Risk factors for shoulder and elbow injuries in adolescent baseball pitchers.

BACKGROUND: There is little evidence supporting current safety recommendations for adolescent pitchers. HYPOTHESIS: Pitching practices of adolescent pitchers without history of arm injury will be significantly different from those of adolescent pitchers who required shoulder or elbow surgery. STUDY DESIGN: Case control study; Level of evidence, 3. METHODS: Ninety-five adolescent pitchers who had shoulder or elbow surgery and 45 adolescent pitchers who never had a significant pitching-related injury completed a survey. Responses were compared between the 2 groups using t tests and chi(2) ana

Brachial plexus injuries and shoulder dystocia: medico-legal commentary and implications.

Brachial plexus injuries may occur in association with or without recognised shoulder dystocia. Until recently many medico-legal experts argued that these injuries resulted from the negligent use of excessive or misdirected traction. These experts did not accept that the natural forces of labour could cause the injury. In cases of recognised shoulder dystocia, modern obstetric practice has recognised the importance of correct maternal positioning and the need to avoid excessive or misdirected traction, also the importance of not applying a rotational force to the fetal head. Informed practice

Shoulder injuries from alpine skiing and snowboarding. Aetiology, treatment and prevention.

There has been a decrease in the overall injury rate and the rate of lower extremity injuries for alpine skiing, with a resultant increase in the ratio of upper extremity to lower extremity injuries. Upper extremity injuries account for 20 to 35% of all injuries during alpine skiing and nearly 50% of all injuries during snowboarding. The most common upper extremity injuries during skiing are sprain of the thumb metacarpal-phalangeal joint ulnar collateral ligament, and the most common in snowboarding is wrist fracture. Shoulder injuries from skiing and snowboarding have been less well characte…

[Possibilities for using sonography in sports injuries of the shoulder joint].

Sonography is a useful tool for the examination of the shoulder joint. Concomitant cartilaginous and soft tissue lesions (Hill-Sachs, effusion, cuff-tears) can be visualized. Subacromial pathology can be differentiated. The type of instability in the unstable shoulder can be documented. The ultrasound investigation is of diagnostic value for the unstable shoulder as well as for the impingement shoulder in athletes. Therefore it may be helpful for planning the adequate treatment and also for the follow up of the patients.

Shoulder strength following acromioclavicular injury.

The acromioclavicular (AC) joint enjoys the dubious distinction of being one of the few joints in the body whose total dislocation is routinely treated by simply leaving the joint dislocated. Adherents of both conservative and operative treatment have presented reasons for their viewpoints. Residual shoulder weakness has been offered as a sequela of untreated acromioclavicular injury and a reason for repairing the joint. An objective evaluation of shoulder strength would be valuable in determining the optimum treatment for this injury. The purpose of our study was to quantitate, using the Cybe

Reliability of high-resolution ultrasound and magnetic resonance arthrography of the shoulder in patients with sports-related shoulder injuries.

INTRODUCTION: The shoulder, a very complex joint, offers a wide range of pathologies. Intraarticular abnormalities and rotator cuff injuries are mainly assessed and diagnosed by magnetic resonance arthrography (MRA). In contrast to this well-established gold standard, high-resolution ultrasound (US) offers an additional easy and excellent modality to assess the shoulder joint. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to evaluate in which anatomic structures and pathologies comparable results of US and MRA could be achieved. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this IRB-approved prospective study 67 pati

Passive shoulder mobility and active shoulder external rotation recovery in upper-trunk brachial plexus birth injuries after nerve repair.

AIM: To examine the relationship between active shoulder external rotation recovery and passive glenohumeral mobility in children with upper-trunk brachial plexus birth injury (BPBI) after nerve surgery. METHOD: This retrospective analysis included children with upper-trunk BPBI who underwent primary surgery of the C5 and/or C6 spinal nerves with 2 or more years of follow-up. Linear mixed models were used to analyse passive and active external rotation in adduction at ages 1, 3, 5, 7, and 15 years, adjusted for diagnosis and suprascapular nerve reconstruction strategy (grafting, transfer, neu

Shoulder injuries in Brazilian professional football players: epidemiological analysis of 3828 games.

OBJECTIVES: Football is a globally played sport that poses potential risks for musculoskeletal injuries. Upper-limb injuries have a lower incidence rate than lower-limb injuries but can still cause absenteeism and performance impairment in football players. This descriptive epidemiological study aimed to evaluate and compare the epidemiological data on shoulder injuries among professional football players in two major Brazilian football championships. METHODS: Data were collected throughout the championships, and club physicians medically evaluated each player during official games using two …

Shoulder, upper arm and elbow injuries in high school men's American football.

In order to reduce shoulder, upper arm and elbow injury rates in American football, identifying injury risk factors and any underlying associations is needed. No prior study has done such characterization at the high school level. A descriptive epidemiology study was performed using data from the National Athletic Treatment, Injury, and Outcomes Network Surveillance Program (NATION-SP) from the years 2011/12 to 2013/14 on high school football athletes. Four hundred and sixty total injuries were found in the dataset. Acromioclavicular (AC) sprains had the highest incidence of all injuries (0.06

Prevention and treatment of elbow and shoulder injuries in the tennis player.

Tennis injuries are common in both the upper and lower extremities. The most common, and often most difficult, upper extremity injuries are shoulder tendinitis and tennis elbow (lateral and medial). Key considerations in the treatment of tendinitis include an understanding of the injury process and the resultant character and quantity of the pathologic spectrums. Tendon degeneration rather than tendon repair is the primary pathologic entity secondary to intrinsic muscle-tendon overload. For best treatment results, the protocols of treatment, both surgical and nonsurgical, must be individualize
