Relationship of thoracic kyphosis and lumbar lordosis to bone mineral density in women.

UNLABELLED: The relationship between spinal curvature and bone mineral density (BMD) in women was examined. Significant relationships were observed between spinal curvature and BMD in both pre- and postmenopausal women. Excessive spinal curvature may be associated with low bone mass in premenopausal women. INTRODUCTION: The purpose of this study was to examine the associations between spinal measurements of thoracic and lumbar curvatures and bone mineral density in pre- and postmenopausal women. METHODS: The data for this study were obtained from the Texas Woman's University Pioneer Project.

The posterior surface of the lumbar vertebral bodies. Part 2: An anatomic investigation concerning the curvatures in the horizontal plane.

The horizontal curvatures of the posterior surfaces of the lumbar vertebral bodies have been quantitatively evaluated by means of a simple measuring device. The measurements have been done near the superior and inferior vertebral margins. The aims of the study were: to obtain exact information on the degrees of curvatures and their interindividual variations and further compare the information obtained with current knowledge of the relevant embryologic and mechanical factors involved to explain the curvatures and to use the results as a basis for a theory on the development of some of the form

The impact of altering participant MRI scanning position on back muscle volume measurements.

OBJECTIVES: Muscle volume may reflect both strength and functional capability and hence is a parameter often measured to assess the effect of various interventions. The aim of the current study was to determine the sensitivity of muscle volume calculations on participant postural position and hence gauge possible errors that may arise in longitudinal studies, especially those where an intervention leads to large muscle changes and potentially the degree of spinal curvature. METHODS: Twenty healthy participants (22-49 years, 10 male and 10 female), were recruited and MRI images acquired with t

Neuroimaging of scoliosis in childhood.

A curvature abnormality may be the initial or major presenting feature in a child with disease of the spinal column or spinal neuraxis. A simplified classification of common spinal curvature abnormalities of childhood include idiopathic, congenital/dysraphic, skeletal dysplasia, neurofibromatosis, and painful. The great majority of childhood scoliosis falls into the idiopathic category. Atypical clinical or radiographic features in a presumed idiopathic scoliosis may indicate an otherwise occult tumor or hydrosyringomyelia, or may be a consequence of increasing curvature with disk protrusion,

The effect of swimming on the body posture, range of motion and musculoskeletal pain in elite para and able-bodied swimmers.

BACKGROUND: Elite swimmers may be predisposed to disturbances in the range of motion (ROM) of hip joints and spinal curvatures, which are a factor that induces body's compensatory mechanisms that may have an impact on sports training, athletic performance and health. This study aimed to identify compensatory mechanisms in body posture of elite Para and able-bodied swimmers (spinal curvatures, ROM), to indicate the dominant locations of the compensatory mechanisms in the groups of Para and able-bodied athletes, and to identify and compare the prevalence and location of musculoskeletal pain from…

The axonemal dynein heavy chain 10 gene is essential for monocilia motility and spine alignment in zebrafish.

Adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) is a common pediatric musculoskeletal disorder worldwide, characterized by atypical spine curvatures in otherwise healthy children. Human genetic studies have identified candidate genes associated with AIS, however, only a few of these have been shown to recapitulate adult-viable scoliosis in animal models. Using an F0 CRISPR screening approach in zebrafish, we demonstrate that disruption of the dynein axonemal heavy chain 10 (dnah10) gene results in recessive adult-viable scoliosis in zebrafish. Using a stably segregating dnah10 mutant zebrafish, we showe

Posterior Decompression and Fusion: Whole-Spine Functional and Clinical Outcomes.

The mobility of the spine and the change in the angle of the curvatures are directly related to spinal pain and spinal stenosis. The aim of the study was the evaluation of morphology and mobility of the spine in patients who were subjected to decompression and posterior fusion with pedicle screws. The treatment group consisted of 20 patients who underwent posterior fixation of lumbar spine (one and two level fusion). The control group consisted of 39 healthy subjects. Mobility and curvatures of the spine were measured with a non-invasive device, the Spinal Mouse. Pain was evaluated with the Vi

Use of Supplemental Rod Constructs in Adult Spinal Deformity Surgery: A Review.

Adult spinal deformity comprises a heterogeneous group of disorders that primarily affects older patients and can have a significant negative affect on health-related quality of life. Operative treatment for adult spinal deformity typically entails posterior instrumented fusions that have demonstrated the potential to significantly improve health-related quality of life outcomes. However, until fusion is achieved, the instrumentation providing structural support is subject to repetitive cyclical loading that disproportionately fatigues high-stress areas and can result in instrumentation failur

Comparison of long fusion terminating at L5 versus the sacrum in treating adult spinal deformity: a meta-analysis.

PURPOSE: Choosing an optimal distal fusion level for adult spinal deformity (ASD) is still controversial. To compare the radiographic and clinical outcomes of distal fusion to L5 versus the sacrum in ASD, we conducted a meta-analysis. METHODS: Relevant studies on long fusion terminating at L5 or the sacrum in ASD were retrieved from the PubMed, Embase, Cochrane, and Google Scholar databases. Then, studies were manually selected for inclusion based on predefined criteria. The meta-analysis was performed by RevMan 5.3. RESULTS: Eleven retrospective studies with 1211 patients were included in m

Pathophysiological Concepts and Treatment of Camptocormia.

Camptocormia is a disabling pathological, non-fixed, forward bending of the trunk. The clinical definition using only the bending angle is insufficient; it should include the subjectively perceived inability to stand upright, occurrence of back pain, typical individual complaints, and need for walking aids and compensatory signs (e.g. back-swept wing sign). Due to the heterogeneous etiologies of camptocormia a broad diagnostic approach is necessary. Camptocormia is most frequently encountered in movement disorders (PD and dystonia) and muscles diseases (myositis and myopathy, mainly facio-scap

Template guided versus freehand rod bending in spinal deformity surgery: a feasibility study.

Spinal deformity correction relies on osteotomies and precisely contoured rods, which are critical for restoring sagittal alignment. Inaccurate rod bending may compromise alignment and increase the risk of junctional failure. This feasibility study compares the accuracy of template-guided versus freehand rod contouring in a simulated environment. Using SurgiMap® software, 12 double-curved rods were designed from full-spine radiographs. Six surgeons from a tertiary spine centre bent rods freehand or using 2D paper templates. Two rod specifications were tested: ⌀4.0 mm stainless steel rods for c

Camptocormia in Parkinson's disease: state of the art and future directions.

Camptocormia is a frequent axial postural deformity in Parkinson's disease (PD) that is prevalent in up to 18% in the PD population. Camptocormic PD patients have a lower quality of life and higher risks of falls, back pain and spondylarthrosis. Camptocormia is probably induced by brain changes caused by PD. Despite the myopathic changes in camptocormic PD patients' spine muscles and camptocormia's clinical similarity with dystonic postures, its pathophysiology seems to be different from myopathy and dystonia. The exact pathogenesis is however unclear. There is no consensus for treatment of PD
