UNLABELLED: Whipple's disease is a rare, chronic systemic infection caused by Tropheryma whipplei that commonly presents with gastrointestinal manifestations but may involve multiple extraintestinal organs. Cardiac involvement, particularly culture-negative endocarditis, is described; however, pulmonary complications such as pulmonary hypertension (PH) are uncommon. We report a case of Whipple's disease presenting with severe pre-capillary pulmonary hypertension and right ventricular (RV) failure with reversibility following antimicrobial therapy. A 62-year-old woman with seropositive rheumato

One of the most vulnerable groups during the COVID-19 pandemic was the older people. This is due not only to the danger of the disease itself and its consequences, but also to the conditions of quarantine restrictions. Based on the materials of 26 interviews with representatives of the older people (from 63 to 87 years old), we analyzed how older people experienced the pandemic in St. Petersburg. The interviews were collected from July to September 2020 by senior volunteers (60+) of the non-commercial organization «House of Projects» (St. Petersburg). The most difficult informants endured spat

INTRODUCTION: DXA have greatly contributed to the development of paleoradiology, a branch of diagnostic imaging that allows to obtain information about human remains in contexts of archaeological and/or forensic interest. In this manuscript we report the unique experience of DXA performed on the relic of a Saint; in particular we analyzed a skeletal fragment of St. Nicholas, kept in the Basilica of Bari (Italy) since 1087.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The bone to be examined consisted of the posterior arch of the ninth left rib that was 12cm long, 1.2cm maximum width and 1.7cm thick at the body. Th

Although estuaries are critical habitats for many aquatic species, the spatial trends of toxic methylmercury (MeHg) in biota from fresh to marine waters are poorly understood. Our objective was to determine if MeHg concentrations in biota changed along a salinity gradient in an estuary. Fourspine Stickleback (Apeltes quadracus), invertebrates (snails, amphipods, and chironomids), sediments, and water were collected from ten sites along the Saint John River estuary, New Brunswick, Canada in 2015 and 2016, with salinities ranging from 0.06 to 6.96. Total mercury (proxy for MeHg) was measured in

BACKGROUND: During the period from 1996 to 2016, we have performed 281 thymectomies in patients with various diseases of the thymus. In 179 patients, thymic pathology was associated with autoimmune myasthenia gravis (MG), and, in 108 patients, thymoma was diagnosed.
METHODS: The majority of surgeries [254] were performed using video thoracoscopy, 79 of them with an additional cervical approach. The long-term results of video thoracoscopic thymectomies in myasthenic patients were followed up for 1 to 15.5 years.
RESULTS: In 26% of the patients, a complete and stable remission was achieved, in

Schistosomiasis is a parasitic, water-related disease that is prevalent in tropical and subtropical areas of the world, causing severe and chronic consequences especially among children. Here we study the spatial spread of this disease within a network of connected villages in the endemic region of the Lower Basin of the Senegal River, in Senegal. The analysis is performed by means of a spatially explicit metapopulation model that couples local-scale eco-epidemiological dynamics with spatial mechanisms related to human mobility (estimated from anonymized mobile phone records), snail dispersal

Introduction. Leptospirosis is a zoonotic bacterial disease of global distribution affecting humans and animals. The initial phase of leptospirosis resembles many other febrile illness and due to its broad and biphasic clinical manifestations, selection and implementation of appropriate diagnostic tests can be challenging. Case presentation. This report describes a case investigation of a 14 weeks old male, orphan puppy, presented with generalised jaundice, anemia, weakness, and anorexia. Clinical abnormalities included the evidence of renal and hepatic failure. Antemortem and postmortem diagn

We prospectively observed 36 haematological patients with mucormycosis from nine hospitals of St. Petersburg during 2004-2013. The most frequent underlying diseases were acute leukaemia (64%), and main risk factors were prolonged neutropenia (92%) and lymphocytopenia (86%). In 50% of the patients, mucormycosis was diagnosed 1-65 days after invasive aspergillosis. Main clinical form of mucormycosis was pulmonary (64%), while two or more organ involvement was noted in 50% of the cases. The most frequent aetiological agents of mucormycosis were Rhizopus spp. (48%). Twelve-week survival rate was 5

Saint Louis encephalitis virus (SLE) is a mosquito borne disease. Only a small proportion of cases progress to severe clinical forms. There have been few reports on HIV-infected patients and the relationship between immunodeficiency and the course of the disease remains unclear. Herein we describe two cases of SLE in HIV-1-infected patients in Buenos Aires city.

