The global pattern of sexually transmitted diseases.

The 'traditional' sexually transmitted diseases (syphilis, gonorrhoea and so on) have now been supplemented but not replaced by a 'second generation' including chlamydial infections, trichomoniasis, virus diseases (herpes simplex, hepatitis A and B), and protozoal infections in homosexuals. The results, due to a multiplicity of factors, are at present little short of alarming, but there are hopeful signs.

[Control of sexually transmitted diseases in Senegal].

STD are an important public health problem in numerous developing countries. Although satisfactory diagnostic and therapeutic means are available, the incidence of STD is increasing. Among the causes for this are sociological factors, like the weakening of customs and the family unit, and the development of tourism, which stimulates prostitution. There is a marked ignorance of the population in respect to STD. The Senegalese Government, WHO, and the Geneva-based Sandoz Institute launched in 1976 a joint programme of service, training and sesearch. The research aims at developing a preventive a

Peter the Great and sexually transmitted diseases.

Shortly after syphilis appeared in Europe at the time of Columbus' voyage to the New World, the big pox, as it was often known, became a serious issue in Russia for diagnosis, treatment, and prevention. Members of the Russian royal family were made aware of the disease from adolescence onward. Czar Peter the Great had many sexual contacts and could have contracted any number of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) that were quite common in his era. Nevertheless, contributions analyzed from available sources by his contemporary doctors, and later from medical analyses, reveal no evidence that h…

Sexually transmitted diseases syndromic approach: urethral discharge.

Urethral discharge (UD) in men is one of the most identifiable sexually transmitted infections (STI)-associated syndromes. UD performs very well, giving the possibility of an accurate diagnosis, a treatment at first encounter, a rapid cure with effective drugs, a modification of the risk behavior. Furthermore the patient is informed about the infectious nature of STDs, the transmission through sexual intercourse, the increased risks of infertility and other complications and, finally, the importance of completing treatment, even after improvement. Applying the syndromic approach to UD has resu

[Sexually transmitted diseases in Poland in 2008].

In 2008 as far as statistics are concerned this situation did not change to the worse. Number of cases of syphilis has significantly risen (by over 100) compared to 2003-4 and this tendency seams to be fixed. Number of serological screening tests for syphilis has dramatically dropped resulting in decreasing of the likelihood of discovering the symptomless cases of syphilis. It seems, that reports of gonorrhoea and nongonococcal urethritis are incomplete.

Detecting and treating common sexually transmitted diseases.

In the UK, many sexually transmitted infections (STIs) are best managed in conjunction with an appropriate specialist, for example, a genitourinary medicine practitioner or a Microbiologist. In most of the world, however, gynaecologists routinely manage STIs in women. This article focuses on the most important infections in women, and those in which management is changing. It also addresses the current status, and new developments around the syndrome of pelvic inflammatory disease (PID), which essentially is an STI.
