The host-parasite relationships in pyridoxine (vitamin B6) deficient cotton rats infected with Litomosoides carinii (Nematoda: Filaroidea).

This paper demonstrates that the establishment and growth of the filarial nematode parasite, Litomosoides carinii, is reduced in pyridoxine-deficient cotton rats. Young cotton rats were assigned to one of three dietary: vitamin B6-deficient cotton rats (B6-AL) were fed a pyridoxine-free diet ad libitum; pair-fed controls (B6 + PF) were fed the same amount of pyridoxine-free diet as animals in the deficient group and given daily oral supplements of 100 micrograms pyridoxine; and pyridoxine-sufficient controls (B6 + AL) were fed the pyridoxine-free diet ad libitum and supplemented daily with 100

Purifying selection constrains the evolution of Juquitiba virus in wild Oligoryzomys nigripes communities.

Juquitiba virus (JUQV) is endemic in Oligoryzomys nigripes across several South American countries and causes hantavirus pulmonary syndrome when transmitted to humans via infectious saliva or excreta. We developed a next-generation sequencing (NGS) pipeline to generate the first complete reference genome for assessing the genetic diversity of JUQV in Oligoryzomys populations inhabiting the Mbaracayú Biosphere Reserve within the Atlantic Forest of Paraguay. From 32 additional Oligoryzomys specimens, we obtained 17 S- and M-segment viral RNA (vRNA) genomes from lungs with 94-100% sequence covera

Ecoepidemiological determinants of Borrelia infection in sigmodontine rodents from the Delta and Parana Islands ecoregion, Argentina.

We screened lung tissue from 770 sigmodontine rodents sampled in the Delta and Paraná Islands ecoregion for Borrelia spp. and obtained sequences clustered within the Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato (s.l.) complex. Seventeen individuals were PCR-positive (prevalence 2.2%), distributed mainly in Akodon azarae (n = 11) and across five additional species. Using GLMMs that accounted for site and trapping session, infection probability was positively associated with individual body length and with ecological proxies of prior host and vector abundance: Ak. azarae abundance two sessions earlier (lag S

Efferocytosis-Driven M2 Macrophage Impairs Fibrotic Encapsulation and Promotes Echinococcus multilocularis Growth in Cotton Rats (Sigmodon hispidus).

Alveolar echinococcosis, caused by Echinococcus multilocularis, exhibits significant species-dependent susceptibility. This study compared the early hepatic tissue responses to E. multilocularis in highly susceptible cotton rats (Sigmodon hispidus) and laboratory mice (DBA/2 and AKR/N). Following oral administration of E. multilocularis eggs, cotton rats developed a greater number of hepatic lesions within 2 weeks, whereas mice required 4 weeks to develop smaller lesions. Histopathology revealed accelerated multilocular cyst formation in cotton rats. Unlike mice, which formed dense collagenous

Mercury concentrations in Seaside Sparrows and Marsh Rice Rats differ across the Mississippi River Estuary.

Mercury (Hg) concentrations and their associated toxicological effects in terrestrial ecosystems of the Gulf of Mexico are largely unknown. Compounding this uncertainty, a large input of organic matter from the 2010 Deepwater Horizon oil spill may have altered Hg cycling and bioaccumulation dynamics. To test this idea, we quantified blood concentrations of total mercury (THg) in Seaside Sparrows (Ammospiza maritima) and Marsh Rice Rats (Oryzomys palustris) in marshes west and east of the Mississippi River in 2015 and 2016. We also tested for a difference in THg concentrations between oiled and

Emerging hantaviruses in Central Argentina: First case of Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome caused by Alto Paraguay virus, and a novel orthohantavirus in Scapteromys aquaticus rodent.

Orthohantaviruses are emerging rodent-borne pathogens that cause Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome in humans. They have a wide range of rodent reservoir hosts and are transmitted to humans through aerosolized viral particles generated by the excretions of infected individuals. Since the first description of HPS in Argentina, new hantaviruses have been reported throughout the country, most of which are pathogenic to humans. We present here the first HPS case infected with Alto Paraguay virus reported in Argentina. Until now, Alto Paraguay virus was considered a non-pathogenic orthohantavirus since

Reproductive responses of rice field rats (Rattus argentiventer) following treatment with the contraceptive hormones, quinestrol and levonorgestrol.

