15-LOX-catalytic bias towards ether-(alkenyl)-ETE-PEs oxidation bestows selectivity of PRO-ferroptotic cell death signaling.

Ether (alkyl/alkenyl) phospholipids, particularly phosphatidylethanolamine (PE) and phosphatidylcholine (PC), are broadly represented in membranes, but their physiological functions are poorly characterized. The antioxidant role of plasmalogens realized via oxidation of sn-1 vinyl bond has been associated with anti-ferroptotic regulatory function. Alternatively, peroxidation of polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) in sn-2-position of alkenyl-PEs can be pro-ferroptotic. Since 15-LOXs generate 15-HpETE-PEs as ferroptotic signals, we explored alkyl/alkenyl-ETE-PE as substrates of enzymatic peroxidat

Fairness of a Professionalism-Oriented Situational Judgment Test for Residency Selection in the United States: A Predictive Bias Analysis by Gender, URiM Status, and International Medical Graduate Status.

Phenomenon: Residency selection has traditionally emphasized cognitive measures such as Unites States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) Step 1, Step 2 Clinical Knowledge (CK), and clerkship grades, even though physician performance encompasses cognitive and noncognitive competencies. Situational judgment tests (SJTs) have emerged as a promising complement, demonstrating criterion-related validity and producing smaller subgroup score differences than cognitive measures. However, smaller mean differences do not establish fairness. The Standards for Educational and Psychological Testing disti

Editorial Commentary: Outcomes of Shoulder Biceps Tenotomy Versus Tenodesis Are Difficult to Determine From Nonrandomized Studies Due to Selection Bias: Tenodesis Is More Commonly Performed on Younger Males.

The long head of the biceps tendon is a common source of anterior shoulder pain, frequently addressed during rotator cuff repairs. Surgical … nodesis for younger, male patients. Thus, nonrandomized studies introduce confounding variables and selection bias that can obscure clear recommendations based on the literature.

Influence of Selection Bias in Survey Studies Derived From a Patient-Focused Organization: A Comparison of Response Data From a Single Tertiary Care Center and the Acoustic Neuroma Association.

BACKGROUND: The Acoustic Neuroma Association (ANA) is a national, nonprofit organization, focused on the education and support of patients with vestibular schwannoma (VS). The aim of the present study is to characterize the profile of ANA survey respondents and compare them with non-ANA patients evaluated at a single tertiary academic referral center to investigate the potential influence of selection bias. METHODS: A prospectively maintained VS quality-of-life (QOL) database, comprised of patients evaluated at the authors' center and members of the ANA, was queried. Demographic variables, pa…

Attention Bias Modification Treatment Versus a Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitor Or Waiting List Control for Social Anxiety Disorder: A Randomized Clinical Trial.

OBJECTIVE: Social anxiety disorder is common and impairing. The efficacy of pharmacotherapy is moderate, highlighting the need for alternative therapies. This study compared the efficacy of gaze-contingent music reward therapy (GC-MRT), an eye-tracking-based attention bias modification treatment, with a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) treatment or a waiting list control condition in reducing social anxiety disorder symptoms. Superior clinical effects of similar magnitude were expected for the active treatments relative to the control condition. METHODS: Participants were 105 tre

Growth differences and competition between Listeria monocytogenes strains determine their predominance on ham slices and lead to bias during selective enrichment with the ISO protocol.

Listeria monocytogenes strains are widespread in the environment where they live well mixed, often resulting in multiple strains contaminating a single food sample. The occurrence of different strains in the same food might trigger strain competition, contributing to uneven growth of strains in food and to bias during selective procedures. We tested the growth of seven L. monocytogenes strains (C5, 6179, ScottA, PL24, PL25, PL26, PL27) on ham slices and on nutrient-rich agar at 10°C, singly and in combinations. Strains were made resistant to different antibiotics for their selective enumeratio

Selection bias and inferential validity in fever of unknown origin studies. Comment on: Poposki et al. Visceral leishmaniasis as a leading cause of fever of unknown origin in immunocompetent adults.

