Type 1 Diabetes Management and Health Care Experiences Across Rural Nebraska.

INTRODUCTION: This study aimed to explore the unique health care needs of rural Nebraska families with a child with type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM). METHOD: Using a phenomenological approach, the researchers conducted four focus groups across Nebraska. The focus groups gathered input from children, caregivers, and health care providers (n = 23). The researchers coded data and generated themes. Member checking, researcher triangulation, reflexivity, a thick description of the process, and an audit trail established trustworthiness. RESULTS: Four themes emerged: dramatic family and lifestyle c

Mental health among rural Latino immigrants during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The mental health of the United States' Latino population significantly deteriorated during the SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19) pandemic, and Latino immigrants living in rural areas faced unique vulnerabilities. However, few studies have specifically examined the mental health burden and experiences of rural Latino immigrants during the COVID pandemic. To understand the mental health experiences of first- and second-generation Latinos in rural areas, we conducted semi-structured interviews with 35 Latino residents of rural California counties during July 2020-February 2021 and screened all respondents f

Understanding Giardia infections among rural communities using the one health approach.

The epidemiology of giardiasis in rural villages in Peninsular Malaysia was examined in the context of the One Health triad that encompasses humans, animals and environment (i.e. river water). A cross-sectional study was carried out among five rural communities in Malaysia to determine the prevalence of Giardia duodenalis in humans, animals and river water. Fecal samples collected from humans and animals were examined by light microscopy. Water was sampled from the rivers adjacent to the target communities and investigated for the occurrence of Giardia cysts. The isolated cysts were further ge

Racial/Ethnic Health Disparities Among Rural Adults - United States, 2012-2015.

PROBLEM/CONDITION: Rural communities often have worse health outcomes, have less access to care, and are less diverse than urban communities. Much of the research on rural health disparities examines disparities between rural and urban communities, with fewer studies on disparities within rural communities. This report provides an overview of racial/ethnic health disparities for selected indicators in rural areas of the United States. REPORTING PERIOD: 2012-2015. DESCRIPTION OF SYSTEM: Self-reported data from the 2012-2015 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System were pooled to evaluate ra…

Food Insecurity and Rural Adolescent Personal Health, Home, and Academic Environments.

BACKGROUND: Food-insecure (FIS) adolescents struggle in school and with health and mental health more often than food-secure (FS) adolescents. Rural communities experience important disparities in health, but little is known about rural FIS adolescents. This study aims to describe select characteristics of rural adolescents by food-security status. METHODS: Baseline analysis using data from a randomized trial to increase school breakfast participation (SBP) in rural Minnesota high schools. Students completed a survey regarding food security, characteristics, and home and school environments.

Association between job characteristics and health behaviors in Japanese rural workers.

Associations between job characteristics defined by the Karasek's job demand-control model and health behaviors were investigated in a cross-sectional analysis of 6,759 Japanese rural workers. High psychological demands were associated with heavy smoking, exaggerated prevalence of alcohol drinking, and high work-related physical activity. Low job control was associated with lower consumption of vegetables, a smaller quantity number of cigarettes smoked, and a low level of work-related physical activity. Job strain, a combined measure obtained from the ratio of demands to control, was associate

Taking charge of self: breast health practices of older rural women.

The purpose of this grounded theory study was to explore breast health practices of older Vermont women residing in rural communities. Although the three components of breast health-mammography, clinical breast exam, and self-breast exam-are recommended for women 40 years and over, minimal research has empirically analyzed the breast health practices of healthy women to ascertain if, in fact, these procedures are followed, and if so, what the motivation is for doing so. Twelve women, 50-64 years, participated in face-to-face, audiotaped interviews. Data analysis, including line-by-line and con

Does training of Health Extension Workers reduce scabies load in district health facilities in rural Ethiopia?

INTRODUCTION: In 2017, Ethiopia included scabies management within the responsibility of health extension workers. In Kamba (the intervention district) workers were trained on scabies management. Whereas, in Arba Minch Zuria (the control district) there was no such training. This study assesses whether decentralization of scabies management to communities would reduce the load on health facilities and allow earlier scabies treatment access. METHODOLOGY: All individuals presenting with scabies before (January - June 2018) and after (August 2018-January 2019) the introduction of training (July

Behavioral Health Problems Presented to Integrated Pediatric Behavioral Health Clinics: Differences in Urban and Rural Patients.

