BACKGROUND: Acute rupture of the fibular ligament complex is one of the commonest injuries in sports. Prospective randomized trials in the 1980s led to a paradigm shift from primary surgical repair to conservative functional treatment.
METHODS: This review is based on publications retrieved by a selective search in PubMed, Embase, and the Cochrane Library for randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and meta-analyses on surgical versus conservative treatment from the years 1983 to 2023.
RESULTS: 10 of 11 prospective randomized trials of surgical versus conservative treatment conducted between 198

This article reviews hazards associated with obstacle course events (OCEs) like the Spartan Race and Tough Mudder, which are becoming increasingly popular, and provides strategies to mitigate these hazards. In seven studies, the overall weighted incidence of participants seeking medical care during OCEs was only 1.4% with ~6% of these requiring higher level medical care at a hospital. Nonetheless, 27% of participants self-reported =1 extremity injury. Common OCE medical problems included sprains/strains and dermatological injuries (abrasions/laceration/blisters); the ankle and knee were common

CONTEXT: Given the frequency of ankle sprains, especially in the athletic population, prevention is a primary task of athletic trainers and other sports health care professionals.
OBJECTIVE: To discuss the current evidence as it relates to prophylactic programs for the prevention of ankle sprains and to provide critical interpretation of the evidence supporting and refuting the implementation of preventive programs.
CONCLUSIONS: External prophylactic supports and preventive exercise programs are effective for reducing the risk of ankle sprains in both uninjured and previously injured populat

BACKGROUND: Ankle bracing has been verified as being effective for secondary prevention of ankle injuries. However, new studies have recently been published that are not included in previous meta-analyses. Furthermore, the effects of bracing for primary prevention of ankle injuries are still unclear.
OBJECTIVE: The objective of this article was to systematically review the literature about the effectiveness of ankle bracing on primary and secondary prevention of acute ankle injuries in athletes.
METHODS: We searched PubMed, EMBASE, SPORTDiscus, CINAHL, and PEDro databases for eligible articl

Ankle sprains are common in team sports and sports played on courts, and often result in structural and functional alterations that lead to a greater reinjury risk. Specific exercises are often used to promote neuromuscular improvements in the prevention and rehabilitation of ankle injuries. This literature review summarizes the neuromuscular characteristics of common ankle sprains and the effectiveness of exercise as an intervention for improving neuromuscular function and preventing reinjury. Our review found that appropriate exercise prescription can increase static and dynamic balance and

This study was designed to detect the first evidence of injury to muscle induced by passive stretching. Rabbit extensor digitorum longus and tibialis anterior skeletal muscles were subjected to passive stretching at set force levels of 20% or 30% of load to failure. Both tibialis anterior and extensor digitorum longus muscles that were stretched to 30% exhibited no difference in the three tensile parameters when compared with their contralateral control specimens. Maximum contractile force was decreased after stretching. Tibialis anterior and extensor digitorum muscles that were stretched to 2

Neck sprain is characterised by 'soft tissue' lesions in the cervical discs, synovial joints, muscles and sometimes the nerve roots. Peripheral nociception in the outer annulus, joint capsules, muscles, meninges, arteries and nerves can cause neck pain, with headache, or upper torso and upper limb pain. Careful physical examination, or accurately placed local anaesthetic injections, may localise the sources of pain.
