Hypothetical Interventions on Frailty Heterogeneous Trajectories of Older Patients with Gastric Cancer Using Parametric G-Formula.

BACKGROUND: Frailty is prevalent in older patients with gastric cancer, seriously affecting their prognosis. The time-varying nature of frailty increases the difficulty of intervention. This study aimed to estimate the effect of hypothetical interventions on the risk of frailty heterogeneous trajectory (FHT) at physical, psychological, familial, and social levels to provide a basis for the subsequent design of intervention programs of FHT. PATIENTS AND METHODS: The data of hypothetical interventions from a longitudinal follow-up study of older patients with gastric cancer were obtained for 38

The Classroom Social Climate Scale (CSC) and the School Resilience Scale (SRS) were used as data collection instruments. The data were analysed using correlations and linear regressions to examine associatio

Person-Centered Approach to Understanding Psychosocial Stressor Subgroups and Cardiovascular Disease: New Perspectives From the Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis Study.

BACKGROUND: This study examined the longitudinal associations of psychosocial stress subgroups with cardiovascular disease (CVD) events and whether social support, neighborhood cohesion, and physical activity modified these associations in MESA (Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis). METHODS AND RESULTS: Data from 6349 adults (aged: 62.2 ± 10.2 years; 52.9% women) from the MESA study with no prior CVD in 2000 to 2002 (baseline) were used in this analysis. Latent class analysis was used to specify distinct psychosocial stress subgroups based on self-reported stressors stemming from respondent

Study Protocol on Rapid Measurement of Novel Harm Reduction Housing on HIV Risk, Treatment Uptake, Drug Use, and Supply.

Harm reduction services save lives and facilitate treatment uptake for people who are unhoused and use drugs. It is unknown whether provision of harm reduction services within a transitional housing environment affects treatment uptake, drug supply, or drug using behaviors. This study focused on mitigation of the impacts of mass relocation and uptake of services by residents of harm reduction housing (HRH) to generate novel insights on individual drug use, social cohesion, collective efficacy, and health outcomes resulting from HRH. We used a mixed-methods study leveraging our prior Rapid Asse…

The Impact of Sports Betting Shops on Crime Patterns in Ghana.

This paper examines how proximity to sports betting shops affects local crime patterns in Ghana, providing evidence from a developing country context where limited financial buffers may amplify gambling's environmental effects. Using geo-referenced data on licensed betting operators and Afrobarometer survey responses, the study finds that doubling the distance from betting shops reduces crime probability by 3 percentage points. This effect is particularly pronounced for property crimes, with a 5.5 percentage point reduction in burglary risk, while showing no significant impact on violent crime

Social Capital, Community Capacity, and Health.

The capacity to practice health behavior is different for each individual. Community capacity and social capital deal with understanding the relationship between community members and with the factors that promote or delay collective activities. This study examines existing literature in relation to social capital, health, and community capacity. Bonding social capital shows the average value of the extent to which individuals trust each other and participate in groups, whereas bridging social capital shows the average value of the extent to which individuals participate in different formal gr

METHODS: We analyzed 2 waves of data (2011 and 2015) from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study. The analytical sample included 9,285 respondents aged 45 and older at baseline. A Social Ecological Approach to Understanding Posttraumatic Stress, Emotion Dysregulation, and Resilience Among Complex Trauma Survivors.

Complex trauma (CT), or chronic interpersonal trauma that begins early in life, has been associated with a multitude of negative outcomes, including posttraumatic stress symptoms (PTSS) and emotion dysregulation. Some CT survivors also exhibit adaptive functioning, such as resilience. Social and contextual factors may have an impact on the expression of adverse and adaptive outcomes for CT survivors, yet have been neglected. As such, the current study utilized a social ecological model to examine individual-level (i.e., age, sex, race, income, cumulative CT exposure), microsystem-level (i.e.,

Local social environmental factors are associated with household food insecurity in a longitudinal study of children.

BACKGROUND: Food insecurity is a significant public health problem in North America and elsewhere. The prevalence of food insecurity varies by country of residence; within countries, it is strongly associated with household socioeconomic status, but the local environment may also play an important role. In this study, we analyzed secondary data from a population-based survey conducted in Québec, Canada, to determine if five local environmental factors: material and social deprivation, social cohesion, disorder, and living location were associated with changes in household food insecurity over …

The Impact of Relationships Within Combat Units on Post-Deployment Suicide Risk.

Multiple deployment factors may affect suicidality in combat veterans. The relationships between combat deployments and suicidality are complex and not completely understood. Studies of stress in the military and psychological effects of military actions are mostly focused on stressors relating to combat operations. However, many studies suggest that interactions within combat units affect post-deployment psychiatric conditions, suicidal ideation, and behavior. The goal of this article is to review and discuss how relationships within combat units may influence post-deployment suicide risk. St

Social network, perceived satisfaction with neighborhoods and depressive symptoms among older adults in Korea.

The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has significantly affected social networks and perceived satisfaction with neighborhoods, potentially affecting the mental health of older adults. This study investigated the changes in these factors and their association with depressive symptoms among Korean older adults before and during the COVID-19 pandemic. The prevalence of depressive symptoms slightly increased during the pandemic (4.7-4.9%). Social networks weakened, whereas perceived neighborhood satisfaction improved. Notably, the protective effect of social networks against depressive

Neighborhood Gentrification and Food Insecurity Among Urban Older Adults: Evidence From New York City.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Gentrification is a prevalent neighborhood development process in urban areas across the United States. Prior studies have identified the influence of gentrification on late-life health and quality of life, yet little is known about its relationship with food insecurity, an important public health issue for older adult populations. Using New York City as a case study, this study investigated associations between living in a gentrifying neighborhood and food insecurity, as well as the mediating roles of neighborhood environment factors-social cohesion, public transpor…
