Establishment of an RI for the urine ammonia-to-creatinine ratio in dogs.

BACKGROUND: Ammonia is produced and excreted by the kidney, contributing to systemic acid-base homeostasis through the production of bicarbonate. Disorders of acid-base balance can lead to many clinical problems and measuring ammonia excretion helps in determining if the kidneys are responding to acid-base challenges appropriately. Reference intervals are integral to clinical decision-making, and there is no current RI for the urine ammonia-to-creatinine ratio (UACR) in dogs. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to generate an RI for the UACR in healthy adult dogs. METHODS: The study used adult, clie

Dog Population & Dog Sheltering Trends in the United States of America.

Dog management in the United States has evolved considerably over the last 40 years. This review analyzes available data from the last 30 to 40 years to identify national and local trends. In 1973, The Humane Society of the US (The HSUS) estimated that about 13.5 million animals (64 dogs and cats per 1000 people) were euthanized in the US (about 20% of the pet population) and about 25% of the dog population was still roaming the streets. Intake and euthanasia numbers (national and state level) declined rapidly in the 1970s due to a number of factors, including the implementation of shelter ste

COMPARISON OF ALLIGATOR SNAPPING TURTLE ( MACROCHELYS TEMMINCKII) PLASMA BIOCHEMICAL PROFILES FROM TWO CLINICAL ANALYZERS.

The interpretation of plasma biochemical profiles can be confounded by the methodologies by which samples are analyzed. The goal of this study was to compare agreement between two biochemical analyzers for plasma samples from alligator snapping turtles ( Macrochelys temminckii). Blood was obtained from the dorsal coccygeal vein of captive-reared, juvenile turtles ( n = 34), stored in lithium heparin tubes, and centrifuged to separate plasma from whole blood. Plasma samples were stored at 5°C prior to and in between analyses on VetScan (VetScan2, Abaxis, Union City, CA 94587, USA) and Olympus (

The Role of Comparative Pathology in the Investigation of Zoonoses.

Emerging and re-emerging zoonoses have raised great concerns in both human and animal health worldwide in the past 20 years. Rudolph Virchow proposed a "one medicine" discipline and emphasized the importance of cooperation 150 years ago. In the face of emerging threats from unpredictable zoonoses, human medicine and veterinary medicine should not be separate and independent sciences. Anatomic pathologists who are capable of analyzing and interpreting anatomical manifestations of diseases to obtain a definite diagnosis or exclude a wide variety of diseases play an important role in the diagnost

THE ROLE OF LIVE BIRD MARKETS SHOULD BE EMPHASIZED IN PREVENTING THE SPREAD OF HIGHLY PATHOGENIC AVIAN INFLUENZA INFECTIONS.

Zoonotic diseases refer to infectious diseases caused by pathogens that infect or parasitize both humans and other vertebrate animals. In recent years, the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) has been known to be a zoonotic disease. Academic fields related to zoonotic diseases include veterinary medicine and virology. According to a report by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), approximately 70% of new human infectious diseases identified since 1940 are of animal origin. On the other hand, approximately twice as many pathogens are transmitted from humans to anim

2022 ISFM Consensus Guidelines on the Management of Acute Pain in Cats.

PRACTICAL RELEVANCE: Increases in cat ownership worldwide mean more cats are requiring veterinary care. Illness, trauma and surgery can result in acute pain, and effective management of pain is required for optimal feline welfare (ie, physical health and mental wellbeing). Validated pain assessment tools are available and pain management plans for the individual patient should incorporate pharmacological and non-pharmacological therapy. Preventive and multimodal analgesia, including local anaesthesia, are important principles of pain management, and the choice of analgesic drugs should take in

Hematologic and biochemical reference intervals in Shetland Sheepdogs.

BACKGROUND: Several breeds have physiological peculiarities that induce variations in reference intervals (RIs) compared with the general canine population. Shetland sheepdogs (SSs) are reported to be more predisposed to different diseases (eg, hyperlipidemia, gallbladder mucocele, and hypothyroidism). Consequently, a breed-specific approach is more often required. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to determine whether the RIs of the general canine population could be applied to that of SSs, and to generate breed-specific RIs, where appropriate. METHODS: Sixty clinically healthy and fast

Attributes, knowledge, beliefs, and behaviors relating to prevention of heartworm in dogs among members of a national hunting dog club.

The Food and Drug Administration Center for Veterinary Medicine (FDA/CVM) has cited an increasing number of reports of failure of heartworm prophylaxis in dogs. Failures may be due to resistance of L(3)-L(4) stage Dirofilaria immitis to the macrocyclic lactone class of compounds used for prophylaxis, lack of compliance with and understanding of administration of prophylactics, individual differences in drug absorption or metabolism, or a combination of these factors. Using the latest scientific information, the American Heartworm Society (AHS) and Companion Animal Parasite Council (CAPC) have
