Assessments of social vulnerability on central nervous system cancer disparities in the United States.

BACKGROUND: Prior investigations of the impact of social determinants of health (SDH) on people with primary central nervous system cancers (PCNSC) have considered limited SDH-factors and pathologies. This study examines how the Social Vulnerability Index (SVI) influences disparities in outcome for people with PCNSC across the United States (US). METHODS: This population-based retrospective cohort study assessed adults with PCNSC between 1975-2017 from the Surveillance-Epidemiology-End Results database, categorized using the Central Brain-Tumor-Registry of the US (CBTRUS) classifications. SDH

Patterns of Residential Mobility by Social Vulnerability Among Individuals With Rheumatic and Musculoskeletal Conditions.

OBJECTIVE: Area-level factors such as neighborhood poverty affect the health of individuals with rheumatic conditions. The connection of area-level data with health data via electronic health records (EHR) often relies upon the most recent patient address. We investigated longitudinal address history to understand mobility to areas with differing degrees of social vulnerability. METHODS: We identified individuals with rheumatic or musculoskeletal conditions receiving rheumatology care in a multihospital health care organization (2019-2024) in this cohort study. We geocoded available addresses

Contemporary Outcomes in Chronic Limb-Threatening Ischemia: The Role of the Social Vulnerability Index.

BACKGROUND: Health disparities have been shown to influence the outcomes of vascular surgery interventions. This study aimed to analyze the association of the Social Vulnerability Index (SVI) with the outcomes of patients undergoing a lower extremity intervention for chronic limb-threatening ischemia (CLTI). METHODS: This is a retrospective cohort study. Between 2018 and 2023, all patients undergoing a primary intervention (bypass, BYP; endovascular interventions, EVs; or major amputation, AMP) for CLTI presenting with wound ischemia foot infection (WIfI) stages 1-5 were analyzed. Patients pr

Social Vulnerability and Pediatric EMS Behavioral Health Activations: Trends in Utilization and Sedation Practices.

OBJECTIVES: Despite the growing instances of pediatric patients presenting to emergency medical services (EMS) with a behavioral health emergency (BHE), these encounters remain an understudied phenomenon from a medical and social perspective. This study aims to characterize pediatric BHEs and to understand how social determinants of health impact BHE Frequency and sedation rates. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective observational analysis of the National Emergency Medical Services Information System (NEMSIS) database and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and Agency for Toxic Sub

Reduced reward responsiveness and depression vulnerability: Consideration of social contexts and implications for intervention.

Depression is a prevalent, heterogeneous, and debilitating disorder that often emerges in adolescence, and there is a need to better understand vulnerability processes to inform more targeted intervention efforts. Psychophysiological methods, like event-related potentials (ERPs), can offer unique insights into the cognitive and emotional processes underlying depression vulnerability. I review my and others' research examining ERP measures of reward responsiveness in youth depression and present a conceptual model of the development of low reward responsiveness, its role in depression vulnerabi

Dopamine Neuron Activity and Stress Signaling as Links Between Social Hierarchy and Psychopathology Vulnerability.

BACKGROUND: Social status in humans, generally reflected by socioeconomic status, has been associated, when constrained, with heightened vulnerability to pathologies including psychiatric diseases. Social hierarchy in mice translates into individual and interdependent behavioral strategies of animals within a group. The rules leading to the emergence of a social organization are elusive, and detangling the contribution of social status from other factors, whether environmental or genetic, to normal and pathological behaviors remains challenging. METHODS: We investigated the mechanisms shaping

Effects of diet quality on vulnerability to mild subchronic social defeat stress in mice.

OBJECTIVES: The chronic social defeat stress (CSDS) mouse model is a potentially useful system for understanding stress responses to social environments. We previously developed a mouse model of subchronic and mild social defeat stress (sCSDS) that exhibits increased body weight gain and food intake following polydipsia-like features. sCSDS mice also show avoidance behavior in a social interaction test. In this study, we examined the effects of diet quality on susceptibility to sCSDS by feeding these mice semi- and non-purified diets. METHODS: Male C57BL/6J (B6; n = 82) mice were exposed to s

Passive Social Media Use Is Associated with Social Withdrawal ("Hikikomori") Vulnerability in Autistic and Attention Deficit and Hyperactivity Disorder Young Adults.

Autism and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) are neurodevelopmental conditions associated with social communication differences and distinctive patterns of online engagement. Both conditions have been linked to increased risk of social withdrawal, yet little research has examined hikikomori vulnerability-a continuum of withdrawal-related tendencies-within a transdiagnostic digital context. This study investigated hikikomori vulnerability among UK-based young adults with autism or ADHD and examined how active and passive social media use and online gaming relate to withdrawal vuln

Social Contact Reinforces Cocaine Self-Administration in Young Adult Male Rats: The Role of Social Reinforcement in Vulnerability to Drug Use.

Drug-using peers are recognized as a leading factor influencing drug use among adolescents and young adults. One mechanism by which peers influence drug use is by providing social reinforcement for using drugs. Social reinforcement may be provided in multiple ways, including by making social contact contingent on drug use (i.e., an individual must use drugs to gain/maintain access to a peer). The purpose of this study was to develop a preclinical model in which intravenous cocaine self-administration was positively reinforced by access to a social partner. Young adult male rats were trained to

Development and validation of a social vulnerability index for use in Canadians living with multiple sclerosis.

