Birth Weight, Adult Fat Distribution, and Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus Risk: Sex-Specific Study in a Large Prospective Cohort.

BACKGRUOUND: Regional fat distribution is a key determinant of metabolic risk, independent of total adiposity. However, the developmental origins of fat depot-specific accumulation and its contribution to type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) remain unclear. We aimed to investigate whether adult fat distribution mediates the association between birth weight (BW) and T2DM risk. METHODS: We analyzed 30,718 diabetes-free UK Biobank participants with magnetic resonance imaging/dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry derived measures of visceral adipose tissue (VAT), abdominal subcutaneous adipose tissue, and

Sex- and body surface area-specific distribution and developmental trends of left ventricular structure and function during early adolescence.

UNLABELLED: To characterize sex- and body surface area (BSA)-related distributional patterns and developmental trends of left ventricular (LV) structure and function in healthy early adolescents. This cross-sectional study included 417 healthy children aged 10-13 years, stratified by BSA (0.90-1.20, 1.20-1.50, and 1.50-1.80 m2). LV structural and functional indices were examined using Spearman correlations, kernel density estimation, and generalized additive models (GAMs). GAMs included age and sex as covariates and modeled BSA using sex-specific smooth terms. BSA showed weak positive correlat

Sex-Specific Distribution of Glycine Transporter 2 in the Central Nervous System of Adult GlyT2-iCre-tdTomato Mouse Brain.

Glycine critically regulates locomotor and sensory processing, with its presynaptic glycine transporter 2 (GlyT2) serving as key therapeutic targets for modulating glycinergic neurotransmission. While GlyT2 inhibitors hold clinical promise, the specialization of spatially distributed GlyT2 neuronal populations across the brain remains incomplete. Here, we crossed GlyT2-iCre with Ai9 to generate GlyT2-iCre-tdTomato mice, enabling anatomical mapping and functional interrogation of GlyT2 circuits. Here, we generated GlyT2-iCre-tdTomato mice through crossbreeding GlyT2-iCre and Ai9 lines, enabling

Lizards as Model Organisms of Sex Chromosome Evolution: What We Really Know from a Systematic Distribution of Available Data?

Lizards represent unique model organisms in the study of sex determination and sex chromosome evolution. Among tetrapods, they are characterized by an unparalleled diversity of sex determination systems, including temperature-dependent sex determination (TSD) and genetic sex determination (GSD) under either male or female heterogamety. Sex chromosome systems are also extremely variable in lizards. They include simple (XY and ZW) and multiple (X1X2Y and Z1Z2W) sex chromosome systems and encompass all the different hypothesized stages of diversification of heterogametic chromosomes, from homomor

Differences in age, site distribution, and sex between nodular and superficial basal cell carcinoma indicate different types of tumors.

Basal cell carcinomas (BCC) are among the most common cancers in white subjects. Etiologic factors include ultraviolet and ionizing radiation, chemical carcinogens, and possibly infection with human papillomaviruses. Because of clinical and histologic differences, differential pathogenetic mechanisms have been suggested for different BCC subtypes. We studied the patient and tumor characteristics of all BCC diagnosed and/or treated at the departments of Dermatology and Plastic Surgery of our hospital between 1985 and 1996, and a review of the literature was carried out. Some important differenc

Association of testosterone and sex hormone-binding globulin with fat distribution in men: a quantitative water-fat MRI study.

BACKGROUND: The dynamic interplay between body fat distribution and sex hormone metabolism has been drawing escalating interest, especially in light of the frequently observed fluctuations in these indicators among male obese patients. Furthermore, exploring this connection holds paramount importance for the effective treatment and prevention of male obesity-related diseases. This study examines the relationships between regional fat depots (visceral, subcutaneous, epicardial volumes) and tissue-specific fat content (liver, pancreas, vertebra, muscle) with circulating testosterone and sex horm

Sex-Specific Distributed White Matter Microarchitectural Alterations in Preadolescent Youths With Anxiety Disorders: A Mega-Analytic Study.

OBJECTIVE: Anxiety disorders are among the most common psychiatric disorders in youths and emerge during childhood. This is also a period of rapid white matter (WM) development, which is critical for efficient neuronal communication. Previous work in preadolescent children with anxiety disorders demonstrated anxiety disorder-related reductions in WM microstructural integrity (fractional anisotropy [FA]) in the uncinate fasciculus (UF), the major WM tract facilitating prefrontal cortical-limbic structural connectivity. Importantly, this association was found only in boys with anxiety disorders.

