Materials made with chromite ore are widely applied in the industry metallurgy as well as in the foundry industry. The oxidation number of chromium in these materials is both (III) and (VI). Deep-sea teleost fish were collected from the Sagami Bay near a deep fissure in the Pacific Ocean. Fish were identified as Chlorophthalmis albatrosis, Engyprosopan xystrias, Satyrichthys hians, Ventrifossa garmani, and Halieutaea stellata. A simple, rapid and reliable method was developed for the determination of total mercury in biological samples. Samples were solubilized using tetramethylammonium hydroxide (TMAH). The organically bound mercury was cleaved and converted to inorganic mercury by on-line addition of KMnO4. The physical-chemical properties of a new Iron-Protein complex, the so called "Iron Yeast" biotecnologically produced by Saccharomyces cerevisiae cell cultures, are reported. Using atomic absorption methods the amount of free iron in the complex has been evaluated, ascertaining that 99% of Iron is structurally bound to the protein matrix. Iron Yeast is a further, original contribution to the treatment of iron-deficiency anemias, showing a satisfactory clinical activity and a lower amount of undesired side effects in comparison with other Iron-Protein complexes.

Manganese has been proven to be an essential trace element in animals since 1931. A method is proposed which gives an idea of the type of the absorption spectra of the total porphyrines in the urine without requiring its recording. A single portion of 0,2 ml of urine is mixed with 1,8 ml of IM HCL. The extinctions at 380, 401, 405 and 430 nm are read. The doubled real extinctions (2RE) at 401 and 405 are calculated by the formulae 2RE401--(E380 + E430) and 2E405--(E380 + E430). The extinctions at 380 and 430 outline the "background" of substances which are not porphyrines. When using Spekol 10 the results are multiplied by 1,6 and for Spekol II--they are multiplied by 1,4.

The concentration of 25 major, minor and trace elements in human bile was determined by inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry. Gallbladder bile was obtained during surgery from patients with cholesterol gallstones, pigment stones and with no biliary tract abnormalities (controls). Comparison of the concentration of elements (microgram per gram of solids) did not reveal any significant differences among the three patient groups. The in vitro nucleation time was not related to the concentration of any element measured.

Ninety-six untreated patients with malignant lymphoma (ML), 81 Hodgkin's disease, and 15 Burkitt's lymphoma were studied for zinc (Zn) status, and 21 patients also had selenium (Se) status analysis. Plasma and hair Zn and Se levels were measured by atomic absorption spectrophotometry. Chronic Zn and Se deficiencies (low plasma and low hair Zn and Se levels together) were found to be associated with ML in Turkish children. The efficacy of Tiron and calcium disodium EDTA in the treatment of experimental beryllium intoxication was investigated in rats. The contents of the metals Ca, Mg, Zn, Cu, Cr, and Mn in 7 different entities of tumors of the sellar region were evaluated by atomic absorption spectrophotometry. Increased values of Mg in coincidence with high Ca contents are explained by the competition of Mg to Ca and its potency to inhibit mineralization. Although breast-feeding in renal transplant patients has been discouraged because of the potential risk to the infant from the immunosuppressive drugs, two of our patients chose to breast-feed their infants for 3-4 months period. Thirty-four patients suspected of being magnesium deficient were given intravenous infusions of potassium and magnesium.
