Building for speech: designing the next-generation of social robots for audio interaction.

There have been significant advances in robotics, conversational AI, and spoken dialogue systems (SDSs) over the past few years, but we still do not find social robots in public spaces such as train stations, shopping malls, or hospital waiting rooms. In this paper, we argue that early-stage collaboration between robot designers and SDS researchers is crucial for creating social robots that can legitimately be used in real-world environments. We draw from our experiences running experiments with social robots, and the surrounding literature, to highlight recurring issues. Robots need better sp

Depression mediates the association between insula-frontal functional connectivity and social interaction anxiety.

High rates of comorbidity between depression and anxiety are frequently observed. However, few studies have investigated the relationship between depression and social interaction anxiety using a dimensional approach. The current study aimed to explore the associations between depression and social interaction anxiety with a multivariate approach in a comparably large dataset (n = 194, 95 males). All participants completed a structural and a resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) scan and self-report measures of depression via Beck's Depression Inventory II and social inter…

Sports and Social Interaction: Sports Experiences and Attitudes of the Urban Running Community.

Social change and development influence the motivational factors of people's sports participation, exposing the need for socialization and interaction. The purpose of this study is to investigate the interaction pattern of the urban running community and the behavior pattern of runners with the help of social interaction theory, and to explore the inner connection between their community movement and social interaction. Ten senior members of marathon urban running societies were selected to conduct two rounds of in-depth interviews which were analyzed using qualitative thematic analysis to und…

Gene-environment interaction: New insights into perceived parenting and social anxiety among adolescents.

BACKGROUND: Social anxiety symptoms (SAS) are among the most common mental health problems during adolescence, and it has been shown that parenting influences the adolescent's level of social anxiety. In addition, it is now widely assumed that most mental health problems, including social anxiety, originate from a complex interplay between genes and environment. However, to date, gene-environment (G × E) interactions studies in the field of social anxiety remain limited. In this study, we have examined how 274 genes involved in different neurotransmission pathways interact with five aspects of

Social interaction reward: A resilience approach to overcome vulnerability to drugs of abuse.

Drug addiction is a multifactorial disorder resulting from the complex interaction between biological, environmental and drug-induced effect … ffects of social stress in animal models on drug use, particularly cocaine. In contrast, we suggest social interaction reward when available as an alternative to drug use as an approach contracting negative stress effects and increasing resistance to drug use. Indeed, interventions, which aim at enhancing resilience to stress through the facilitation of social inter …

OXTR methylation modulates exogenous oxytocin effects on human brain activity during social interaction.

Oxytocin (OT) effects on brain function and behavior are mediated by the oxytocin receptor (OXTR). The distribution of OXTR in the brain can profoundly influence social behavior. Emerging evidence suggests that DNA methylation of OXTR influences OXTR expression. Previously, we conducted a pharmaco-functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI) study in which healthy subjects were randomized to 24 IU intranasal OT or placebo and imaged with fMRI while playing a dyadic social interaction task known as the iterated Prisoner's Dilemma (PD) game with same-sex partners. Here, we investigate whether DN…

Social interaction anxiety and personality traits predicting engagement in health risk sexual behaviors.

Individuals with social interaction anxiety, a facet of social anxiety disorder, withdraw from or avoid social encounters and generally avoid risks. However, a subset engages in health risk sexual behavior (HRSB). Because sensation seeking, emotion dysregulation, and impulsivity predict engagement in HRSB among adolescents and young adults, the present study hypothesized that latent classes of social interaction anxiety and these personality traits would differentially predict likelihood of engagement in HRSB. Finite mixture modeling was used to discern four classes: two low social interaction…

Let's chat: developmental neural bases of social motivation during real-time peer interaction.

Humans are motivated to interact with each other, but the neural bases of social motivation have been predominantly examined in non-interact … y. These findings demonstrate that both reward and social cognitive brain systems support real-time social interaction in middle childhood. An interactive approach to understanding social reward has implications for clinical disorders, where social motivation is more affected in real-world contexts.

Personal space regulation in childhood autism: Effects of social interaction and person's perspective.

Studies in children with Typical Development (TD) and with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) revealed that autism affects the personal space regulation, influencing both its size (permeability) and its changes depending on social interaction (flexibility). Here, we investigate how the nature of social interaction (Cooperative vs. Uncooperative) and the person perspective influence permeability and flexibility of interpersonal distance. Moreover, we tested whether the deficit observed in ASD children, reflects the social impairment (SI) in daily interactions. The stop-distance paradigm was used to…

The Core Extrusion Schema-Revised: Hiding Oneself Predicts Severity of Social Interaction Anxiety.