We report the case of a male, 80-year-old resident in the City of Buenos Aires, with a diagnosis of St. Louis encephalitis (SLE) during a countrywide dengue outbreak, from January to May 2009. The patient had a chronic lymphocytic leukemia treated with chlorambucil, prostate cancer (hormone therapy and radiotherapy) and images consistent with bone metastases. Cerebrospinal fluid examination showed pleocytosis with a predominance of mononuclear cells and high protein concentration. Bacteria, fungi and mycobacteria cultures, as well as the PCR for herpes virus, HSV, CMV and EBV, were negative. W

Jamestown Canyon (JC) and Saint Louis encephalitis (SLE) viruses are mosquito-transmitted viruses that have long been present in California. The objective of this study was to determine the seroprevalence of these two viruses in horses prior to the introduction of West Nile (WN) virus. Approximately 15% of serum samples collected in 1998 from 425 horses on 44 equine operations horses throughout California had serum antibodies to JC virus, whereas antibodies were not detected to SLE virus. The results indicate that horses in California were commonly infected prior to 1998 with mosquito-transmit

OBJECTIVES: Our purpose was to evaluate perinatal mortality in twins and to investigate factors associated with this mortality.
STUDY DESIGN: A prospective study on the perinatal mortality was performed in the department of Seine-Saint-Denis. Out of all the perinatal deaths, we have retrospectively isolated those arising from twin pregnancies.
RESULTS: There were 54 twin pregnancies complicated with perinatal death. The perinatal mortality rate in twin pregnancy was 78.0 per 1000 twin babies delivered. Out of 86 twin deaths, 38 (44.2%) were born before 28 weeks gestation and out of 82 twin p

The mechanism for long-term maintenance of St. Louis encephalitis (SLE) virus in California is unknown. Two possibilities are 1) that the virus is maintained locally in discrete enzootic foci by one or more reservoir mechanisms, and/or 2) that the foci are ephemeral in nature and virus is reintroduced periodically from other enzootic areas by migratory birds or movement of vectors. We have investigated these epidemiologic alternatives by studies of genetic variation within a 277 nucleotide portion of the envelope-encoding region among 17 strains of SLE virus isolated since 1952 from different

The author discusses two minor, but nevertheless very unpleasant, complications which can occur following haemorrhoidectomy according to the St Mark's Hospital London technique. The first consists of a healing defect in one of the two or three incisions with local reorganization and inadequate granulation tissue, which results in the classical picture of anal fissures(s) several weeks after the operation. The reasons for this are quite complicated, but in general there is a persistence of local inflammation which should have resolved after the phase of simple wound toilet. The treatment is tha

Twenty-one hybridomas producing monoclonal antibodies specific for the E glycoprotein of St. Louis encephalitis (SLE) virus, strain MSI-7, have been isolated. Serologic reactivities were initially determined by cross-reactivity indirect immunofluorescence assays using 22 strains of SLE virus and 8 other related flaviviruses. Four groups demonstrating type-, subcomplex-, supercomplex-, and group-specific reactivity patterns were identified. Analysis of hemagglutination-inhibition (HI) and virus neutralization (N) subdivided the cross-reactivity groups into eight epitopes (E-1a,b,c,d, E-2, E-3,

We describe here a novel peeling skin condition (PSC) in 2 neonatal Pacific walruses (Odobenus rosmarus subsp. divergens). Macroscopically, calves had various degrees of peeling skin exacerbated by mechanical trauma. Lesions occurred in areas subject to friction: ventrum, fore- and hindflippers, and associated joints. Histopathologic features included pseudocarcinomatous epithelial hyperplasia with orthokeratotic hyperkeratosis. Bacterial cocci were present within the stratum corneum. A few intraepidermal clefts were present. Inflammation, epidermolysis, and vasculopathies were not observed. P
