Absence epilepsy in rats is reduced by deprivation of REM sleep.

Effects of deprivation of REM sleep on spontaneous occurring spike wave complexes in the WAG/Rij rat strain were studied by means of the pendulum and platform technique. During the deprivation period, which lasted three days, variable results were obtained. While a suppression of the total duration of epileptic activity was found for the pendulum deprived animals, no such evident effect was detected in the platform deprived rats. Probably, instrumental effects are responsible for these differential results. On the other hand, subsequent to deprivation, a prolonged reduction of the total durati

Acute escitalopram treatment inhibits REM sleep rebound and activation of MCH-expressing neurons in the lateral hypothalamus after long term selective REM sleep deprivation.

RATIONALE: Selective rapid eye movement sleep (REMS) deprivation using the platform-on-water ("flower pot") method causes sleep rebound with increased REMS, decreased REMS latency, and activation of the melanin-concentrating hormone (MCH) expressing neurons in the hypothalamus. MCH is implicated in the pathomechanism of depression regarding its influence on mood, feeding behavior, and REMS. OBJECTIVES: We investigated the effects of the most selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor escitalopram on sleep rebound following REMS deprivation and, in parallel, on the activation of MCH-containing neu

REM sleep latency changes after version 2.1 of the AASM manual for scoring sleep.

BACKGROUND: The classical criteria for scoring REM sleep changed in version 2.1 of the AASM manual for scoring sleep, by allowing N1 epochs with atonia precedent and contiguous to definite REM sleep to be scored as REM sleep in the absence of rapid eye movements when the EEG was compatible. This may shorten the REM latency in the Multiple Sleep Latency Test (MSLT) in naps with wake/N1 to REM transitions, characteristic of narcolepsy type 1. Since REM latency of <5 or <6 min is a biomarker of NT-1 we have assessed the impact of this change in scoring REM sleep in the MSLT. METHODS: Ninety-two

Upper airway collapsibility during REM sleep in children with the obstructive sleep apnea syndrome.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: In children, most obstructive events occur during rapid eye movement (REM) sleep. We hypothesized that children with the obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS), in contrast to age-matched control subjects, would not maintain airflow in the face of an upper airway inspiratory pressure drop during REM sleep. DESIGN: During slow wave sleep (SWS) and REM sleep, we measured airflow, inspiratory time, inspiratory time/total respiratory cycle time, respiratory rate, tidal volume, and minute ventilation at a holding pressure at which flow limitation occurred and at 5 cm H2O below t

Sleep EEG oscillations and synaptic plasticity in memory consolidation across NREM and REM sleep.

Based on a synthesis of recent advances, this review elucidates the distinct yet synergistic roles of non-rapid eye movement (NREM) and rapid eye movement (REM) sleep in memory consolidation. During NREM sleep, cortical slow oscillations (SOs) establish a temporal framework by alternating between UP and DOWN states, facilitating cross-regional communication. SOs phase-couple with thalamic spindles to coordinate hippocampal sharp-wave ripples (SWRs), thereby driving the reactivation and transfer of labile hippocampal memories to neocortical networks for long-term storage. Concurrent synaptic ho

[REM sleep behavior disorder: an overt access to motor and cognitive control during sleep].

Rapid eye movement (REM) sleep behavior disorder (RBD) is characterized by violent, or potentially violent, movements during REM sleep, corresponding to enacted dreams. During sleep monitoring, there is a partial or total loss of the normal muscle atonia during REM sleep. REM sleep behavior disorder predominantly affects elderly subjects without any other disease (idiopathic RBD, a precursor of Parkinson disease and Lewy body dementia) or suffering from various neurological and neurodegenerative diseases, mainly synucleinopathies. In addition to being a treatable cause of nocturnal injury of t

Rapid Eye Movement (REM) sleep behavior disorder: a sleep disturbance affecting mainly older men.

Rapid Eye Movement (REM) sleep behavior disorder is characterized by the intermittent loss of REM-related muscle atonia and the appearance of elaborated motor behaviors (sometimes violent behavior) and vocalizations associated with dream mentation. Nine patients were diagnosed in our Sleep Disorders Unit with this syndrome during the period August 1997-April 2000. All were male, average age 67.9 +/- 6.9 years. The complaint of all our patients was the occurrence of violent or injurious sleep behavior mainly during the dream stage. Jumping or falling out of bed and slapping or beating their wiv

Selective REM sleep deprivation during daytime I. Time course of interventions and recovery sleep.

Although repeated selective rapid eye movement (REM) sleep deprivation by awakenings during nighttime has shown that the number of sleep interruptions required to prevent REM sleep increases within and across consecutive nights, the underlying regulatory processes remained unspecified. To assess the role of circadian and homeostatic factors in REM sleep regulation, REM sleep was selectively deprived in healthy young adult males during a daytime sleep episode (7-15 h) after a night without sleep. Circadian REM sleep propensity is known to be high in the early morning. The number of intervention

Respiration in NREM and REM sleep after upper airway surgery for obstructive sleep apnoea.

