[Emergency care as a high-risk workplace-Measures to deal with violence against employees].

BACKGROUND: Many employees in the field of emergency care experience verbal and physical violence caused by patients or visitors. The aim of this project is to gain insights into which measures are available to deal with violence in emergency care and how employees subjectively evaluate them. METHODS: A nationwide cross-sectional online survey was conducted in 2020. The questionnaire contained items on violence prevention, intervention, and follow-up measures. Quantitative data were analysed descriptively and free text data according to Mayring's qualitative content analysis. RESULTS: A tota

Hospital Security Team Involvement in Emergency Mental Health Care of Patients.

IMPORTANCE: Hospital-based security teams assist emergency department (ED) staff when there is a risk to staff or patient safety. OBJECTIVE: To describe the current practice of hospital security assistance during emergency mental health care. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This qualitative study with mixed methods was a secondary analysis of a retrospective cohort study of patients in the ED for mental health concerns who received involuntary sedation from 2020 to 2021. Any ED note documenting security presence or calls was abstracted as a text snippet. Hospital security data logs were a

Disorganized infant attachment classification and maternal psychosocial problems as predictors of hostile-aggressive behavior in the preschool classroom.

This study of 62 low-income families examined the relation between maternal and infant measures assessed at 18 months infant age and child behavior problems at age 5 as rated by preschool teachers. The infancy assessments included measures of mother-infant interaction, maternal psychosocial problems, infant cognitive development, and infant attachment security, including the disorganized/disoriented classification. The strongest single predictor of deviant levels of hostile behavior toward peers in the classroom was earlier disorganized/disoriented attachment status, with 71% of hostile presch

Mortuary operations following mass fatality natural disasters: a review.

This is a critical review to discuss the best practice approaches to mortuary operations in preparation for and the response to natural, mass fatality, disaster events, as identified by a review of published articles. The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis Protocols (PRISMA-P) Statement guided the identification of potential articles to use in this critical review. Subsequent searches were also conducted to identify articles relating to heat wave, and flood mortality. All identified peer-reviewed studies published in English which discussed the preparation and r

The importance of establishing a national health security preparedness index.

Natural disasters, infectious disease epidemics, terrorism, and major events like the nuclear incident at Fukushima all pose major potential challenges to public health and security. Events such as the anthrax letters of 2001, Hurricanes Katrina, Irene, and Sandy, severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) and West Nile virus outbreaks, and the 2009 H1N1 influenza pandemic have demonstrated that public health, emergency management, and national security efforts are interconnected. These and other events have increased the national resolve and the resources committed to improving the national hea

Using Twitter and other social media platforms to provide situational awareness during an incident.

The recent use of social media by protesters in Iran, Egypt, Yemen and elsewhere has focused new attention on this communications medium. Government agencies and businesses, as well, are using social media to push information to their stakeholders. Those who are on the front lines of this information revolution, however, realise that social media is most effective when the communication is two-way. Unlike other media, social media allows information sharing. This, in turn, provides emergency managers with new situational-awareness resources when trying to mitigate an incident. As Federal Emerg

Radiation alarm at an airport after radioiodine therapy.

BACKGROUND: Screening for radioactive material at borders may become more widely introduced in order to prevent illegal transport. All the alarms at Vienna airport so far have been due to recent applications of radionuclides for medical reasons. METHODS: We report a patient who unexpectedly experienced this problem after undergoing radioiodine therapy. RESULTS: We propose to inform patients routinely about this issue and to provide them with a certificate containing details of the administered radionuclide. CONCLUSION: This could reduce problems for authorities, patients and institutions. T

[Violence in the emergency department].

There is an international epidemic of violence in the emergency department (ED) which threatens medical staff daily. The problem is underestimated in Israel and there are as yet no regulations of the Ministry of Health and the Bureau of Security and Safety that deal with the problem. At the beginning of 1997 we conducted a retrospective survey to estimate the extent of this problem and to define its causes and the various options for management. An anonymous questionnaire was given to all permanent workers of our ED: physicians, nurses and reception clerks, as well as physicians who worked in

Special report: controlling aggression in hospitals--what security officers must know to avoid physical attacks.