Sex-specific distribution and classification of Wolbachia infections and mitochondrial DNA haplogroups in Aedes albopictus from the Indo-Pacific.

The arbovirus vector Aedes albopictus (Asian tiger mosquito) is common throughout the Indo-Pacific region, where most global dengue transmission occurs. We analysed population genomic data and tested for cryptic species in 160 Ae. albopictus sampled from 16 locations across this region. We found no evidence of cryptic Ae. albopictus but found multiple intraspecific COI haplotypes partitioned into groups representing three Asian lineages: East Asia, Southeast Asia and Indonesia. Papua New Guinea (PNG), Vanuatu and Christmas Island shared recent coancestry, and Indonesia and Timor-Leste were lik

Gardnerella vaginalis Clade Distribution Is Associated With Behavioral Practices and Nugent Score in Women Who Have Sex With Women.

BACKGROUND: Gardnerella vaginalis is detected in women with and without bacterial vaginosis (BV). Identification of 4 G. vaginalis clades raised the possibility that pathogenic and commensal clades exist. We investigated the association of behavioral practices and Nugent Score with G. vaginalis clade distribution in women who have sex with women (WSW). METHODS: Longitudinal self-collected vaginal specimens were analyzed using established G. vaginalis species-specific and clade-typing polymerase chain reaction assays. Logistic regression assessed factors associated with detection of G. vaginal

The distribution of L1 and Alu retroelements in relation to GC content on human sex chromosomes is consistent with the ectopic recombination model.

The distribution of Alu and L1 retroelements in the human genome changes with their age. Active retroelements target AT-rich regions, but their frequency increases in GC- and gene-rich regions of the genome with increasing age of the insertions. Currently there is no consensus on the mechanism generating this pattern. In this paper we test the hypothesis that selection against deleterious deletions caused by ectopic recombination between repeats is the main cause of the inhomogeneous distribution of L1s and Alus, by means of a detailed analysis of the GC distribution of the repeats on the sex

Effect of cortisol on percentage of non-sex-hormone-bound steroid: implications for distribution of steroids on binding proteins in serum.

We previously observed that in men concentrations of serum testosterone (T) not bound to sex-hormone-binding globulin (n-SHBGT) decreased as concentrations of cortisol increased in early morning. This led us to investigate in vitro the influence of several steroids on protein-bound T. Steroids were added to late-evening sera containing low concentrations of cortisol. Changes were measured in percent T or estradiol not bound to SHBG (%n-SHBGT or %n-SHBGE). Results were compared with computer simulations of a mass action model describing current understanding of steroid binding to serum proteins

Tumors of salivary glands. Review of 479 cases with particular reference to histological types, site, age and sex distribution.

479 cases of tumors of salivary glands were examined at the Institute of Surgical Pathology of the University of Padua during the years 1973-1986; all these were reviewed. The diagnosis of individual tumors was based on the World Health Organization classification. Tumors were analyzed considering the histological type, sex, age and site. Primary tumors of epithelial origin were 91.8%. The principal site was the parotid (78.1%) while the submandibular gland forms the second largest group (14.57%). The malignant forms increase with age and were more common in submandibular and sublingual glands

Overfeeding-induced weight gain elicits decreases in sex hormone-binding globulin in healthy males-Implications for body fat distribution.

OBJECTIVE: Obesity and upper-body fat elevates cardiometabolic risk. However, mechanisms predisposing to upper-body fat accumulation are not completely understood. In males, low testosterone (T) frequently associates with obesity, and estrogen deficiency may contribute to upper-body adiposity. This study examines the effects of overfeeding-induced weight gain on changes in gonadal hormones in healthy males and its association with regional fat depots. METHODS: Twenty-five males (age: 29.7 ± 6.9 years; BMI: 24.7 ± 3.1 kg/m2 ) were overfed for 8 weeks to gain approximately 5% body weight. Chang

Experience of social harms among female sex workers following HIV self-test distribution in Malawi: results of a cohort study.

BACKGROUND: In Malawi, female sex workers (FSW) have high HIV incidence and regular testing is suggested. HIV self-testing (HIVST) is a safe and acceptable alternative to standard testing services. This study assessed; whether social harms were more likely to be reported after HIVST distribution to FSW by peer distributors than after facility-based HIV testing and whether FSW regretted HIVST use or experienced associated relationship problems. METHODS: Peer HIVST distributors, who were FSW, were recruited in Blantyre district, Malawi between February and July 2017. Among HIVST recipients a pr