The article by Poposki et al. on visceral leishmaniasis as a cause of fever of unknown origin presents clinically valuable observations but exhibits substantial methodological limitations. Differential exclusion of undiagnosed cases introduces selection bias and precludes generalizable prevalence estimates. The analytical strategy lacks etiological coherence by comparing a specific diagnosis against heterogeneous conditions. Multiple univariate comparisons without adjustment for family-wise error rate and absence of multivariable analysis to control confounding limit causal inference. The cros…

Do trauma cue exposure and/or PTSD symptom severity intensify selective approach bias toward cannabis cues in regular cannabis users with trauma histories?

Trauma cue-elicited activation of automatic cannabis-related cognitive biases are theorized to contribute to comorbid posttraumatic stress disorder and cannabis use disorder. This phenomenon can be studied experimentally by combining the trauma cue reactivity paradigm (CRP) with cannabis-related cognitive processing tasks. In this study, we used a computerized cannabis approach-avoidance task (AAT) to assess automatic cannabis (vs. neutral) approach bias following personalized trauma (vs. neutral) CRP exposure. We hypothesized that selective cannabis (vs. neutral) approach biases on the AAT wo

A novel use of the Spine Tango registry to evaluate selection bias in patient recruitment into clinical studies: an analysis of patients participating in the Lumbar Spinal Stenosis Outcome Study (LSOS).

PURPOSE: Patients enrolled in clinical studies typically represent a sub-set of all who are eligible, and selection bias may compromise the generalizability of the findings. Using Registry data, we evaluated whether surgical patients recruited by one of the referring centres into the Lumbar Spinal Stenosis Outcome Study (LSOS; a large-scale, multicentre prospective observational study to determine the probability of clinical benefit after surgery) differed in any significant way from those who were eligible but not enrolled. METHODS: Data were extracted for all patients with lumbar spinal ste…

[Influence of the general data protection regulation on data quality in registry data collection : Selection bias due to data protection requirements and the impact on key indicators for measuring the quality of care in a level 1 trauma center].

BACKGROUND: Due to the new general data protection regulations (GDPR), the requirements for correct patient information on the documentation of pseudonymized data in a registry have increased enormously. In particular, written consent applies to the TraumaRegister DGU® as it is not always possible to get written permission from severely injured patients in acute situations. Therefore, the study aimed to investigate the influence of undocumented cases due to a lack of clarification on the standardized mortality rate (SMR). MATERIAL AND METHODS: In 2019, 274 patients meeting the criteria of the

Reducing bias in parameter estimates from stepwise regression in proportional hazards regression with right-censored data.

When variable selection with stepwise regression and model fitting are conducted on the same data set, competition for inclusion in the model induces a selection bias in coefficient estimators away from zero. In proportional hazards regression with right-censored data, selection bias inflates the absolute value of parameter estimate of selected parameters, while the omission of other variables may shrink coefficients toward zero. This paper explores the extent of the bias in parameter estimates from stepwise proportional hazards regression and proposes a bootstrap method, similar to those prop…

Time of day bias for biological sampling in studies of mammary cancer.

Despite its demonstrated biological significance, time of day is a broadly overlooked biological variable in preclinical and clinical studies. How time of day affects the influence of peripheral tumors on central (brain) function remains unspecified. Thus, we tested the hypothesis that peripheral mammary cancer tumors alter the transcriptome of immune responses in the brain and that these responses vary based on time of day; we predicted that time of day sampling bias would alter the interpretation of the results. Brain tissues collected at mid dark and mid light from mammary tumor-bearing and

Reducing misclassification bias in severe malaria research.

By incorporating platelets and PfHRP2 into standard case definitions of severe falciparum malaria, Watson et al.1 increased diagnostic specificity to 93%. The approach trades off sensitivity and might introduce a selection bias but offers a helpful way to handle misclassification.

Retrospective Cohort Studies in Craniofacial Outcomes Research: An Epidemiologist's Approach to Mitigating Bias.

Retrospective cohort studies, defined as a follow-up study in which outcome occurred prior to study onset, are common in craniofacial outcomes research and will continue to be prevalent given the increasing availability of secondary datasets and inherent prospective study limitations. However, if available data are not adequately measured, or necessary variables are absent, retrospective cohort studies can be particularly prone to bias. This brief communication aims to highlight the primary sources of bias, including measurement error, selection bias, and confounding. Each source is clearly de…
