There are two species of snakes associated with snake bite poisoning in Chile: Philodryas chamissonis and Tachymenis peruviana. A case assoc … reated with antihistamines, systemic steroids, analgesia and antibiotics for 7 days. Other cases of snake bites published in Chile are reviewed and treatment and prevention strategies are proposed.

Snake bite by Cerastes vipera in children: report of two cases.

Two children, ages 2 and 4 years, envenomed by the snake Cerastes vipera are presented. Both children suffered from local pain and swelling of the hand that spread up to the shoulder in the 2-year-old and up to the elbow in the 4-year-old. A hemorrhagic blister was noted on the bitten finger in the younger patient. Urinary retention, tachycardia, and a slight prolongation of prothrombin time was noted in the 2-year-old, whereas hypertension and fever were observed in the 4-year-old. In both cases, the swelling receded gradually and the patients were discharged from the hospital after several d

A national hospital-based survey of snakes responsible for bites in Thailand.

Snakes which had been killed and brought to hospital with the patients they had bitten were collected in 80 district and provincial hospitals throughout 67 provinces in Thailand in order to establish the geographical distribution and relative medical importance of the venomous species. Of the 1631 snakes collected, 1145 were venomous: Malayan pit vipers (Calloselasma rhodostoma), green pit vipers (Trimeresurus albolabris) and Russell's vipers (Daboia russelii) were the most numerous, while T. albolabris, C. rhodostoma and spitting cobras ('Naja atra') were the most widely distributed. In 22 ca

Clinical experience in the therapy of bites from exotic snakes in Berlin.

Since there are nearly no indigenous poisonous snakes in Germany, snake bites by poisonous snakes are rare. Most serious snake bites reported to poison information centres or treated at hospitals are caused by exotic snakes that are kept in private households. Only few types of antivenom are stored in emergency depots in Germany including polyvalent antivenoms from commercial sources. Since experience with the treatment of poisonous snake bites is limited, the records of the Intensive Care Unit and the Poison Information Centre of the Universitätsklinikum Rudolf Virchow from 1980-1991 were eva…

Snake bite in Australia--the problems involved and a protocol for hospital management.

Despite a great deal of original research into Australian snakes and their complex venoms, there is still confusion about the correct first-aid and hospital management of the bitten patient. This review illustrates the difficulties in diagnosis and treatment and presents a well tried protocol for the successful management of snake bite.

Randomized controlled trial on the effective dose of anti-snake venom in cases of snake bite with systemic envenomation.

Snake bite is the common cause of morbidity and mortality in India. Snake antivenom, although very effective, is expensive, scarce, and associated with side effects. The conventional dose may not be required in all cases and a smaller dose may be as effective. A randomized double blind controlled trial was conducted to compare the effect of lower versus the conventional (high) dose. Patients presenting within 24 hours of snake bite with hematological or neurological evidence of systemic envenomation were included in the study. Patients were randomized either to receive high dose (2 vials over

Bites by the colubrid snake Philodryas patagoniensis: a clinical and epidemiological study of 297 cases.

We retrospectively analyzed 297 proven cases of Philodryas patagoniensis bites admitted to Hospital Vital Brazil (HVB), Butantan Institute, São Paulo, Brazil, between 1959 and 2008. Only cases in which the causative animal was brought and identified were included. Part of the snakes brought by the patients was still preserved in the collection maintained by the Laboratory of Herpetology. Of the 297 cases, in 199 it was possible to describe the gender of the snake, and seventy three (61.3%) of them were female. The length of snakes (snout-vent length) ranged from 160 to 1080 mm. In 117 snakes t

Clinical Characteristics and Outcomes of Asian Coral Snake Bites in Thailand: A Retrospective Cohort Study.

Asian coral snakes are distributed throughout Southeast Asia, including Thailand, but clinical data on their envenomation remain limited. Using a 10-year retrospective dataset from the Ramathibodi Poison Center, we investigated the epidemiology, clinical characteristics, management, and outcomes of Asian coral snake envenomation in Thailand. Patient demographics, clinical and laboratory data, treatments, and outcomes were analyzed descriptively. Fifty-two patients were included. Sinomicrurus macclellandi was the most frequently reported species. Most bites occurred during the rainy season and

Once, twice, three times a bite victim: recidivism in snake envenomation.

INTRODUCTION: We believe there are certain behaviors that may predispose people to being bitten by a snake. The purpose of this study was to describe cases reported to the North American Snakebite Registry in which the snakebite victim acknowledged multiple lifetime snakebites and to test the hypothesis that male sex, intentional handling of the snake, alcohol consumption, and maintaining snakes in captivity are associated with sustaining multiple snakebites in a lifetime. METHODS: This was a retrospective review of de-identified patient information reported to the snakebite registry between

Clinical characteristics and use of antibiotics in a group of patients with snake bites in Colombia.

INTRODUCTION: Millions of snake bites occur worldwide each year. Clinical practice guidelines generally do not recommend the use of prophylactic antibiotics. OBJECTIVE: To determine the sociodemographic, clinical, and pharmacological variables and the use of antibiotics in a group of patients with snake bites in Colombia. METHODS: A retrospective cross-sectional study was carried out. Patients affiliated with a Colombian health insurer who presented with snake bites between 2015 and 2022 were included. The cases were identified from the National Public Health Surveillance System. Sociodemogr…

Predictors of hypopituitarism due to vasculotoxic snake bite with acute kidney injury.

PURPOSE: Hypopituitarism frequently develops following vasculotoxic snake bite complicated by acute kidney injury (AKI). Well defined prospective studies of prevalence of hypopituitarism and its predictors in vasculotoxic snake bites complicated by AKI are unavailable. METHODS: Fifty-one consecutive patients of AKI following vasculotoxic snake bite were evaluated for various clinical/biochemical parameters (including Free T4, TSH, Cortisol, ACTH, total testosterone, FSH, LH, prolactin, and IGF-1). Diabetes insipidus was evaluated in relevant cases. Twenty minutes whole blood clotting time (WB…