Cognitive behavioral models of social anxiety disorder (SAD) suggest that fear of negative evaluation is a core fear or vulnerability for SA … diagnosed with generalized SAD. Specifically, the Hidden Self subscale may help explain severity of social interaction anxiety. This measure could be used with individuals diagnosed with generalized SAD to design exposures targeting these core beliefs.

Posttraumatic stress and social anxiety: the interaction of traumatic events and interpersonal fears.

Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and social anxiety disorder (SAD) are frequently comorbid among veteran and community samples. Several studies have demonstrated significant comorbidity between trauma, PTSD, and social anxiety (SA), and a growing number of studies have explored the nature of this association. Although a diagnosis of either PTSD or SAD alone can result in significant impairment in social and occupational functioning, these difficulties are often magnified in persons suffering from both disorders. This review describes the current state-of-the-art regarding the co-occurrence

Effects of 5,7 dichlorokynurenic acid on conflict, social interaction and plus maze behaviors.

Antagonists at the N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptor site share a number of properties including anticonvulsant and anxiolytic-like behaviors. In the social interaction and elevated plus maze assay, two non-conditioned paradigms predictive of anxiolytic activity, the NMDA antagonists 5,7 DCKA, CPP and MK-801, as well as diazepam, all significantly increased both social interaction time and open arm exploration time, respectively. Likewise, in the Cook and Davidson conditioned conflict paradigm, the NMDA antagonists 5,7 dichlorokynurenic acid (DCKA; 100 and 173 mg/kg), (+-)-3-(2-carboxypiper…

Severe impairments of social interaction and associated abnormalities in children: epidemiology and classification.

The prevalence, in children aged under 15, of severe impairments of social interaction, language abnormalities, and repetitive stereotyped behaviors was investigated in an area of London. A "socially impaired" group (more than half of whom were severely retarded) and a comparison group of "sociable severely mentally retarded" children were identified. Mutism or echolalia, and repetitive stereotyped behaviors were found in almost all the socially impaired children, but to a less marked extent in a minority of the sociable severely retarded. Certain organic conditions were found more often in th…

How environmental perception influence depression and anxiety: the mediating role of social interaction.

BACKGROUND: Depression and anxiety disorders are increasingly prevalent worldwide due to ongoing economic and social transformations, positioning them as major mental health concerns. Research indicates that favorable natural environments and high-quality social interactions can positively affect residents' mental health and well-being. However, studies exploring the mechanisms through which environmental perceptions influence depression and anxiety are still limited. METHODS: This study utilizes data from the Health Life Satisfaction Survey of Yangtze River Phase II Delta (HLSSYRD II), colle…

Self-other generalisation shapes social interaction and is disrupted in borderline personality disorder.

Generalising information from ourselves to others, and others to ourselves allows for both a dependable source of navigation and adaptability in interpersonal exchange. Disturbances to social development in sensitive periods can cause enduring and distressing damage to lasting healthy relationships. However, identifying the mechanisms of healthy exchange has been difficult. We introduce a theory of self-other generalisation tested with data from a three-phase social value orientation task - the Intentions Game. We involved humans with (n=50) and without (n=53) a diagnosis of borderline persona

Implementing social and affective touch to enhance user experience in human-robot interaction.

In this paper, we discuss the potential contribution of affective touch to the user experience and robot performance in human-robot interaction, with an in-depth look into upper-limb prosthesis use as a well-suited example. Research on providing haptic feedback in human-robot interaction has worked to relay discriminative information during functional activities of daily living, like grasping a cup of tea. However, this approach neglects to recognize the affective information our bodies give and receive during social activities of daily living, like shaking hands. The discussion covers the emo

Intermittent Fasting Improves Social Interaction and Decreases Inflammatory Markers in Cortex and Hippocampus.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a psychiatric condition characterized by reduced social interaction, anxiety, and stereotypic behaviors related to neuroinflammation and microglia activation. We demonstrated that maternal exposure to Western diet (cafeteria diet or CAF) induced microglia activation, systemic proinflammatory profile, and ASD-like behavior in the offspring. Here, we aimed to identify the effect of alternate day fasting (ADF) as a non-pharmacologic strategy to modulate neuroinflammation and ASD-like behavior in the offspring prenatally exposed to CAF diet. We found that ADF incr…

Social interaction links active musical rhythm engagement and expressive communication in autistic toddlers.

Rhythm is implicated in both social and linguistic development. Rhythm perception and production skills are also key vulnerabilities in neurodevelopmental disorders such as autism which impact social communication. However, direct links between musical rhythm engagement and expressive communication in autism is not clearly evident. This absence of a direct connection between rhythm and expressive communication indicates that the mechanism of action between rhythm and expressive communication may recruit other cognitive or developmental factors. We hypothesized that social interactions, includi…
