Predictive value of a preoperative computed tomography-derived perifracture soft-tissue envelope index for fracture-related infection after open reduction and internal fixation of tibial plateau fractures.

BACKGROUND: Fracture-related infection (FRI) is a major complication after open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) of tibial plateau fractures. This study evaluated whether a preoperative computed tomography (CT)-derived soft-tissue envelope index (STEI) was associated with 12-month FRI and whether it provided incremental value for preoperative risk stratification. METHODS: This retrospective single-center cohort study included 347 adults with unilateral closed tibial plateau fractures who underwent ORIF between January 2020 and December 2024. The STEI was defined as the mean ratio of sof

Assessing target localization accuracy across different soft-tissue matching protocols using end-exhalation breath-hold cone-beam computed tomography in patients with pancreatic cancer.

The purpose of this study was to retrospectively assess target localization accuracy across different soft-tissue matching protocols using cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) in a large sample of patients with pancreatic cancer and to estimate the optimal margin size for each protocol. Fifty-four consecutive patients with pancreatic cancer who underwent 15-fraction volumetric modulated arc therapy under the end-exhalation breath-hold condition were enrolled. Two soft-tissue matching protocols were used according to the resectability classification, including gross tumor volume (GTV) matching

Independent changes in bone mineralized and marrow soft tissues following acute knee injury require dual-energy or high-resolution computed tomography for accurate assessment of bone mineral density and stiffness.

Musculoskeletal injuries often induce local accumulation of blood and/or fluid within the bone marrow, which is detected on medical imaging as edema-like marrow signal intensities (EMSI). In addition to its biological effects on post-injury recovery, the displacement of low-attenuating, largely adipocytic marrow by EMSI may introduce errors into quantitative computed tomography (QCT) measurements of bone mineral density (vBMD) and resulting bone stiffness estimates from image-based finite element (FE) analysis. We aimed to investigate the impact of post-injury changes in marrow soft tissue com

Convergence of Soft Electronics and Artificial Intelligence: From Materials to Intelligent Systems.

Soft electronics are an emerging class of mechanically compliant platforms that enable conformal, skin-interfaced sensing and actuation on curvilinear and dynamic surfaces. These systems combine deformation-tolerant electrical functionality with soft contact mechanics, but their in-use performance is strongly influenced by time-varying interfaces, motion-induced artifacts, and the system burden associated with dense multimodal integration. Advances in soft electronics are now converging with artificial intelligence, which supports reliable information extraction from high-dimensional signals a

Modeling regional mean sea level based on climate measurements using a stacked ensemble approach.

Assessing changes in mean sea level (MSL) has become increasingly critical due to the significance of climate changes. Soft computing techniques are now widely used to reduce the time and cost associated with traditional MSL estimation methods. Historical MSL data is frequently used to predict future values, yet the application of soft computing models to analyze climate change's impact on MSL remains relatively unexplored. This study aims to develop and compare various soft computing techniques for modeling MSL fluctuations using meteorological data. Random forest (RF), support vector regress…

Echo State Networks for Estimating Exteroceptive Conditions From Proprioceptive States in Quadruped Robots.

We propose a methodology based on reservoir computing for mapping local proprioceptive information acquired at the level of the leg joints of a simulated quadruped robot into exteroceptive and global information, including both the ground reaction forces at the level of the different legs and information about the type of terrain traversed by the robot. Both dynamic estimation and terrain classification can be achieved concurrently with the same reservoir computing structure, which serves as a soft sensor device. Simulation results are presented together with preliminary experiments on a real

Mapping Boolean logic with protein-based colloids: A microelectrode array (MEA) approach.

Neuromorphic and unconventional computing aim to replicate the adaptive, parallel, and energy-efficient information processing of biological systems. Achieving this functionality with sustainable, biocompatible materials remains a key challenge. Here, we demonstrate a protein-based colloidal computing platform using egg albumen interfaced with a microelectrode array (MEA) that simultaneously exhibits memory-like behaviours and synaptic-like potentiation and depression. Here, we demonstrate that these properties can be used to perform a wide range of Boolean operations that are spatially distri

Resolving Thermal Accumulation and Rigid-Soft Interface Mismatch in Stretchable Electronics with Cubic Boron Nitride Composite Islands.

