Social appearance anxiety and aggressive behavior in children with dentofacial deformities: a mediation and profile analysis of family support and self-stigma.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the relationship between social appearance anxiety and aggressive behavior in children with dentofacial deformities, to investigate the mediating role of self-stigma and the moderating role of family support within this relationship, and to identify heterogeneous subgroups of social appearance anxiety and self-stigma through a person-centered approach. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey design was employed. A total of 482 children diagnosed with dentofacial deformities were recruited from Peking University School and Hospital of Stomatology between September 2025 and Marc

Self-stigma and suicide cognitions in substance use disorder: the mediating role of psychological distress and the moderating role of social support.

BACKGROUND: Individuals with substance use disorders (SUD) experience substantial psychological and social difficulties. A prominent concern is the internalization of stigmatizing societal attitudes, leading to feelings of guilt and worthlessness. This self-stigma has been linked to depression, anxiety, and stress and may contribute to suicide-related cognitions. This study aimed to examine the relationship between self-stigma and suicide cognitions, and to evaluate the potential mediating roles of psychological distress (depression, anxiety, and stress), as well as the moderating role of perc

[HIV-Related Stigma and Discrimination in Spain: Seven Years of the Social Pact for Non-Discrimination and Equal Treatment Associated with HIV].

The stigma and discrimination associated with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection constitute one of the main challenges for controlling the HIV pandemic globally. Despite biomedical advances that have turned HIV infection into a manageable chronic condition in contexts with access to treatment, the social and cultural dimensions of HIV continue to affect fundamental rights and the quality of life of people living with HIV, thereby hindering the achievement of the goal of eliminating AIDS as a Public Health threat by 2030. In Spain, the institutional response to this issue has evolved

Exploring the social experiences, stigma and discrimination, faced by women with gestational diabetes: A collaborative qualitative study and item-pool development.

AIM: To explore experiences of stigma related to gestational diabetes (GDM) among Australian women and collaboratively develop a comprehensive item pool to assess experienced and internalised GDM-specific stigma. METHODS: A GDM Lived Experience Advisory Group (G-LEAG; n = 4) informed all aspects of a two-phase qualitative research process. Phase 1 included semi-structured online interviews with 20 women with current or recent GDM. Reflexive thematic analysis identified drivers and facilitators, markers, manifestations, impacts and protective mechanisms of GDM stigma. Findings informed the dev

Development of the Experiences of Sex Work Stigma Scale Using Item Response Theory: Implications for Research on the Social Determinants of HIV.

While HIV stigma has received significant attention, limited work has been conducted on the measurement of intersecting stigmas. We developed the Experiences of Sex Work Stigma (ESWS) scale in the Dominican Republic (DR) and Tanzania. We conducted in-depth interviews with 20 female sex workers (FSW) per country to identify scale domains followed by cognitive debriefing interviews to assess content validity. Items were administered in a survey to FSW in DR (n = 211) and Tanzania (n = 205). Factor analysis established four sex work stigma domains including: shame (internalized), dignity (resiste

Perceived social support and mental health among shidu parents: The moderating role of stigma following the loss of an only child.

Perceived social support is a psychosocial resource that protects the mental health of parents who have lost an only child (shidu parents), but its benefits likely vary depending on stigma-a challenge that these parents face in social contexts. We used data from 482 shidu parents (Mage = 66.63, SDage = 6.88) who reported perceived support (overall and by specific source, family, peer, and others), depressive symptoms, perceived stigma, and demographic characteristics. Linear regressions showed that family support and others support were negatively associated with depressive symptoms, consisten

Linguistic markers of depression and emergent self-stigma in online self-disclosures: A mixed-methods study on Chinese social media.

BACKGROUND: Depression is a global mental health crisis, exacerbated by stigma that hinders open expression, particularly in collectivistic cultures. While linguistic markers of depression (e.g., self-focus, negative emotions) have been identified in clinical, Western contexts, their replication in non-clinical, everyday online discourse and their intersections with self-stigma remain underexplored. METHODS: Using a mixed-methods design, we collected 627 depression disclosures and 729 control posts from the social media platform Xiaohongshu via automated web crawling. Posts were analyzed usin

Impact of social media health promotion on HIV/AIDS stigma reduction: the role of multi-language campaign and emotional empathy.

HIV/AIDS stigma remains a global challenge, restricting healthcare access and reinforcing discrimination. This study examines how social media health promotion reduces HIV/AIDS stigma, focusing on the mediating role of multi-language campaigns and the moderating effect of emotional empathy. Using a cross-sectional survey of 659 social media users analyzed with PLS-SEM, the results show that social media health promotion significantly reduces stigma. Multi-language campaigns partially mediate this effect, highlighting the importance of linguistic inclusivity in health communication. Emotional e

Exploring gender differences in HIV-related stigma and social support in a low-resource setting: A qualitative study in the Dominican Republic.

