Comparison of outcomes after unplanned conversion for patients undergoing robotic when compared with laparoscopic colectomy.

The robotic approach improves the feasibility of minimally invasive colectomy even where there may be an anatomic challenge with laparoscopy. Whether a failure in completing colectomy with this newer technology is associated with worse consequences needs to be considered when evaluating the relative benefit of robotic colectomy. The aim of this study is to evaluate rates of conversion to open surgery after robotic and laparoscopic colectomy and whether outcomes after conversion vary after the two techniques since this has not been well studied. Surgical team ergonomics during robotic versus conventional laparoscopic surgery: a prospective observational study.

Robotic surgery has been associated with improved ergonomics compared with conventional laparoscopy. However, most studies have focused on the console surgeon, and its impact on other members of the operative team remains poorly understood. We conducted an exploratory prospective observational study with repeated procedure-level assessments including robotic and conventional laparoscopic upper gastrointestinal and colorectal procedures performed from September 2024 to March 2025. After each operation, primary surgeons and surgical assistants completed a structured questionnaire assessing perce

Transitioning From Laparoscopic to Robotic Bariatric Surgery: A Surgeon-Centered Analytic Approach.

INTRODUCTION: Robotic assistance is increasingly adopted by bariatric surgeons with extensive laparoscopic experience. Evidence from pooled data, however, does not help individual surgeons determine whether transitioning to a robotic practice improves outcomes. METHODS: In this retrospective cohort study, we analyzed bariatric procedures performed at 13 centers in the Pacific Northwest between 2011 and 2024. Surgeon-specific laparoscopic learning curves were modeled to estimate expected outcomes for robotic cases had they been performed laparoscopically. Observed robotic outcomes were then co

Surgical robotic arm control for tissue ablation.

In the technology driven era, robot assisted surgery is gradually emerging as a revolutionized surgical procedure over traditional laparoscopic method. Despite the concerns about robotic surgery for minimally invasive surgical procedures, robotized surgical arms have been used in many hospitals. Certain surgical procedures require removal of a segment of an organ or body part like excision biopsy, linear thin layer of soft tissue, triangular mass, and tangential excision in burn management, where shaving-off at an angle of the tissue layer to be removed. For such minimally invasive procedures,

Robotic hormonal and autonomic modulation for type 2 diabetes: ileal interposition and hepatic sympathectomy.

BACKGROUND: Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is a complex disorder involving both hormonal imbalance and autonomic dysfunction. While bariatric surgery enhances glycemic control, its effects on autonomic regulation are limited. OBJECTIVE: This is the first report describing two novel robotic surgical strategies targeting dual physiological mechanisms-hormonal modulation and sympathetic overactivity-to optimize metabolic outcomes in T2DM. The manuscript is intended to spark discussion around future surgical strategies based on two proof-of-concept index cases. METHODS: We present two patients

Robotic thymectomy: a review of techniques and results.

Thymectomy is a well-established therapeutic option in the multidisciplinary treatment of nonthymomatous myasthenia gravis (MG) and in thymoma treatment. Although many surgical procedures for thymectomy have been identified, the transsternal method is still regarded as the gold standard. Minimally invasive procedures, on the other hand, have achieved popularity in the last decades and are now extensively used in this field of surgery. Among them, robotic thymectomy has been the most cutting-edge surgical procedure. Several authors and meta-analyses have shown that a minimally invasive approach

Design, fabrication, and testing of a new soft-pouch robot with 6 degrees of freedom to expand the reach of open and endonasal skull base approaches.

OBJECTIVE: Most robots currently used in neurosurgery aid surgeons in placing spinal hardware and guiding electrodes and biopsy probes toward brain targets. These robots are inflexible, cannot turn corners, and exert excessive force when dissecting and retracting brain tissue, limiting their applicability in cranial base surgery. In this study, the authors present a novel soft-pouch robot prototype driven by compressed air and capable of gentle tissue manipulation. The robot is manufactured with technology developed by the authors, with multiple bidirectional bending points and a miniature cam

Robotic Instruments Inside the MRI Bore: Key Concepts and Evolving Paradigms in Imaging-enhanced Cranial Neurosurgery.

Intraoperative MRI has been increasingly used to robotically deliver electrodes and catheters into the human brain using a linear trajectory with great clinical success. Current cranial MR guided robotics do not allow for continuous real-time imaging during the procedure because most surgical instruments are not MR-conditional. MRI guided robotic cranial surgery can achieve its full potential if all the traditional advantages of robotics (such as tremor-filtering, precision motion scaling, etc.) can be incorporated with the neurosurgeon physically present in the MRI bore or working remotely th