The rice field rat, Rattus argentiventer, is a significant pest of rice in Southeast Asia. Fertility control methods have the potential to provide safe and effective alternatives to control methods that often include indiscriminate use of rodenticides or electric barriers. The aim of this laboratory study was to assess uptake of bait coated with different concentrations of the contraceptive hormones, quinestrol (E) and levonorgestrel (P), delivered alone and in combination (i.e. EP-1) and determine the short-term effects on reproductive parameters of adult male and female R. argentiventer. Anti-vascular endothelial growth factor antibody monotherapy causes destructive advanced periodontitis in rice rats (Oryzomys palustris).

OBJECTIVE: Angiogenesis inhibitors (AgI) are commonly used in combination chemotherapy protocols to treat cancer, and have been linked to osteonecrosis of the jaw (ONJ). However, it is unknown if AgI therapy alone is sufficient to induce ONJ. We have previously established an ONJ model in rice rats with localized periodontitis that receive zoledronic acid (ZOL). The purpose of this study was to use this model to determine the role of anti-vascular endothelial growth factor A (anti-VEGF) antibody treatment of rice rats with localized maxillary periodontitis. We hypothesized that rice rats with

Hermaphrodites and supernumerary testicular lobes in Schistosoma mansoni (Trematoda: Schistosomatidae) analyzed by brightfield and confocal microscopy.

Schistosoma mansoni belongs to the dioecious Schistosomatidae. The occasional observation of males with rudimentary female characteristics is thought to attest the hermaphroditic roots of this parasite. Supernumerary testicular lobes also are recurrently seen in this helminth, but their morphology and origin are elusive. Here, we investigated the morphology of the supernumerary lobes from 15 S. mansoni males and similar structures of 2 females in whole mounts by brightfield and confocal laser scanning microscopy. The follicles in the females were not regarded as testicular lobes, but 1 male ha

Experimental fascioliasis in the rat-like hamster, Tscherskia triton, and other rodent hosts.

Experimental infection with Fasciola hepatica and parthenogenetic Fasciola sp. in laboratory animals have been conducted in rats and rabbits. Inoculation of less than 5 metacercariae into rat-like hamsters, Tscherskia triton, is sufficient to establish Fasciola infections. The prepatent period of F. hepatica and the parthenogenetic Fasciola sp. in T. triton was shorter than that in rats and rabbits, suggesting that T. triton is a suitable experimental model for these flukes. In contrast, F. gigantica infection in T. triton did not yield adult flukes; T. triton, is therefore, considered to be a

Detection of Rickettsia asembonensis in Fleas (Siphonaptera: Pulicidae, Ceratophyllidae) Collected in Five Counties in Georgia, United States.

We conducted a molecular survey of Rickettsia in fleas collected from opossums, road-killed and live-trapped in peridomestic and rural settings, state parks, and from pet cats and dogs in Georgia, United States during 1992-2014. The cat flea, Ctenocephalides felis (Bouché) was the predominant species collected from cats and among the archival specimens from opossums found in peridomestic settings. Polygenis gwyni (Fox) was more prevalent on opossums and a single cotton rat trapped in sylvatic settings. Trapped animals were infested infrequently with the squirrel flea, Orchopeas howardi (Baker)

Prevalence of Food Impaction-Induced Periodontitis in Conventionally Housed Marsh Rice Rats (Oryzomys palustris).

Marsh rice rats (Oryzomys palustris) fed a pelleted diet high in sucrose and casein have been used as a model for moderate to severe periodontitis. Here we characterize the prevalence, location, and histopathologic features of food-impaction lesions (FIL), a unique type of oral event, in rice rats fed standard pelleted rodent chow from weaning until 34 wk of age. Healthy female rats (n = 90; age, 4 wk) were weaned into groups (n = 10 to 24) and were euthanized at 4, 16, 22, 28, or 34 wk of age. At necropsy, high-resolution photographs of the 4 jaw quadrants were examined by 3 independent obser

Epithelial cell lines of the cotton rat (Sigmodon hispidus) are highly susceptible in vitro models to zoonotic Bunya-, Rhabdo-, and Flaviviruses.