Integrated stretchable electronic systems for soft robotics and wearable devices require effective thermal management to mitigate heat accumulation around functional components. Here, we propose an island-bridge architecture with localized thermally conductive composite islands for enhanced heat dissipation. By incorporating cubic boron nitride (c-BN) into selected regions of the soft substrate, we construct thermally conductive composite islands with in-plane and through-plane thermal conductivities of 2.327 and 2.596 Wm1-K-1, respectively. Compared with the substrate without composite island

Integrating NLP and Ensemble Learning into Next-Generation Firewalls for Robust Malware Detection in Edge Computing.

As edge computing becomes increasingly central to modern digital infrastructure, it also creates opportunities for sophisticated malware attacks that traditional security systems struggle to address. This study proposes a natural language processing (NLP) framework integrated with ensemble learning into next-generation firewalls (NGFWs) to detect and mitigate malware attacks in edge computing environments. The approach leverages unstructured threat intelligence (e.g., cybersecurity reports, logs) by applying NLP techniques, such as TF-IDF vectorization, to convert textual data into structured

Intelligent computing and sensitivity analysis of unsteady darcy-forchheimer nanofluid flow over an inclined permeable disk subject to thompson-troian slip conditions.

The present study numerically investigates the unsteady three-dimensional electromagnetohydrodynamic (EMHD) flow of a dual-fractional nanofluid (DFNF) comprising cobalt ferrite (CoFe2O4) and water flowing over an inclined porous rotating disk (PRD) using a combination of numerical simulation and soft computing techniques. Both the velocity slip and the thermal convective boundary conditions are complex non-linear. Time-dependent similarity transformations are applied to the governing partial differential equations to convert them to a system of coupled ordinary differential equations, and then…

Contribution of soft lenses of various powers to the optics of a piggy-back system on regular corneas.

PURPOSE: This study aims to report on the measured in vivo contribution of soft lenses of various powers to the optics of a piggyback system (PBS). METHODS: This prospective, non-dispensing clinical study was conducted on regular wearers of contact lenses who showed regular corneal profiles. Subjects were masked to the products used. The study involved the use of a spherical soft lens of three different powers in a PBS, used as a carrier for a rigid gas permeable lens. Baseline data were collected and soft lenses were then fitted on both eyes of each subject. Both lenses were assessed for pos

Programmable Metamaterials with Perforated Shell Group Supporting Versatile Information Processing.

Mechanical metamaterials have emerged as promising tools for enabling mechanical intelligence in soft machines through interaction with the external environment. Note that most representative results in the literature focused on certain features of information processing with the designs of novel metamaterials. It remains challenging to design metamaterials with more integrated information processing capabilities toward comprehensive intelligence. In this work, a novel approach employing programmable multi-stability of perforated shells (PS) with staggered trapezoidal voids is proposed to deve

Bi-Chiral Nanostructures Featuring Dynamic Optical Rotatory Dispersion for Polychromatic Light Multiplexing.

Chiral nanostructures featuring the unique optical activity have attracted broad interests from scientists. The typical polarization rotation of transmitted light is usually wavelength dependent, namely the optical rotatory dispersion. However, its dynamic tunability and intriguing collaboration with other optical degrees of freedom, especially the highly desired spatial phase, remain elusive. Herein, a bi-chiral liquid crystalline nanostructure is proposed to induce an effect called reflective optical rotatory dispersion. Thanks to the independent manipulation of opposite-handed self-assemble

Three-dimensional virtual planning in orthognathic surgery enhances the accuracy of soft tissue prediction.

INTRODUCTION: Throughout the history of computing, shortening the gap between the physical and digital world behind the screen has always been strived for. Recent advances in three-dimensional (3D) virtual surgery programs have reduced this gap significantly. Although 3D assisted surgery is now widely available for orthognathic surgery, one might still argue whether a 3D virtual planning approach is a better alternative to a conventional two-dimensional (2D) planning technique. The purpose of this study was to compare the accuracy of a traditional 2D technique and a 3D computer-aided predictio

Craniofacial reconstruction as a prediction problem using a Latent Root Regression model.

In this paper, we present a computer-assisted method for facial reconstruction. This method provides an estimation of the facial shape associated with unidentified skeletal remains. Current computer-assisted methods using a statistical framework rely on a common set of extracted points located on the bone and soft-tissue surfaces. Most of the facial reconstruction methods then consist of predicting the position of the soft-tissue surface points, when the positions of the bone surface points are known. We propose to use Latent Root Regression for prediction. The results obtained are then compar
