryos of stages 10-23 (4-8 postfertilizational weeks). Significant findings in the human embryo include the following. (1) Neuronal migration is a characteristic feature in the development of all the cranial nerves at stages 13-18, with the exception of the somatic efferent group. (2) The somatic efferent and the visceral efferent neurons are arranged respectively in ventrolateral and ventromedial columns (stages 13-17). (3) The ventrolateral column gives rise to somatic efferent nuclei; the neurons of the hypoglossal ner

Although there may be a hereditary component to true idiopathic scoliosis, the condition has no known cause and is not associated with dysraphism. However, scoliosis with an associated syrinx, with or without the Chiari I malformation, sometimes presents as an idiopathic-type curve. Physical examination findings and subtle clues on diagnostic imaging may help the orthopaedic surgeon diagnose scoliosis associated with syringomyelia. Examination findings include asymmetric reflexes and presentation at ages younger than those of patients who present with adolescent idiopathic curves (i.e., 10 to

Rhombencephalosynapsis (RES) is a rare cerebellar malformation of unknown etiology characterized by vermal agenesis or hypogenesis, fusion of hemispheres and the dentate nuclei. Clinical presentation and prognosis are extremely variable and generally depends one the associated supratentorial anomalies. We report the first Tunisian case of RES diagnosed by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in a 3.5-year-old boy born to consanguineous parents. The child had spastic diplegia, facial dysmorphia, skeletal anomalies and normal intellectual development. Additional supratentorial anomalies were agenesi

BACKGROUND: Retinoic acid (RA) is a morphogenetically active signalling molecule thought to be involved in the development of severely embryonic systems (based on its effect when applied in excess and the fact that it can be detected endogenously in embryos). Here, we adopt a novel approach and use the vitamin A-deficient (A-) quail embryo to ask what defects these embryos show when they develop in the absence of RA, with particular reference to the nervous system.
RESULTS: We have examined the anatomy, the expression domains of a variety of genes and the immunoreactivity to several antibodie

We reported a rare case of Listeria rhombencephalitis with meningitis. A 48-year-old healthy man suddenly experienced high fever and headache, then he had lower cranial nerve's palsies and mental dysfunction developed during one week period. On admission, his temperature was 38 degrees C. He was slightly delirious and euphoric. He had nuchal rigidity, mild paresthesia over his left cheek to left upper lip, a right sixth nerve palsy, dysphagia, hiccup, nasal voice and left cerebellar ataxia. His tongue deviated toward the right side on protrusion. A CSF culture grew Listeria monocytogenes. Intr

A 3 1/2-year-old bay gelding of the cob type showed nervous signs and coughing associated with breaking-in and exercise. At post-mortem examination, heavy melanin pigmentation of the meninges of the hind brain and the medulla was identified and, on histological examination, melanin-containing cells were found within connective tissue extending into the medulla. The lesion was considered to be a melanotic hamartoma.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Möbius sequence (MBS) previously known as Möbius syndrome is a rare nonprogressive developmental defect of the rhombencephalon leading to congenital abducens (VIth) and facial (VIIth) nerve palsy. Echoencephalography is the first, safe, noninvasive, and cost-effective imaging modality available at bedside. No study on the use of echoencephalography in neonates for the diagnosis of MBS has been previously reported.
METHODS: In this single tertiary center study, more than 18,000 neonates underwent echoencephalographic imaging over the span of two decades. Imaging was per…

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to show the normal sonographic embryologic anatomy of the cisterna magna septa, fourth ventricle, a … continuum. The cisterna magna septa therefore are a marker of normal development of the roof of the rhombencephalon. Deviation from their normal appearances should prompt a closer assessment for associated abnormalities of the cerebellum, vermis, and brain stem by additional imaging in orthogonal planes with either sonography or magnetic resonance imaging.
