Objective: Familial Mediterranean fever (FMF) is an autosomal recessive disease characterized by recurrent, self-limited attacks of fever with serositis. Acute recurrent arthritis is the most common form of musculoskeletal involvement in FMF; however, ≤5% of FMF patients can develop chronic arthritis, including sacroiliitis. It is difficult to determine if sacroiliitis is a musculoskeletal finding of FMF or if they are concomitant diseases-FMF and juvenile spondyloarthropathy (JSpA). The present study aimed to compare clinical and laboratory findings in FMF patients with concomitant sacroiliit…

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Acute appendicitis is the most common abdominal surgical emergency in the world and often requires surgical intervention. One of the complications of appendicitis is abscess formation. In rare cases, a localised abscess can occur in the adjacent organs, such as the iliac and psoas muscles. Sacroiliitis occurring secondary to, or concomitant with, acute appendicitis is extremely rare. However, a missed diagnosis of either or both conditions can lead to serious complications, including mortality.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 27-year-old male patient presented to the emergen…

Sacroiliitis is the inflammation of the sacroiliac joint, the largest axial joint in the human body, contributing to 25% of lower back pain cases. It can be detected using various imaging techniques like radiography, MRI, and CT scans. Treatments range from conservative methods to invasive procedures. Recent advancements in artificial intelligence offer precise detection of this condition through imaging. Treatment options range from physical therapy and medications to invasive methods like joint injections and surgery. Future management looks promising with advanced imaging, regenerative medi…

In real clinical practice, back pain in young patients is associated with neurological manifestations of degenerative changes in the lumbosacral spine. However, such complaints may be a manifestation of a lesion of the sacroiliac joint-sacroiliitis, and degenerative changes in the spine may accompany it, but not cause pain. Sacroiliitis is an inflammatory lesion of the sacroiliac joint, which can develop as an independent disease or as a symptom of another nosology. The causes of this pathology are diverse: injuries, long-term overloading of the joint, congenital abnormalities of the joints, i…

The association between sacroiliitis and tubulointerstitial nephritis has not been reported. A 28-year-old man with a history of clinically diagnosed ulcerative colitis (4 years earlier) and sacroiliitis (6 months earlier) developed renal dysfunction 9 months ago, which progressed thereafter. We diagnosed him with tubulointerstitial nephritis by a renal biopsy, for which we started steroid therapy. Subsequently, his renal dysfunction, sacroiliitis, and enteritis partially improved. A pathological analysis of the kidney and intestine revealed lymphocyte infiltration and non-caseating granuloma …

Gaucher disease (GD) is an inherited enzymatic defect resulting from a deficiency of acid [3-glucosidase, a lysosomal enzyme involved in the degradation of cell metabolic products. The major clinical manifestations of GD are hepatosplenomegaly, cytopenia, and bony involvement varying from asymptomatic osteopenia to severest osteoporosis and ischemic necrosis to develop irreversible orthopedic defects. Timely enzyme replacement therapy with recombinant glucosidase makes it possible to arrest disease progression and to prevent damage to the vital organs. However, GD in adult patients is frequent

OBJECTIVE: To study the clinical features of sacroiliitis and differential diagnosis.
METHODS: Totally 509 patients with chief complaints of back pain and diagnosed as sacroiliitis from January 2007 to January in Chinese PLA General Hospital were enrolled. The clinical manifestations, laboratory examinations, imaging and pathological data of the 509 patients were retrospectively analyzed.
RESULTS: There were totally 406 male patients and 103 female patients. Among all 509 patients, 436 were diagnosed as ankylosing spondylitis (AS)/ spondyloarthropathy (SpA) , including 385 men. Thirty-six ca…

Pyogenic sacroiliitis is an uncommon infection often diagnosed late because of poor localization of symptoms and inadequate physical examination. We describe a 12-year-old girl whose osteomyelitis and pyogenic sacroiliitis was initially misdiagnosed and discuss examination, investigation and management of the condition. This case highlights the importance of thorough physical examination and the consideration of septic arthritis in an unusual joint.

A 2.5 years old girl was admitted because of high fever and limping that appeared two days after she had trauma to her right leg. Bone scan demonstrated increased uptake in the right sacroiliac joint, and CT demonstrated right sacroiliitis. Salmonella vircow was isolated from the blood culture. The patient recovered after a five weeks course of intravenous antibiotics. Salmonella sacroiliitis in children is rare, and only seven cases have been reported in the English literature in the last 40 years. We reviewed the literature dealing with pathophysiology diagnosis therapy and outcome of this i…

Septic sacroiliitis is an uncommon disease and is rarely reported as a complication of acupuncture. We present a case of unilateral septic sarcoiliitis, which developed as a complication of acupuncture because of failure to sterilise the skin properly before treatment. Bone scan and computed tomography were positive for sacroiliitis. After a course of antibiotics with oxacillin for 6 weeks, the condition was completely improved. This case report stresses the importance of sterilisation procedures before acupuncture therapy.
