Family violence and Asian drinkers.

This is a study of 70 consecutive referrals to the Department of Psychological Medicine, National University Hospital, for treatment of drinking problems. There were 31 Chinese and 39 Indian drinkers, with 63 males and 7 females. Family violence with physical abuse occurred in 21 cases (30%). One of three wives of drinkers had been physically abused, but no children were victims. Drinkers with family violence were generally younger and more severely dependent on alcohol than the non-violent drinkers. There was no relationship between family violence and the ethnicity or marital status of the d

Intimate partner violence and help-seeking: The role of femicide news.

Exploiting high-frequency data from the Italian anti-violence helpline, police reports of domestic abuse and maltreatments, and a unique geolocalized dataset on killings of women, we show that the news coverage of a femicide triggers an increase in help-seeking behavior. The effect is detectable in the period following the news and in the province where the femicide has occurred. Additionally, help-seeking increases more when the general interest and news coverage are higher. These findings are consistent with a model in which femicide news increase expectations about future intimate partner v

Physical violence during the 12 months preceding childbirth--Alaska, Maine, Oklahoma, and West Virginia, 1990-1991.

In addition to clearly defined health risks that develop during pregnancy (e.g., toxemia and diabetes), pregnant women are at risk for physical violence inflicted by intimate partners. Although estimates in public and private health-care settings indicate that 4%-17% of women experience violence during pregnancy, population-based prevalence estimates of this problem have not been available. This report uses 1990 and 1991 data from the Pregnancy Risk Assessment Monitoring System (PRAMS) in Alaska, Maine, Oklahoma, and West Virginia to assess the prevalence of physical violence against women dur

Psychological abuse among college women in dating relationships.

A questionnaire designed to measure psychological abuse and kindness was responded to by 90 college women involved in dating relationships. Analysis indicated that, while many relationships were low abuse/high kindness, a substantial number were characterized by high abuse/low kindness, high abuse/high kindness and low abuse/low kindness. An analysis of these different categories of dating relationships as well as explanations as to why young women should be in such negative relationships are included. The study also indicated significant differences between women's reports of feelings and beh

Assertiveness deficits and hostility in domestically violent men.

Two types of assertiveness, the ability to refuse a demand or request and the ability to initiate a request or affirmatively express a need, were examined in a clinical sample of domestically violent men (N = 78) in contrast to a nonviolent comparison group (N = 29). No significant difference was found between the groups on refusal behavior. However, a significant difference was found on initiating/request behavior, the violent men evidencing lower scores than their nonviolent counterparts. Significant differences in anger and hostility were also apparent between groups. There was a significan

[Facing Children Suffering From Physical Abuse: The Decision-Making Process of Non-Abusing Caregivers].

BACKGROUND: Physical abuse is the most common type of child maltreatment reported in Taiwan. The action of non-abusing caregivers is key to ending this maltreatment and to preventing future victimization in the home. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to explore the decision-making process used by non-abusing caregivers to take action after finding that children under their care were being physically abused at home. METHODS: A qualitative descriptive approach was adopted and purposive, snowball sampling was used to recruit 11 non-abusing caregivers of children less than 18 years of age w

Separation/divorce sexual assault in rural Ohio: survivors' perceptions.

Since the 1970s, many studies have enhanced a social scientific understanding of the lethal and non-lethal physical abuse of women during and after separation and divorce, but less than a handful have examined sexual assaults on rural women who want to leave, are trying to leave, or who have left spouses or live-in male partners. Further, none of the work done so far on this problem has examined the role of collective efficacy. The results presented here help fill these research gaps and call into question the common assumption that there is more collective control on criminal behavior in rura

Spousal abuse/homicide. A current issue in health risk management.

Domestic homicides shocked Calgary in 1995. As the year drew to a close, statistics revealed that 5 of the city's 18 murders were at the hands of an abusive spouse, former spouse, or boyfriend. This prompted women across the city to campaign for more protection for women. Press conferences were held in which Calgary's most prominent women's groups called for tougher action against violent offenders. With 1996 over the halfway mark, one case of spousal homicide has occurred. Although statistics are down from this time last year, it is an event that should not have occurred. Although public awar

Spouses of male psychiatric patients are more prone to intimate partner violence.

Intimate partner violence (IPV) is a great public health concern. Most studies have evaluated different risk factors of IPV in general population, but few have evaluated the perpetration of IPV by subjects with psychological disease. We evaluated the prevalence of IPV among spouses of men with psychiatric disease. In this descriptive study, we questioned 119 women whose husbands were in-patient or out-patients of psychology clinic. A validated questionnaire was used for evaluation IPV and its different subtypes. All women reported to encounter some kind of IPV in some periods. Women reported e

The relationship between dementia and elder abuse.

OBJECTIVE: Alzheimer's disease and other dementias may be associated with greater risk for physical abuse than other illnesses of the elderly. The authors examined the relationship between dementia and abusive behavior in a group of demented patients and their caregivers. METHOD: An anonymous questionnaire was distributed to 1,000 caregivers who called a telephone help line specializing in dementia. Demographic characteristics of patients and caregivers were assessed, the occurrence of abuse was examined, and caregivers completed the Zarit Burden Interview and the Zung Self-Rating Depression

Engaging fathers to strengthen the impact of early home visitation on physical child abuse risk: Findings from the dads matter-HV randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Despite growing recognition of the importance of fathers in child abuse risk, the field of perinatal home visitation has only begun to consider fathers' roles in the implementation of such services. OBJECTIVES: This study examines the effectiveness of Dads Matter-HV ("DM-HV"), a father-inclusion enhancement to home visitation, and hypothesized mediators of impact. METHODS: A multisite cluster randomized controlled trial was conducted with 17 home visiting program teams serving 204 families across study conditions. Program supervisors and their teams were randomized to deliver hom

Strain, self-control, and spousal violence: a study of husband-to-wife violence in Hong Kong.

This study examines the applicability of Agnew's strain theory and Gottfredson and Hirschi's self-control theory in explaining husband-to-wife psychological aggression and physical assault in a community survey of 871 couples in Hong Kong. Three strains, each belonging to 1 type of Agnew's types of strain, were selected, namely, dissatisfaction with family financial situation, dissatisfaction with relationship with spouse, and physical abuse by parents in childhood. Self-control was measured with a simplified version of 12 items selected from the 24-item Self-control Scale developed by Grasmic

METHODS: The CABS-PA text was translated into Japanese, then back translated. The appropriaten