BACKGROUND: Social factors influence the health outcomes of individuals with multiple sclerosis (MS). Social vulnerability indices (SVIs) can identify populations at risk of poor outcomes and inform targeted interventions, but no SVI has been developed for people with MS to date. OBJECTIVE: We developed a SVI, which aggregates several measures of social vulnerability into a composite, and assessed its performance. METHODS: We conducted a national, cross-sectional survey of people with MS in Canada from June 2025-March 2026. We selected social vulnerability factors across demographic, socioec

Screen Exposure and Childhood Adiposity in Socially Vulnerable Settings: Cross-Sectional Study.

BACKGROUND: Screen-based media use among children has been increasing, particularly in lower socioeconomic groups. As this behavior is linked to obesogenic habits, it is crucial to examine the associations between screen-based media use and adiposity in primary schoolchildren, particularly those from socially vulnerable contexts, such as children from the Educational Territories of Priority Intervention program. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to examine the associations between screen-based media use and adiposity in primary schoolchildren from socially vulnerable contexts. METHODS: This study,

Concurrent psychiatric, somatic, and social vulnerabilities in patients at increased cardiovascular risk in the Netherlands.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate clinical, psychiatric, demographic, and socioeconomic vulnerability in a Dutch primary care setting. METHODS: We included 34,392 patients aged 40-70 years who were registered for cardiovascular risk management in general practice before 2018. Latent class analysis was performed using 17 indicators across seven themes: somatic morbidity, adverse lifestyle, psychiatric, age, sex, ethnicity, and socioeconomic factors. We compared five-year risk of major adverse cardiovascular events using Fine-Gray competing risk models and assessed annual medical expenditures (2018-2022)

Canine seroepidemiology of Trypanosoma cruzi in socially vulnerable urban communities of Salvador, Brazil.

Chagas disease (CD), caused by Trypanosoma cruzi, remains a major neglected zoonosis in Latin America and represents persistent challenges in socially vulnerable urban settings. Domestic dogs are recognized as sensitive sentinels of environmental exposure to T. cruzi, yet data from urban communities remain limited. In this cross-sectional study, we investigated the seroprevalence of T. cruzi infection among dogs living in socially vulnerable urban communities on the periphery of Salvador, northeastern Brazil. Serum samples from 290 dogs were analyzed using indirect ELISA assays based on four c

The impact of social vulnerability on primary vaccine coverage in children with sickle cell disease.

INTRODUCTION: This study examines the relationship between social vulnerability and up-to-date (UTD) primary vaccine coverage among children with sickle cell disease (SCD). METHODS: This retrospective cohort study included children with SCD born in Georgia between 2008 and 2019, identified through the state newborn screening program. Immunization records were obtained from the state registry, and birth addresses were matched to census tract level Social Vulnerability Index (SVI) scores. Children were considered UTD if they completed the recommended vaccine doses by 24 months. Multivariable lo

Structural connectivity of grandiose versus vulnerable narcissism as models of social dominance and subordination.

Social dominance and subordination have been linked to fronto-limbic and fronto-thalamic networks and are related to phenotypes such as grandiose vs. vulnerable narcissistic traits. The latter have been linked to clinical features such as empathy and emotional regulation. In this study we tested the hypotheses that narcissistic traits are associated with white matter integrity in fasciculus uncinate, cingulum, and anterior thalamic radiation (ATR). We applied the Pathological Narcissism Inventory (PNI) to assess narcissistic traits in a sample of 267 psychiatrically healthy individuals. We use

Evidence of the Relationship between Social Vulnerability and the Spread of COVID-19 in Urban Spaces.

Modeling the social-spatial structure of urban spaces can facilitate the development of guidelines aimed at curbing the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic while also acting as an instrument that helps decision-making concerning mitigation policies. The modeling process starts with categorization of urban spaces based on the concept of social vulnerability. A model is created based on this concept and the theory of analysis of social areas. Statistical techniques of factor analysis and geostatistics are applied. This generates a map of social differentiation that, when related to data on the evolu

Social vulnerabilities as risk factor of childhood obesity development and their role in prevention programs.

INTRODUCTION: Large socioeconomic, gender, and ethnic inequalities exist in terms of childhood obesity worldwide. Children from low socioeconomic status families are more likely to have overweight/obesity and related cardiometabolic problems and future cancer risk. A wider concept are social vulnerabilities defined as social or economic characteristics or experiences negatively affecting children through behavioral, biological factors, or mental health. Social vulnerabilities include also therefore low subjective perceptions of social position. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to identify social vu

Sequential strategy for the LTBI screening of newly-arrived immigrants in vulnerable social situations.

INTRODUCTION: Some studies indicate high prevalences of latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI) in the immigrant population, which is relevant because 5-10% of cases will develop active tuberculosis. The objective of this study is to describe the results of a sequential strategy in the newly-arrived immigrant population for the diagnosis of LTBI using the tuberculin skin test (TST) and IGRAs. METHODS: A retrospective descriptive study was carried out with immigrants between 6 and 35years of age from shelters, referred to an international health unit between July 2013 and June 2016. The TST was p
