How does it feel to lack a sense of boundaries? A case study of a long-term mindfulness meditator.

This paper discusses the phenomenological nature of the sense of boundaries (SB), based on the case of S, who has practiced mindfulness in the Satipathana and Theravada Vipassana traditions for about 40years and accumulated around 20,000h of meditative practice. S's unique abilities enable him to describe his inner lived experience with great precision and clarity. S was asked to shift between three different stages: (a) the default state, (b) the dissolving of the SB, and (c) the disappearance of the SB. Based on his descriptions, we identified seven categories (with some overlap) that alter

"What I couldn't do before, I can do now": Narrations of agentic shifts and psychological growth by young adults reporting discontinuation of self-injury since adolescence.

PURPOSE: We explore young adults' narrations of life events in association with nonsuicidal self-injury (NSSI) discontinuation, psychological growth, and agency. METHODS: Transcripts from eleven face-to-face interviews with individuals who quantitatively reported injuring themselves in adolescence (2007-2008) but not in young adulthood (2017) were narratively analysed. RESULTS: We found that at starting points, a period preceding an agentic shift in the narrative, participants endured stressful living conditions and mental illness. During this period, participants perceived no point in tryin

Impaired self-agency in functional movement disorders: A resting-state fMRI study.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the neural mechanisms underlying impaired self-agency in patients with functional movement disorders using resting-state functional MRI (fMRI). METHODS: We obtained resting-state fMRI on 35 patients with clinically definite functional movement disorders and 35 age- and sex-matched healthy controls. Between-group differences in functional connectivity from the right temporo-parietal junction (TPJ), a region previously demonstrated to play a critical role in self-agency by comparing internal predictions of movement with actual external events, were assessed using t tes

"Tethered to this ball and chain": Women's perspectives on bodily agency within opioid treatment programs.

BACKGROUND: Methadone Maintenance Treatment (MMT) reduces the risks associated with opioid use disorder (OUD), including overdose mortality and HIV/HCV transmission, and promotes patient well-being. Nonetheless, MMT is highly underutilized in the United States, with less than 10 % of those with OUD receiving MMT. This study examines how women's feelings of bodily agency while receiving MMT through Opioid Treatment Programs (OTPs) can impact treatment retention. METHODS: In-depth interviews were conducted with 20 women in Pennsylvania with a lifetime history of criminal legal involvement and u

The development of narrative identity in the psychodynamic treatment of avoidant personality disorder: A case study.

Avoidant personality disorder (AvPD) is characterized by feelings of shyness, inadequacy, and restraint in intimate relationships and has been associated with a disturbance in narrative identity, which is the internalized and evolving story of past, present, and future experiences. Study findings have indicated that an improvement in overall mental health through psychotherapy may increase narrative identity. However, there is a lack of studies incorporating not only the examination of narrative identity development before and after psychotherapy but also within psychotherapy sessions. This ca

Along the fringes of Agency: neurodevelopmental account of the obsessive mind.

The experiential core of the obsessive mind rests on subtle, primary mental phenomena (such as obsessions and so called "sensory phenomena") which precede and trigger behavioral compulsions. Converging evidence supports a possible pathophysiological role for altered corollary discharge (phenotypically expressed in sensorimotor symptoms and contributing to a reduced Sense of Agency [SoA]), in the neurodevelopment of obsessions and "sensory phenomena." In phenomenological terms, "sensory phenomena" may represent the subjective experiential resonance of an individual history of persistent inaccur…

Perspective and agency during video gaming influences spatial presence experience and brain activation patterns.

BACKGROUND: The experience of spatial presence (SP), i.e., the sense of being present in a virtual environment, emerges if an individual perceives himself as 1) if he were actually located (self-location) and 2) able to act in the virtual environment (possible actions). In this study, two main media factors (perspective and agency) were investigated while participants played a commercially available video game. METHODS: The differences in SP experience and associated brain activation were compared between the conditions of game play in first person perspective (1PP) and third person perspecti

The Meaning of Agency in Contexts of Everyday Life for Mental Health Recovery in Young Adulthood - A Thematic Analysis.

OBJECTIVES: For young adults, experiences of life-disruptive mental distress often involve social isolation, stigma and reduced self-worth, which can impede recovery during a critical period of identity formation. This study explores how six young adults in Denmark, recruited through the OPUS early psychosis intervention program, retrospectively assessed how, where and why they were enabled to act within everyday contexts to catalyse recovery. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: An abductive thematic analysis was conducted using life story interviews followed by intensive interviews focused on youth

Age-related differences in embodying a tool under visual deprivation.

