Optimized Haptic Feedback and Natural Prehension System for Robotics and Virtual Reality Applications.

As robotics prehension systems and virtual reality applications are in constant evolution, the need for high-fidelity haptic interaction increases. This helps ensure and enhance user immersion and handling precision. While commercial haptic interfaces offer high performance, their prohibitive cost limits their widespread adoption in general-purpose robotics. Furthermore, many low-cost solutions suffer from limited transparency, where the operator constantly fights the friction of the actuator even during free motion. This article presents the design and development of an innovative, cost-effec…

Hydrogel-Based Self-powered Sensing for Muscle Activity Monitoring and Safe Rehabilitation Robotics.

Upper-limb motor dysfunction is a common sequela following neurological and orthopedic injuries and can severely impair functional recovery. However, conventional rehabilitation approaches remain limited by subjective assessments and the lack of muscle-specific physiological feedback. In this study, a self-powered adaptive coupled sensing system based on a flexible triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) is developed. The TENG is constructed using a polyvinyl alcohol/sodium alginate/polyacrylamide double-network organohydrogel. This hydrogel serves as both a highly deformable electrode and an effic

Breaking down costs: rehabilitation robotics vs. usual care therapy in diverse healthcare models.

One of the significant barriers to the adoption of rehabilitation robotics into clinical care over the last 30 years has been the high investment costs of the technology. There have been limited efforts to understand the healthcare economics of implementing rehabilitation robotics compared to usual care. From the few studies that have investigated the cost, the findings have had limited generalizability to other clinical settings or contexts due to diverse healthcare models and the complexity of implementation factors. This study compares three organizational models in rehabilitation centers a…

Comparison of strength profile representations using musculoskeletal models and their applications in robotics.

Musculoskeletal models provide an approach towards simulating the ability of the human body in a variety of human-robot applications. A promising use for musculoskeletal models is to model the physical capabilities of the human body, for example, estimating the strength at the hand. Several methods of modelling and representing human strength with musculoskeletal models have been used in ergonomic analysis, human-robot interaction and robotic assistance. However, it is currently unclear which methods best suit modelling and representing limb strength. This paper compares existing methods for c

How Multifunctioning Joints Produce Highly Agile Limbs in Animals with Lessons for Robotics.

This paper reviews how multifunctioning joints produce highly agile limbs in animals with lessons for robotics. One of the key reasons why animals are so fast and agile is that they have multifunctioning joints in their limbs. The multifunctioning joints lead to a high degree of compactness which then leads to a host of benefits such as low mass, low moment of inertia and low drag. This paper presents three case studies of multifunctioning joints-the human wrist joint, knee joint and foot joints-in order to identify how multifunctioning is achieved and what lessons can be learned for robotics.…

Perspiring Soft Robotics Skin Constituted by Dynamic Polarity-Switching Porous Liquid Crystal Membrane.

Secretion of functional fluids is essential for affecting surface properties in ecosystems. The existing polymer membranes that mimic human skin functions are limited to secreting, either apolar or polar, liquid. However, the development of membranes that grant exchange liquid with different polarities remains a grand challenge. This process is prohibited by the mismatch of the polarity between the carrier polymer and the loaded liquid. To conquer this limitation, an innovative strategy is reported to dynamically switch the polarity of the porous membrane, thereby empowering the exchange of ap