Behavioral health diagnoses and service use may differ based on rurality. The purpose of this study was to examine the patterns of mental disorder diagnoses of urban, rural, and remote pediatric populations. This retrospective study used electronic medical records from integrated behavioral health clinics in Nebraska from 2012 to 2013. Bivariate and multivariable models were used to examine the differences in diagnoses. Adolescents with attention deficit and related disorders were more likely to be male, younger, have public insurance and rural/remote residents. Adjustment disorders were assoc

Comparison of Video-Based Primary Care by Rurality for Chronic Health Conditions at the Veterans Health Administration.

Chronic conditions present significant concerns in rural areas due to limited access to care, despite the need for frequent follow-up visits for their management. The video-based care has the potential to improve access to care. In this study, we identified chronic conditions that were frequently managed by video visits at the Veterans Health Administration (VHA) and examined the use of video modality by rurality. It was a nationwide retrospective study of primary care visits in 2023 using the VHA electronic health records. The outcome was the use of video modality for a primary care visit. Mu

Base-line village health profiles in the E.Y.N rural health programme area of north-east Nigeria.

In order to document the health profile of rural farming communities not yet reached by the EYN Rural Health Programme, based at Garkida, Nigeria, four villages were surveyed by a Sheffield medical student who lived for several weeks in each village, working alongside local women. Villagers helped in separate surveys of village environment and water sources, of compound (household) hygiene, of male heads of compounds, of women of childbearing age, and of children. Stagnant rain-water ponds and widespread animal faeces litter were the main village environmental hazards and hardly any satisfacto…

Rural health inequalities in perceived HIV vulnerability and nutritional status: a cross-comparison of rural communities in West and Southern Africa.

Persistent rural health inequities across Sub-Saharan Africa, particularly regarding HIV burden and nutritional deficiencies, remain a major public health concern, yet evidence indicates that rural disadvantage is neither uniform nor neutral. Anchored in the social determinants of health framework, this study compared household income, healthcare access, and housing quality/sanitation between rural populations in West and Southern Africa; examined cross-national differences in perceived HIV burden and nutritional deficiency; and assessed how these determinants relate to both outcomes. We analy…

Chronic diseases now a leading cause of death in rural India--mortality data from the Andhra Pradesh Rural Health Initiative.

INTRODUCTION: India is undergoing rapid epidemiological transition as a consequence of economic and social change. The pattern of mortality is a key indicator of the consequent health effects but up-to-date, precise, and reliable statistics are few, particularly in rural areas. METHODS: Deaths occurring in 45 villages (population 180 162) were documented during a 12-month period in 2003-04 by multipurpose primary healthcare workers trained in the use of a verbal autopsy tool. Algorithms were used to define causes of death according to a limited list derived from the international classificati

Expect delays: poor connections between rural and urban health systems challenge multidisciplinary care for rural Americans with diabetic foot ulcers.

BACKGROUND: Rural Americans with diabetic foot ulcers (DFUs) face a 50% increased risk of major amputation compared to their urban counterparts. We sought to identify health system barriers contributing to this disparity. METHODS: We interviewed 44 participants involved in the care of rural patients with DFUs: 6 rural primary care providers (PCPs), 12 rural specialists, 12 urban specialists, 9 support staff, and 5 patients/caregivers. Directed content analysis was performed guided by a conceptual model describing how PCPs and specialists collaborate to care for shared patients. RESULTS: Rura

Assessing eye health knowledge and practices amongst primary health care nurses in a rural district, South Africa  .

BACKGROUND: The burden of visual impairment and avoidable blindness has been attributed to the shortage and poor distribution of adequately trained eye care personnel. In the district health system, primary health care (PHC) nurses are the first point of contact for eye care patients. To provide adequate eye care, the nurses in PHC clinics apply their knowledge on basic eye health to ensure best practices and management for patients that present at their clinics. Anecdotal evidence regarding the knowledge and practices of these PHC professionals is scarce. The purpose of this study was to eval