Tool embodiment refers to the integration of external objects into action-related body representations. Although vision is often assumed to support this process, it remains unclear how tool use under short-term visual deprivation affects explicit ownership and agency across the adult lifespan. This study examined whether blindfolded cane use elicits subjective ownership and agency in younger and older adults, and whether these experiences are associated with forearm tactile distance perception and perceived reaching distance. Forty-three healthy right-handed adults completed two blindfolded ca

Searching for agency in animal models of addiction: Choice between choices.

PURPOSE: This study was motivated by Ahmed's (2024) observation that subjects in animal models of addiction lack agency. Animals have been given increasing control over drug-taking in addiction models, but not the opportunity to change their circumstances in ways that favor drug self-administration vs. abstinence. The present study aimed to develop a model wherein rats could intervene to change the choice contingencies available to them. METHODS: Rats were trained to choose between self-administered heroin or sucrose pellets in two choice conditions. In one condition, heroin was cheap and suc

Substance use and the value of control.

Clinical criteria for substance-use disorder collectively specify a loss of instrumental control over consumption; yet little empirical work has addressed how substance use shapes the utility of agency in motivated behavior. We combined a hierarchical gambling task with cross-sectional substance-use surveys and computational cognitive modeling to assess the preference for controllable environments in adult humans with self-reported abstinence from psychostimulants, opioids, alcohol, or sedatives. For psychostimulant use, longer abstinence selectively increased the preference for instrumental c

Cancer as loss of control: The extent of perceived control and its relevance for mental distress in cancer patients - A cross-sectional comparative study.

OBJECTIVE: Cancer is often described as a loss of control. The somatic symptoms and the strict treatment may limit an individual's ability to adapt environmental factors (e.g., career goals, social life) to their own needs (i.e., limited primary control). Facilitating one's individual values and needs to the cancer-related circumstances (i.e., secondary control) thus may be central in maintaining mental health. The current work aims to investigate the roles of primary and secondary controls for mental health in individuals with cancer and compare it to the general population. METHODS: The stu

"The less they talk about it, the more we think about it": a qualitative interview study of the existential agency of children and young people when they are relatives of a family member dying from cancer in a hospice in Denmark.

BACKGROUND: Young relatives often grapple with a range of complex emotions, including fear, loneliness, and isolation, which are compounded by a lack of support and recognition. These experiences are deeply existential in nature, affecting their sense of meaning, identity, and emotional well-being. Despite the significance of these experiences, there remains a lack of scientific knowledge regarding the existential dimensions of the lives of young relatives facing the imminent death of a family member, particularly from the perspective of children and young people, whose voices and experiences

The interrelationship between women's help-seeking experiences for vaginismus and their sense of self: a qualitative study and abductive analysis.

OBJECTIVE: There is a lack of research on women's holistic experiences of vaginismus, also called sexual pain-penetration disorder, from their perspective. To address this gap, an abductive qualitative study aimed to examine women's help-seeking experiences for vaginismus, and its impact on their sense of self. METHODS: This study was informed by a feminist approach to the theory of self focused on participants' negotiation of dis/empowerment when help-seeking for vaginismus. Twenty-one participants aged 19-37 years (mean 27.6 years) and diagnosed with vaginismus in Australia participated in

Moreover, the findings underscore the lack of role of family hope and sense of agency among parents whose children were not at home. Dementia and the Power of Music Therapy.

Dementia is now a leading cause of both mortality and morbidity, particularly in western nations, and current projections for rates of dementia suggest this will worsen. More than ever, cost effective and creative non-pharmacological therapies are needed to ensure we have an adequate system of care and supervision. Music therapy is one such measure, yet to date statements of what music therapy is supposed to bring about in ethical terms have been limited to fairly vague and under-developed claims about an improvement in well-being. This article identifies the relevant sense of wellbeing at sta

Striatal sensitivity to personal responsibility in a regret-based decision-making task.

Regret and relief are complex emotional states associated with the counterfactual processing of nonobtained outcomes in a decision-making situation. In the "actor effect," a sense of agency and personal responsibility is thought to heighten these emotions. Using fMRI, we scanned volunteers (n = 22) as they played a task involving choices between two wheel-of-fortune gambles. We examined how neural responses to counterfactual outcomes were modulated by giving subjects the opportunity to change their minds, as a manipulation of personal responsibility. Satisfaction ratings to the outcomes were h…

"Typhoid Mary" and "HIV Jane": responsibility, agency and disease prevention.

The construction of disease risks as knowable, calculable and preventable in dominant social science and public health discourses has fostered a certain kind of logic about individual risk and the responsibility for infection. Disease control measures that have developed out of this logic typically fail to recognise the socio-structural roots of many high-risk behaviours that are linked to the spread of infection. Instead, they hold the disease carrier responsible for managing his/her own risk of infection of others, and rely on constraining the agency of the carrier (e.g. by constraining move
