Dynamics of Leishmania infection rates in Rhombomys opimus (Rodentia: Gerbillinae) population of an endemic focus of zoonotic cutaneous leishmaniasis in Iran.

Zoonotic cutaneous leishmaniasis (ZCL) due to Leishmania major is a great public health problem in the Old World. Leishmania major is widely distributed in populations of rodents in arid and savannah regions. In this study, seasonal variation of natural infection with Leishmania parasites in Rhombomys opimus (Rodentia: Gerbillinae) population of an endemic focus of ZCL in Iran was monitored. The study was conducted from October 2007 to October 2008 in the central part of the country. Nested polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assay was used for the detection and identification of Leishmania parasi…

Isolation and characterization of pathogenic Leishmania turanica from Nesokia indica (Rodentia, Muridae) by PCR-RFLP and ITS1 sequencing in Iran.

Zoonotic cutaneous leishmaniasis, primarily an infection of desert rodents, is an important endemic disease in some parts of Iran. In spite of reporting Leishmania infection in Nesokia indica microscopically, its role remains unclear in Iran. We report the first natural infection by Leishmania turanica in a wild-caught N. indica in the west part of Iran, near the border with Iraq. The evidence is in the form of PCR-RFLP testing based on internal transcribed spacer 1 (ITS1) rDNA with HaeIII enzyme and ITS1 sequence analysis. This isolate was highly pathogenic in BALB/c mice and golden hamsters

The parasitism of Schistosoma mansoni (Digenea-Trematoda) in a naturally infected population of water rats, Nectomys squamipes (Rodentia-Sigmodontinae) in Brazil.

Schistosomiasis is a health problem in Brazil and the role of rodents in maintaining the schistosome life-cycle requires further clarification. The influence of Schistosoma mansoni on a population of Nectomys squamipes was studied by capture-recapture (1st phase, from June 1991 to November 1995) and removal (2nd phase, from April 1997 to March 1999) studies at Sumidouro, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. During both phases coproscopic examinations were performed. At the 2nd phase the rodents were perfused and worms were counted. The population dynamics of parasites was studied. During the 1st phase, fem

Morphological and molecular characterization of an undescribed vestibuliferid ciliate from the captive-bred naked mole-rat, Heterocephalus glaber (Rodentia: Bathyergidae).

The intestinal ciliates of the naked mole-rat (Heterocephalus glaber) remain poorly characterized. Previous reports identified a Balantidium or suggested an association with Meiostoma; however, their taxonomic identities have not been verified using morphological and molecular approaches. In March 2024, numerous ciliates were detected in fecal samples from a captive colony of naked mole-rats at a zoo in Japan. The ciliate was characterized using light microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and molecular analyses based on the nuclear ribosomal RNA gene sequences. The ciliate exhibited morpho

Different evolutionary trails in the related genomes Cricetus cricetus and Peromyscus eremicus (Rodentia, Cricetidae) uncovered by orthologous satellite DNA repositioning.

Constitutive heterochromatin comprises a substantial fraction of the eukaryotic genomes and is mainly composed of tandemly arrayed satellite DNAs (satDNA). These repetitive sequences represent a very dynamic and fast evolving component of genomes. In the present work we report the isolation of Cricetus cricetus (CCR, Cricetidae, Rodentia) centromeric repetitive sequences from chromosome 4 (CCR4/10sat), using the laser microdissection and laser pressure catapulting procedure, followed by DOP-PCR amplification and labelling. Physical mapping by fluorescent in situ hybridisation of these sequence…

Fecundity of Hoplopleura scapteromydis (Phthiraptera: Anoplura, Hoplopleuridae), ectoparasite of Scapteromys aquaticus (Rodentia: Muridae) in Rio de La Plata marshlands, Argentina.

Density and age structure of lice collected from captured Scapteromys aquaticus rodents were studied to estimate the fecundity of Hoplopleura scapteromydis. The number of eggs with a visible embryo inside (E), nymphs (N), adult males (AM), and adult females (AF) were recorded for each rodent. For the ith rodent, the fecundity of H. scapteromydis, F(i), was estimated as F(i) = [[E(i) + N(i)]/2]/AF(i)/T, where T represents the period of preimaginal development (unknown and arbitrarily considered as T = 1), and the sex ratio of the preimaginal stages was supposed to be 1:1. Two new subgenera of chewing lice (Phthiraptera: Trichodectidae) from pocket gophers (Rodentia: Geomyidae), with a key to all included taxa.

