Developmental change and consistency in parental interactions with school-age children who have mental retardation.

Developmental changes and within-family consistency in parent-child interactions were examined for mothers and fathers of school-age children (6 to 18 years) with mental retardation. At Time 1 and 18 to 24 months later, 98 families (29 single, 69 two-parent) with a child who had mild or moderate mental retardation completed semi-structured interaction sessions in their homes. As expected, both positive and negative exchanges decreased longitudinally, and cross-sectional comparisons revealed fewer parent commands, less child noncompliance, fewer child negatives, and less parent positive recipro

Identification of a novel Candida metapsilosis isolate reveals multiple hybridization events.

Candida metapsilosis is a member of the Candida parapsilosis species complex, a group of opportunistic human pathogens. Of all the members of this complex, C. metapsilosis is the least virulent, and accounts for a small proportion of invasive Candida infections. Previous studies established that all C. metapsilosis isolates are hybrids, originating from a single hybridization event between two lineages, parent A and parent B. Here, we use MinION and Illumina sequencing to characterize a C. metapsilosis isolate that originated from a separate hybridization. One of the parents of the new isolate

Kids These Days! A Cross-Temporal Meta-Analysis of Changes in Emotional and Behavioral Problems of Population-Based Samples Over the Past Decades.

There is a general belief that mental health problems are increasing in younger generations, though little objective comparisons exist. The current meta-analysis examines changes in subclinical mean-level overall symptom burden and shifts in specific domains among population-based samples of youth (1-18 years) globally over the last four decades. We search systematically in PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, EBSCO and Google Scholar with pre-registered criteria. Included studies (k = 175, N = 418,528) use the standardized and cross-culturally validated Child Behavior Checklist with parent-, teach

Reliability and Repeatability of At-Home Parent-Reported Height and Weight Measurement of Young Children.

Accurate anthropometric measurement is essential for monitoring child growth, yet access to in-person measurement collection can be limited. This study examines the reliability and repeatability of height and weight measurements taken at home by a single parent compared to those taken by a trained researcher team in a clinical setting. Thirty children aged 2-5 years enrolled in the TARGet Kids! cohort were measured by two trained researchers working in a pair and by their parent at home using standardized instructions. Technical error of measurement (TEM), relative TEM (%TEM), and the coeffici…

Behavioural and nondirective parent training for children with externalising disorders: First steps towards personalised treatment recommendations.

For children with externalising disorders, parent training programmes with different theoretical foundations are available. Currently, there is little knowledge concerning which programme should be recommended to a family based on their individual needs (e.g., single parenthood). The personalised advantage index (PAI) indicates the predicted treatment advantage of one treatment over another. The aim of the present study was to examine the usefulness of this score in providing individualised treatment recommendations. The analysis considered 110 parents (per-protocol sample) of children (4-11 y…

Deterministic interrelation between elastic moduli in critically elastic materials.

Critically elastic materials-those that are rigid with a single state of self-stress-can be generated from parent systems with two states of self-stress by the removal of one of many constraints. We show that the elastic moduli of the resulting homogeneous and isotropic daughter systems are interrelated by a universal functional form parametrized by properties of the parent. In simulations of both spring networks and packings of soft spheres, judicious choice of parent systems and bond removal allows for the selection of a wide variety of moduli and Poisson's ratios in the critically elastic s

Moderators of treatment effect in a randomised controlled trial of single- and multi-family therapy for anorexia nervosa in adolescents and emerging adults.

INTRODUCTION: Multi-family therapy for anorexia nervosa (MFT-AN) is a novel, group-based intervention that intensifies single-family therapy for anorexia nervosa (FT-AN), with the aim of improving outcomes. The current study explored treatment moderators in a randomised controlled trial (N = 167) of FT-AN and MFT-AN for young people (adolescents/emerging adults aged 13-20 years) with anorexia nervosa. METHODS: Data were analysed using multiple linear regression. Six hypothesised baseline participant and parent factors were tested as possible moderators of treatment effect on end-of-treatment

Effect of Ni-Doping on the Optical, Structural, and Electrochemical Properties of Ag29 Nanoclusters.

Atomically precise metal nanoclusters (NCs) can be compositionally controlled at the single-atom level, but understanding structure-property correlations is required for tailoring specific optical properties. Here, the impact of Ni atom doping on the optical, structural, and electrochemical properties of atomically precise 1,3-benzene dithiol (BDT) protected Ag29 NCs is studied. The Ni-doped Ag29 (NiAg28(BDT)12) NCs, are synthesized using a co-reduction method and characterized using electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI MS), ion mobility spectrometry (IMS), and X-ray photoelectron sp

Family structure transitions and educational outcomes: Explaining heterogeneity by parental education in Germany.

Recent research has documented that the effect of parental separation on children's educational outcomes depends on socioeconomic background. Yet, parental separation could lead to a stable single-parent family or to a further transition to a stepfamily. Little is known about how the effect of family structure transitions on educational outcomes depends on the education of parents and stepparents, and there has been limited empirical research into the mechanisms that explain heterogeneity in the effects of family transitions. Using longitudinal data from the German Socio-Economic Panel and mod

The influence of access to care on the health literacy of families in Mexico.

Health literacy (HL) is essential to understanding health information and achieving health goals. Unfortunately, limited information is available on how parent HL impact child health outcomes. This is critical to understand in areas of the world where access to healthcare services is limited or unavailable. Thus, the purpose of this study was to assess the moderating influence of access to care on the relationship between parent HL and child health outcomes in Mexico. Using a geographically stratified convenience sample survey design, we gathered a sample of 373 parent-child dyads throughout M

Improving the safety net for single mothers who face serious barriers to work.

Rebecca Blank explores a weakness of the welfare reforms of the mid-1990s--the failure of the Temporary Assistance to Needy Families program to address the plight of so-called "hard to employ" single mothers and their children. TANF has moved many women on the welfare caseload into work, but the services it provides are not intensive or flexible enough to meet the needs of women with multiple disadvantages who find it difficult to get and keep full-time employment. Blank notes that many of these women have lost welfare benefits because of their failure to find work. Increasingly, studies show

Substantiated Reports of Child Maltreatment From the Canadian Incidence Study of Reported Child Abuse and Neglect 2008: Examining Child and Household Characteristics and Child Functional Impairment.

OBJECTIVE: Identifying child and household characteristics that are associated with specific child maltreatment types and child functional impairment are important for informing prevention and intervention efforts. Our objectives were to examine the distribution of several child and household characteristics among substantiated child maltreatment types in Canada; to determine if a specific child maltreatment type relative to all other types was associated with increased odds of child functional impairment; and to determine which child and household characteristics were associated with child fu