BACKGROUND: Small mammals such as bats and rodents have been increasingly recognized as reservoirs of novel potentially zoonotic pathogens. However, few in vitro model systems to date allow assessment of zoonotic viruses in a relevant host context. The cotton rat (Sigmodon hispidus) is a New World rodent species that has a long-standing history as an experimental animal model due to its unique susceptibility to human viruses. Furthermore, wild cotton rats are associated with a large variety of known or potentially zoonotic pathogens. METHODS: A method for the isolation and culture of airway e

Fine-scale genetic structure of woodrat populations (Genus: Neotoma) and the spatial distribution of their tick-borne pathogens.

Dusky-footed woodrats are territorial cricetid rodents that individually occupy large stick houses from which they foray to gather food, find mates, and engage in other activities. These rodents are often bitten by Ixodes spp. ticks and are reservoirs of some strains of tick-borne bacterial pathogens such as Anaplasma phagocytophilum and Borrelia burgdorferi. Limited dispersal by hosts and vectors could create fine-scale population structure where related hosts and pathogen exposure are co-distributed in space. To quantify population genetic structure and infection status, we genotyped 167 woo

The safety of ONRAB® in select non-target wildlife.

ONRAB(®) is a recombinant human adenovirus type 5 (HAd5) with the rabies glycoprotein gene incorporated into its genome. ONRAB(®) has been used in Canada as an oral rabies vaccine in target wildlife species such as: red fox (Vulpes vulpes), raccoon (Procyon lotor), and striped skunk (Mepthis mephitis). We evaluated the safety of ONRAB(®) in non-target wildlife species likely to contact the vaccine baits during oral rabies vaccine campaigns in the United States. We investigated the effects of oral inoculation of high titer ONRAB(®), approximately ten times the dose given to target species, in w

Morphometric analysis of the placenta in the New World mouse Necromys lasiurus (Rodentia, Cricetidae): a comparison of placental development in cricetids and murids.

BACKGROUND: Stereology is an established method to extrapolate three-dimensional quantities from two-dimensional images. It was applied to placentation in the mouse, but not yet for other rodents. Herein, we provide the first study on quantitative placental development in a sigmodontine rodent species with relatively similar gestational time. Placental structure was also compared to the mouse, in order to evaluate similarities and differences in developmental patterns at the end of gestation. METHODS: Fetal and placental tissues of Necromys lasiurus were collected and weighed at 3 different s

Receptor characterization and susceptibility of cotton rats to avian and 2009 pandemic influenza virus strains.

Animal influenza viruses (AIVs) are a major threat to human health and the source of pandemic influenza. A reliable small-mammal model to study the pathogenesis of infection and for testing vaccines and therapeutics against multiple strains of influenza virus is highly desirable. We show that cotton rats (Sigmodon hispidus) are susceptible to avian and swine influenza viruses. Cotton rats express α2,3-linked sialic acid (SA) and α2,6-linked SA residues in the trachea and α2,6-linked SA residues in the lung parenchyma. Prototypic avian influenza viruses (H3N2, H9N2, and H5N1) and swine-origin 2

Transmission cycles of Borrelia burgdorferi and B. bissettii in relation to habitat type in northwestern California.

This study was undertaken to determine which rodent species serve as primary reservoirs for the Lyme disease spirochete Borrelia burgdorferi in commonly occurring woodland types in inland areas of northwestern California, and to examine whether chaparral or grassland serve as source habitats for dispersal of B. burgdorferi- or B. bissettii-infected rodents into adjacent woodlands. The western gray squirrel (Sciurus griseus) was commonly infected with B. burgdorferi in oak woodlands, whereas examination of 30 dusky-footed woodrats (Neotoma fuscipes) and 280 Peromyscus spp. mice from 13 widely s
