A 72-year-old woman with a prior sigmoid resection for colon cancer underwent a right hemicolectomy after a colonoscopy revealed a mass in the hepatic flexure. A preoperative biopsy at colonoscopy showed tubulovillous dysplasia with high-grade neoplasm. The final specimen pathology revealed benign mucosal elements with mucin pools consistent with colitis cystica profunda (CCP). CCP is a benign lesion; no further treatment was necessary after resection. To our knowledge, this is the first reported case of CCP in the right colon, presenting atypically in the hepatic flexure. This case report bri

Extranodal Hodgkin disease presenting as a primary localized neoplasm is uncommon, with rare case reports describing primary sites other than lymph nodes. The gastrointestinal tract is the most frequent site of involvement by extranodal Hodgkin disease, typically involving the stomach or small bowel. To date, we have been able to find only one fully documented case of Hodgkin disease of the sigmoid colon confirmed by immunohistochemical studies. We report a case of extranodal Hodgkin disease involving the transverse colon, presenting as inflammatory bowel disease and documented by light micros

Collision tumor of the appendix is an extremely rare entity, defined as the coexistence of two independent tumors located in the same site without transitional changes. We describe in this report the case of a 75-year-old man who presented with an acute abdominal pain, nausea and vomiting. Physical examination revealed an abdominal distension with a hypogastric mass. Abdominal computed tomography showed colonic obstruction related to a sigmoid tumor. Therefore, a total colectomy was made. Macroscopic specimen examination showed a sigmoid tumor associated to a cystic dilatation of the appendix

The purpose of this presentation is to point out the importance of this new diagnosis and treatment method, recently incorporated. The studies were done with the Fibroscope F9-A with doble channel, equipped with an desection smear for polipectomies and an extracting forceps. The patients arrive with their intestine perfectly cleaned with classical methods. This detail is most important for the polipectomies. If the local conditions aren't the desired, presence of bowels or barium of an previous enema, we postpone both, examination and polipectomy, because those are causes of false diagnosis in

The authors describe a case of a submucosal lipoma of the large intestine. Family, physiological, and remote anamnesis of the patient was negative to inflammatory or neoplastic intestinal diseases. The symptomatology was not characteristic like the several cases reported in the literature, by abdominal cramps, subocclusion or total occlusion crisis and rectal bleeding. The patient presented with a symptomatology characterized by altered bowel habit, and evacuations of blood-stained feces. The clinical diagnosis was difficult for the aspecific symptoms referred. A barium enema and colonoscopy e

We describe a successful simultaneous laparoscopic treatment of a gallstone and gastric and colonic neoplasms. The patient was a 72-year-old man with epigastric discomfort. Abdominal ultrasound revealed a gallstone 2 cm in diameter. Gastroscopy revealed a 3-cm protruding submucosal tumor in the gastric fundus and colonoscopy revealed a 2-cm sessile lesion in the sigmoid colon. He underwent simultaneous laparoscopic treatment of the 3 organs because of the high risk of perforation or bleeding after gastric or colonic resection. This required the use of 5 ports, and a 3.5-cm incision was made in

The authors present a statistics on 32 cases of proctosigmoid junction cancer and discuss diagnostic and management aspects. This localization of the colorectal cancer has certain characteristic features, among which most important are its severe complications. The treatment of choice is the high anterior proctosigmoid resection with restoration of digestive passage, with or without colostomy. In the complicated cases the interventions will be performed in two or even three stages. Hartman's surgery is also indicated in the complicated cancers and in the compromised patients. The postoperative

The present paper describes a patient with four independent carcinomas associated with ulcerative colitis. Subtotal colectomy with lymph node dissection was done on June 28, 1978. The operative specimen revealed a carcinoma at the descending colon, two independent cancerous lesions and papillary polyps at the sigmoid colon and a scirrhous, flat elevated neoplasm at the rectum. These carcinomas were surrounded by lesions of various degrees of epithelial dysplasia, suggesting precancerous change. Carcinomas and precancerous lesions were stained for carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) by the CEA perox

One hundred and three patients with carcinoma in situ in the rectum, rectosigmoid and sigmoid colon were evaluated retrospeactively. The majority of the lesions occurred within an adenomatous polyp. A synchronous invasive carcinoma of the colon was present in 43 patients, whereas 42 patients had carcinoma in situ unassociated with another malignant neoplasm or major medical illness. In the latter group of patients, adequate treatment of carcinoma in situ resulted in cure, while two patients who refused treatment died of invasive carcinoma of the colon. Adequate treatment could be obtained by l