Threats to the safety of security officers by persons they encounter in confrontational or potentially confrontational situations are an ever-present danger. This potential for physical violence can take place in the lobby, cafeteria, halls, elevators, or the parking lot of any corporate entity, not just hospitals. In hospitals, however, this danger is compounded by psychiatric patients and other hospital patients under stress. Hospital security personnel are often called to defuse potentially violent patient situations. Further compounding this risk of violence are increases in cutbacks in ho

Patients with allergic disease and anti-social behavior: their potential risks to themselves, health care personnel, and other patients.

A series of 7 allergic patients seen by one Allergy Service in a two-year period were identified as being allegedly involved in anti-social activities. They were either seriously ill or mimicked serious illness and by their behavior constituted a potential risk to themselves, other patients or health care personnel. Early identification of such high risk patients protects both patients and health care personnel.

Is emergency management an integrated element of business continuity management? A case study with security professionals in Western Australia.

Emergency management (EM) and business continuity management (BCM) frameworks incorporate various strategic and operational measures. Defined within a number of national and international standards and guidelines, such concepts may be integrated within one another to provide increased resilience to disruptive events. Nevertheless, there is a degree of dispute regarding concept integration among security and EM professionals and bodies of knowledge. In line with cognitive psychology exemplar-based concepts, such disputes may be associated with a lack of precision in communality in the approach

Controlling the exotic diseases: 1. Isolation facilities.

The exotic diseases are highly virulent transmissible conditions that include Lassa fever, some viral hemorrhagic fevers, smallpox and plague. Any of these diseases could be brought into or diagnosed in Canada as the result of natural or laboratory acquired infection. The patients must be isolated until the presumptive diagnosis is proved. High-security isolation is necessary and needs to be backed up by high-security laboratory services. In Canada facilities for high-security isolation are generally not available; therefore, hospitals must preplan and be ready to effect the best possible isol

Snapshots of food security status in Western Sydney post-COVID-19 lockdown: a cross-sectional study.

OBJECTIVES: The COVID-19 lockdown had significant effects on daily life, particularly food security among Australian adults. This study examined the longer-term impact of lockdown measures on food security in Western Sydney, a region more socio-economically challenged within the Sydney area. METHODS: A total of 548 adults were recruited via convenience sampling at least 6 months post-lockdown (May-August 2022 and January-February 2023). Of these, 523 completed the validated six-item USDA Household Food Security Survey Module and were included in the quantitative analysis. Fifty-four participa

Household Food and Nutrition Security Among Publicly Insured Families of Hospitalized Children.

OBJECTIVE: To characterize household food and nutrition security among families during hospitalization and examine associations with government benefits and neighborhood conditions. We hypothesized Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) or Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) receipt or residence in higher Child Opportunity Index (COI) neighborhoods would be associated with higher food and nutrition security status. METHODS: We conducted a single-site cross-sectional study (October 2024-June 2025) of publicly insured families of a hospitalize

Household Food Security and Infant Adiposity.

OBJECTIVES: Food insecurity has been associated with obesity, but previous studies are inconsistent and few included infants. We examined associations between household food security and infant adiposity and assessed the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) and Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) as effect modifiers. We hypothesized that infants from food-insecure households would have greater adiposity, with attenuation by WIC and SNAP. METHODS: We repeatedly measured 666 infants from the southeastern United States in 2013-2017. We catego

Clinical risk management in High-Security Forensic Psychiatry Residences. Protecting patients and health professionals: perspectives and critical issues of the Law 81/2014.

The Italian Law n. 9/2012 provided the Italian Regions with a new decisional role by demanding the management/rehabilitation of prisoners judged as partially/fully mentally ill to care and protection delivered by the psychiatric services of the Regional Health Service. Healthcare has to be guaranteed by the so-called High-Security Forensic Psychiatry Residences (Italian: Residenze per l'Esecuzione delle Misure di Sicurezza: REMS) and by community mental health centres. Ensuring patients' and professionals' health and safety is a complex issue which requires effective strategies to cope with se

Effect of total shoulder replacements on airport security screening in the post-9/11 era.

There are few reports in the literature on the effect of orthopaedic implants on airport security devices and none on shoulder arthroplasty implants after September 11, 2001. Since 9/11, airport security screening devices have become more sensitive in response to the increasing threat of terrorism. Often, patients with joint implants activate the metal detectors and are subsequently subjected to more intensive screening. We assess the effects of shoulder joint implants on different airport security devices and what effect the results had on passenger travel. In this study, 154 patients who had