The new subgenera Thaelerius and Jamespattonius are described, respectively, for the eight species of Geomydoecus in the thomomyus complex of lice and the four species of Thomomydoecus in the wardi complex. Except for T. byersi Hellenthal & Price from Thomomys bottae (Eydoux & Gervais), these lice are restricted to the Thomomys talpoides (Richardson) complex of pocket gophers and are the only lice found on these hosts. A key is given for the identification of the currently recognized 122 taxa of pocket gopher lice.

[Ecoepidemiology of leishmaniasis in Syria. 1. Leishmania major Yakimoff and Schokhor (Kinetoplastida-Trypanosomatidae) infestation of Psammomys obesus Cretzschmar (Rodentia-Gerbillidae)].

During an epidemiological survey of zoonotic cutaneous leishmaniasis in South-West Syria, Leishmania major zymodème MON-26 was isolated from a reservoir host, Psammomys obesus terraesanctae (Rodentia-Gerbillidae). The abundance of this rodent, its close contact with infected villages and the high prevalence of the infection (63,1%) indicate that this is the main reservoir host of oriental sore in the semi desert area of this country.

Some Tuco-Tucos Hide More Than Others: An Integrative Approach Reveals Cryptic Diversity in Ctenomys (Rodentia: Ctenomyidae) From Central Argentina.

The diversity of the subterranean rodent genus Ctenomys remains incompletely understood, particularly in regions characterized by complex biogeographic histories. Central Argentina (Sierras de Córdoba and adjacent lowlands) represents a major zone of biotic convergence, yet its role in shaping diversification patterns within Ctenomys has received limited attention. Here, we adopt an integrative framework (molecular phylogenetics and geometric morphometrics) to reassess patterns of diversity and differentiation across this region. We analyzed cytochrome b sequences and quantified cranial shape

Changes on Schistosoma mansoni (Digenea: Schistosomatidae) worm load in Nectomys squamipes (Rodentia: Sigmodontinae) concurrently infected with Echinostoma paraensei (Digenea: Echinostomatidae).

The water rat, Nectomys squamipes, closely involved in schistosomiasis transmission in Brazil, has been found naturally infected simultaneously by Schistosoma mansoni and Echinostoma paraensei. Laboratory experiments were conducted to verify parasitic interaction in concurrent infection. It was replicated four times with a total of 42 water rats and essayed two times with 90 mice pre-infected with E. paraensei. Rodents were divided into three groups in each replication. A wild strain recently isolated from Sumidouro, RJ, and a laboratory strain of S. mansoni from Belo Horizonte (BH) was used.

Morphological identification and phylogenetic analysis of Eimeria coypi and Eimeria fluviatilis (Apicomplexa: Eimeriidae) isolated from nutrias (Myocastor coypus [Rodentia]) in Japan.

The nutria (Myocastor coypus) is a semiaquatic rodent that originally inhabited South America. However, the animals have spread to different continents as alien species, and their numbers are quickly increasing, especially in North America, Europe, and Eastern Asia including Japan. Although nutrias have been suggested to serve as reservoirs for pathogens, including parasites, there have been few reports on this subject. In the present study, we surveyed the gastrointestinal parasites in nutrias living in Japan to better understand their prevalence in nutrias. We collected 72 samples of intesti

Comparison of Chiggers (Acari: Trombiculidae, Leeuwenhoekiidae) on Two Sibling Mouse Species, Apodemus draco and A. ilex (Rodentia: Muridae), in Southwest China.

Chigger mites (Acari) are common ectoparasites on rodents, and they are the exclusive vector of scrub typhus. South China field mouse (Apodemus draco) and Lantsang field mouse (A. ilex) are two sibling rodent species. Based on field investigations in southwest China (2001-2015), this paper compared the infestation of these two mouse species with chiggers. Of 42 chigger species identified from two mouse species, 36 were found on A. draco, 11 on A. ilex and 5 common species on both mice. Jaccard similarity index (J = 0.12, J < 0.25) showed a very different species composition of chiggers on two

First detection of Leishmania killicki (Kinetoplastida, Trypanosomatidae) in Ctenodactylus gundi (Rodentia, Ctenodactylidae), a possible reservoir of human cutaneous leishmaniasis in Tunisia.

BACKGROUND: Leishmania killicki was originally described in 1980 in southeast Tunisia. It was also recently reported in Lybia and Algeria. Nevertheless, neither vector nor reservoirs of this parasite are known. The identification of the vector and the animal reservoir host of L. killicki is critical for the establishment of an efficient control strategy. FINDINGS: blood, popliteal lymph node, spleen, bone marrow, liver and skin were collected from 50 rodents in 2009 in south western Tunisia. Samples were smeared onto glass slides, cultured on NNN medium and tested by polymerase chain reaction
