The neurocognitive effects of sleep disruption in children and adolescents.

Sleep problems in children and adolescents are common, and sleep disruption is associated with a wide range of behavioral, cognitive, and mood impairments, including hyperactivity, reduced school grades, and depression. Insufficient or fragmented sleep may induce sleepiness, which is associated with problematic behavior, impaired learning, and/or negative mood. Furthermore, treatment of sleep disruption, by improving sleep hygiene or treating specific sleep disorders, is often associated with improvements in daytime performance, suggesting a common mechanism for the behavioral manifestations. …

"Let's talk about sleep": a qualitative examination of levers for promoting healthy sleep among sleep-deprived vulnerable adolescents.

OBJECTIVE: Deficient sleep is highly prevalent in disadvantaged adolescents and contributes to a range of adverse health and behavioral outc … eine consumption, which was also high in this sample. There was also a general lack of awareness of sleep hygiene practices and recommendations. Participants reported regulating food intake and physical activity, using allopathic sleep aids, creating a comfortable sleeping environment, and a routine as some strategies to improve sleep. CONCLUSION: Results from …

Restricting short-wavelength light in the evening to improve sleep in recreational athletes - A pilot study.

Sleep is crucial for recovery and skill acquisition in athletes. Paradoxically, athletes often encounter difficulties initiating and maintai … ndition (LR; amber-lens glasses), or the no-light restriction condition (nLR; transparent glasses). Sleep hygiene practices, actigraphy and diary-based sleep estimates were monitored during four consecutive nights within each condition. Sleep hygiene practices did not significantly differ between conditions. Results indicate that blocking short-wavelength light …

[Falling asleep at the steering wheel--a dangerous sequel of sleep apnea].

Excessive sleepiness is a common but underrecognised and preventable cause of road traffic accidents. Acute and chronic sleep deprivation, inadequate sleep hygiene, and sleep disorders are important causes of hypersomnolence. Since the latter is one of the cardinal manifestations of the obstructive sleep apnoea syndrome, affected patients are at particular risk of being involved in traffic accidents. Counselling of hypersomnolent drivers on appropriate behavioural modification, early diagnosis and treatment of sleep disorders, as well as information of the public on the risks of accidents rela…

Sleep in the Athlete.

Sleep is important for not only general health but also for lowering injury risk and maintaining athletic performance. Sleep disorders are prevalent in athletes, and taking a sleep history, evaluating sleep quality, and addressing other related factors including mental health are essential in diagnosing and understanding sleep disorders. Other methods such as polysomnography, actigraphy, and sheet sensors can also be used. Treatment options for sleep disorders include sleep hygiene, cognitive behavioral therapy, medication, and addressing contributing factors. For athletes, sleep can also be a…

Sleep after Traumatic Brain Injury.

Sleep disturbances are common after traumatic brain injury of all levels of severity, interfere with acute and long-term recovery, and can persist for years after injury. There is increasing evidence of the importance of sleep in improving brain function and recovery. Noticing and addressing sleep disturbances are important aspects of nursing care, especially for the prevention or early recognition of delirium. Nonpharmacologic interventions can improve sleep. Teaching about the importance of sleep after traumatic brain injury, promoting sleep hygiene, and multidisciplinary approaches to addre…

Current treatments to counter sleep dysfunction as a pathogenic stimulus of fibromyalgia.

Fibromyalgia is characterized by chronic widespread pain, fatigue and nonrestorative sleep. Polysomnography showed reduced short-wave sleep and abnormal alpha rhythms during nonrapid eye movement sleep in patients with fibromyalgia. However, sleep dysfunction might be pathogenic in fibromyalgia since myalgia and fatigue could be induced in healthy individuals by disrupting sleep. Poor sleep quality was a major risk factor for the subsequent development of chronic widespread pain in healthy pain-free individuals. Sleep disruption leads to impairment of the descending pain inhibition pathways. A

Sleep regularity and duration are associated with depression severity in a nationally representative United States sample.

BACKGROUND: Sleep hygiene is integral to health, and sleep regularity may be associated with mental health outcomes in addition to duration. Although sleep and depression relationships are well-studied, the relative impact of different sleep factors remains unclear. As patient-specific factors and health behaviors influence sleep and mental health, we investigated associations between sleep and depression severity considering such factors in a United States sample of adults. METHODS: Two cycles (2011-2012, 2013-2014) from the National Health and Nutritional Examination Survey were studied. Ob…

Healthy Sleep Practices for Consumers of Home Total Parenteral Nutrition: A Mixed-Methods Community-Based Participatory Study.

BACKGROUND: Consumers of overnight home parenteral nutrition (HPN) often experience sleep disruption; however, existing healthy sleep recommendations are widely inapplicable to consumers. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this mixed-methods, community-based participatory research study was to develop tailored recommendations on healthy sleep practices for HPN consumers. METHODS: The multipart study involved the following: 1) an initial draft of sleep recommendations based on the evaluation of existing general sleep hygiene guidelines by an expert panel of clinicians and consumers with lived experience;…

Higher vulnerability to poor circadian light hygiene in individuals with a history of COVID-19.

Seven-day actigraphy was performed within 1 month in 122 community-dwelling adults (mean age 24.40 y, 31 (25.4%) men) in the same city of Tyumen, Russia. Groups with different COVID-19 status (present, COVID-19(+), n = 79 vs absent, COVID-19(-), n = 43) did not differ in mean age, gender distribution, or body mass index. Vaccination status was equally represented in the COVID groups. We found that COVID-19 status, a history of SARS-CoV-2 infection, was differentially associated with daylight susceptibility. Daylight exposure was estimated using parametric and non-parametric indices: 24-h Ampli

Evidence-Based Intervention for Sleep Deprivation in the Intensive Care Unit: A Clinical Review.

Sleep disturbances affect 47-60% of intensive care unit (ICU) patients and often persist after discharge, contributing to adverse outcomes such as prolonged recovery, increased delirium risk, and higher mortality. Sleep assessment in ICU settings is complex; although polysomnography is the gold standard, its practical limitations restrict its use. Consequently, subjective tools like the Richards-Campbell Sleep Questionnaire are widely used for bedside evaluation, while objective methods such as actigraphy and bispectral index monitoring are gaining acceptance. Interventions to improve sleep qu

Light Hygiene for Circadian Health: A Molecular Perspective.

In discussing the interplay between light exposure/blue light exposure (LE/BLE) and circadian health, we emphasize the role of light hygiene and its effects on maintaining sleep, mood, and metabolic health, among other physiological processes. We define compromised circadian light hygiene as low dynamic range and/or irregular 24-hour patterns of LE. Poor light hygiene interferes with circadian entrainment and weakens circadian robustness alignment, thereby increasing health hazards. We provide an overview of the complex molecular pathways underlying light perception and downstream signaling. G

Hypersomnia in children: interface with psychiatric disorders.

Patients being evaluated in child psychiatry clinics for behavior and mood disturbances frequently exhibit daytime sleepiness. Conversely, patients being evaluated for hypersomnia by sleep specialists may have depressed mood or hyperactive and aggressive behavior. The etiology of daytime sleepiness in children and adolescents is diverse and includes inadequate sleep hygiene, obstructive sleep apnea, delayed sleep phase syndrome, idiopathic hypersomnia, periodic hypersomnia, narcolepsy, and mood disorders per se. Treatment of a sleep disorder can have a favorable impact on alertness and quality…