HIV-related stigma can affect health by compromising coping and social support. Gender differences in stigma experiences and social support are underexplored, particularly in the Caribbean. We conducted semi-structured interviews (N = 32) with patients at two HIV clinics in the Dominican Republic. Transcripts were coded using qualitative content analysis (deductive and inductive approaches) to identify themes regarding stigma experiences and social support, which were then compared across men and women participants to identify gender differences. While both men and women described experienced

Depression, stigma and social isolation: the psychosocial trifecta of primary chronic cutaneous lupus erythematosus, a cross-sectional and path analysis.

OBJECTIVE: Depression is common in individuals with chronic cutaneous lupus erythematosus (CCLE). However, how CCLE may impact patients' psychological well-being is poorly understood, particularly among disproportionally affected populations. We examined the relationships between depression and psychosocial factors in a cohort of predominantly Black patients with primary CCLE (CCLE without systemic manifestations). METHODS: Cross-sectional assessment of individuals with dermatologist-validated diagnosis of primary CCLE. NIH-PROMIS short-forms were used to measure depression, disease-related s

Stigma and social participation in Southern India: differences and commonalities among persons affected by leprosy and persons living with HIV/AIDS.

Stigma is a common phenomenon worldwide and infectious diseases like HIV/AIDS and leprosy are often associated with high levels of stigma. Several studies have been conducted concerning the effects of stigma and the impact on social participation, but comparative studies are rare. The objective of this study was to identify differences and similarities between HIV/AIDS and leprosy-related stigma. From April till July 2009, 190 questionnaire-based interviews were conducted to assess the levels of internalized stigma (Internalized Stigma of Mental Illness scale), perceived stigma (Explanatory Mo

Navigating Social Influences: The Impact of Anticipated HPV Vaccination Stigma from Friends and Family on College Students' HPV Vaccination Intent.

BACKGROUND: Family and friends play a dual role in supporting and hindering young adults' decisions about the human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine. However, the mechanisms by which anticipated HPV vaccination stigma from these social circles affects vaccination intent remain largely understudied. This study applied the Information-Motivation-Behavioral Skills model to examine how anticipated HPV vaccination stigma from family and friends influences vaccination intent and its underlying mechanisms. METHODS: Unvaccinated young adults (N = 728) ages 18 to 26 years in Texas completed a survey to as

Right-wing authoritarianism, social dominance, system justification, and conservative political ideology as predictors of mental health stigma: The Hungarian case.

BACKGROUND: Insights from mental health stigma research indicate the importance of societal and political views on mental health perceptions. Most studies originate from typical Western neo-liberal settings and focus on generic mental health issues. Our research explores these associations in Hungary, an understudied post-communist context with significant stigma levels, examining a broad range of stigmas related to both general and three specific mental illnesses: schizophrenia, depression, and alcohol use disorder (AUD). AIMS: The study aims to connect a wide array of political dispositions

HIV-Related Stigma, Social Support, and Symptoms of Mental Health Disorders Among People with HIV Initiating HIV Care in Cameroon.

HIV-related stigma has been associated with poor mental health among people with HIV (PWH). Social support is a potentially modifiable factor that may buffer negative mental health sequelae of HIV-related stigma. Little is known about the extent to which the modifying effect of social support differs across mental health disorders. Interviews were conducted with 426 PWH in Cameroon. Log binomial regression analyses were used to estimate the association between high anticipated HIV-related stigma and low social support from family or friends and symptoms of depression, anxiety, post-traumatic s

HIV-related stigma, disclosure and social support: experiences among young pregnant and postpartum women living with HIV in South Africa.

ABSTRACTYoung pregnant and postpartum women living with HIV (WLHIV) are at high risk of poor antiretroviral therapy (ART) outcomes, which may be driven partly by HIV-related stigma. We conducted in-depth interviews with 20 pregnant and postpartum WLHIV aged 19-24 years to understand how different forms of HIV-related stigma manifest in their lives, as well as their experiences of HIV-status disclosure and social support. Participants described profound levels of perceived stigma in their community, including gossip from other young women and judgement from older adults. Consequently, participa

Harnessing Social Media, Influencers, and Community Engagement to Confront HIV-Related Stigma in Peru: Longitudinal Descriptive Study of the DiME Campaign.

BACKGROUND: HIV remains a public health challenge worldwide, and HIV-related stigma constitutes a major barrier to prevention, testing, and treatment efforts. Mitigating HIV-related stigma is crucial to improving outcomes for people living with HIV and reaching global HIV targets. Social media platforms and influencers are increasingly used for public health communication and may provide an opportunity to shape social norms and reduce HIV-related stigma among adolescents and young adults. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to describe the experience of implementing a Spanish-language community-engag