To verify whether upper airway surgery in obstructive sleep apnoea syndrome affects differently respiration in NREM and REM sleep, 22 patients were studied by polysomnography before and three months after surgical treatment. On the average, treatment improved respiration during both sleep states, but no significant interaction was found between sleep state and effect of surgical treatment. According to the response to treatment, three groups of patients were identified: the first group (N = 6), with an improvement in apnoea-hypopnoea index (AHI), percentage of sleep time spent in apnoea and hy

REM sleep behavior disorder in 703 sleep-disorder patients: the importance of eliciting a comprehensive sleep history.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of our study was to evaluate the frequency of REM sleep behavior disorder (RBD) in a mixed sleep laboratory population and to assess potential associations. Moreover, we investigated referral diagnoses of patients subsequently diagnosed with RBD and assessed the frequency of incidental RBD. METHODS: Charts and polysomnographic reports of 703 consecutive patients comprising the full spectrum of ICSD-2 sleep disorders [501 males, 202 females; mean age, 51.0+/-14.1 years (range: 10-82 years)] were carefully reviewed. The vast majority of patients were adults (98.7%). Patients

REM sleep favors the restructuring of problem-related semantic associations.

REM sleep is considered a 'hyperassociative' state enhancing the connections between weakly related concepts, thereby facilitating memory restructuring - a critical process proposed in creative problem-solving. We empirically explore this hypothesis by testing participants on a riddle before and after a 90-minute incubation period including rapid eye movement (REM) sleep, only non-REM sleep, or wakefulness. We quantified memory restructuring by computing differences in problem-related semantic memory network (SemNets) properties between pre- and post-incubation. For each sleep stage, we extrac

REM sleep fragmentation is associated with impaired configural threat learning.

Rapid eye movement (REM) phases of sleep are consistently disrupted after trauma and in post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). REM disruption impairs cued fear learning, a core element of trauma processing linked to PTSD risk and symptom persistence. Configural threat learning depends on the hippocampus and may be influenced by REM sleep, though its role in humans remains unclear. Here, 55 healthy participants were randomly assigned to REM sleep fragmentation or a control group without sleep disruption for two nights. On the final day, participants completed a configural threat learning task w

Low-dimensional population dynamics in the brainstem gate REM sleep.

Rapid-eye-movement (REM) sleep is generated in the brainstem, but the brainstem population dynamics that drive transitions to REM sleep remain largely unknown. Here, combining mouse Neuropixels recordings and dimensionality reduction, we found that population activity in the midbrain and pons is dominated by two components, one of which captures strong infraslow fluctuations in neural activity. During transitions from non-REM (NREM) to REM sleep, the population activity followed a stereotypic trajectory that was preceded by an increase in the infraslow component. Our analysis revealed-across a

REM-related obstructive sleep apnea: low AHI-high hypoxemia paradox.

PURPOSE: REM-related obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) presents a paradox where a low apnea-hypopnea index (AHI) may mask significant disease. We compared polysomnography, comorbidities, and oxygenation metrics across OSA phenotypes to determine if AHI-based severity classifications underestimate the nocturnal hypoxemia in REM-related OSA. METHODS: Retrospectively, 378 OSA patients were classified as REM-related (AHIREM ≥2× AHINREM; AHINREM <5·h⁻¹, n = 30), REM-aggravated (AHIREM ≥2× AHINREM; AHINREM ≥5·h⁻¹, n = 63), or stage-independent (n = 285). We analyzed sleep architecture, AHI values, oxyg

Cholinergic basal forebrain degeneration in isolated REM sleep behaviour disorder.

Although growing evidence suggests that cholinergic basal forebrain degeneration is linked to cognitive impairment and axial motor symptoms in Lewy body disorders, the cholinergic contribution to their prodromal phase remains largely unknown. Herein, we aimed to address three important yet unresolved problems focusing on prodromal Lewy body disorders: (i) to examine whether and where basal forebrain degeneration begins; (ii) to determine how such alterations are related to other brain morphometric changes and monoaminergic deficits; and (iii) to investigate the extent to which basal forebrain

Altered Sleep Patterns in Wilson's Disease Including Shortened REM Latency.

Background and Clinical Significance: Wilson's disease (WD) is an inherited, multisystem disorder of copper metabolism, resulting in pathological copper accumulation in various tissues (predominantly the liver and brain) and leading to secondary organ damage and corresponding clinical manifestations. Sleep disorders are frequent in neurodegenerative disorders, but remain underdiagnosed and poorly characterized in WD. Case presentation: We describe the case of a 51-year-old patient with WD presenting predominantly with neurological symptoms, who underwent routine video-polysomnography (v-PSG).

Periodic limb movements in REM sleep: A periodically concerning phenomenon.

Periodic limb movements of sleep (PLMS) are involuntary, sleep-related phenomena characterized by periodic episodes of repetitive, stereotypical movements of the limbs. The presence PLMS increases with age but are frequently comorbid with other sleep disorders and other medical, neurologic, and psychiatric disorders, and can be triggered by medications and psychoactive substances. PLMS typically occur during non-rapid eye movement sleep and are generally absent during rapid eye movement (REM) sleep, with exception of patients with REM behavior disorder (RBD). However, even in the absence of RB

Clinical subtypes in patients with isolated REM sleep behaviour disorder.

Patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) show a broad heterogeneity in clinical presentation, and subtypes may already arise in prodromal disease stages. Isolated REM sleep behaviour disorder (iRBD) is the most specific marker of prodromal PD, but data on clinical subtyping of patients with iRBD remain scarce. Therefore, this study aimed to identify iRBD subtypes. We conducted comprehensive clinical assessments in 66 patients with polysomnography-proven iRBD, including motor and non-motor evaluations, and applied a two-step cluster analysis. Besides, we compared iRBD clusters to matched healthy
