OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the sagittal tomographic reformatting of the sternum using unpublished radiographic parameters (indexes and angles), comparing them between the different types of pectus, and controls.
METHODS: 44 patients with pectus deformities and controls underwent chest CT for analysis. The types of pectus were classified into: inferior pectus carinatum (IPC), superior (SPC) and lateral (LPC), and broad (BPE) and localized pectus excavatum (LPE). The following tomographic parameters were created and measured: (1) spine-manubrium-sternum index (SMS); (2) column-sternum index (CSI); …

OBJECTIVES: Mediastinitis and sternum dehiscence are serious complications after open heart surgery, causing an increase in hospital stay, utilization of health care resources, and mortality. The defect that results after sternal wound debridement frequently necessitates tissue-flap coverage, for which pectoralis major transposition currently is the preferred method. In this study, the postoperative outcome and individual characteristics of patients undergoing pectoralis major transposition were analyzed to identify predictors of complications after wound closure.
METHODS: A retrospective cha…

A sternal cleft is a rare congenital and developmental disorder. In general, this disorder is associated with skeletal and extraskeletal abnormalities (eg, Cantrell syndrome), but isolated sternal clefts have also been reported. A sternal cleft with pectus excavatum is a rare congenital abnormality. We present a complete sternal cleft with right-sided clavicular hypoplasia and pectus excavatum in a 31-year-old female patient.

Cleft sternum is a rare congenital chest deformity that develops during the first trimester. Failure of the process of midline mesenchymal strip fusion leads to absence of the sternum, resulting in cleft formation. Multiple surgical approaches have been described in the closure of sternal clefts. An optimal surgical approach is still debatable. We describe 2 cases of complete sternal clefting treated with staging of the repair. Dermal allograft and synthetic mesh along with myofasciocutaneous flaps are used a bridging method to future definitive treatment. Most patients will require secondary …

Sternal clefting is an unusual congenital anomaly that should be repaired in early infancy. Early surgery is facilitated by a highly compliant bony thorax. The surgical technique is described, including the (1) removal of a wedge at the confluence of the two lateral sternal bands to allow their apposition, (2) intraoperative assessment of pulmonary compliance and central venous pressure, (3) use of bilateral pectoral flaps, and (4) resulting avoidance of major costochondral stair-step osteotomies. The suggested age of repair is 1 to 4 weeks of age.

BACKGROUND: Sternum fractures are relatively uncommon injuries, which generally occur as a result of a high-energy mechanism and are often associated with significant concomitant injuries. These injuries may result in decreased quality of life if not properly addressed and yet are rarely operated on. The purpose of this project is to evaluate high-energy sternum fracture patterns using a previously published three-dimensional (3D) computed tomography (CT) reconstruction process to produce fracture frequency maps.
METHODS: Patients 18 years and older presenting to a Level I trauma center with …

OBJECTIVE: The design and development of split memory alloy sternum bone plate are discussed, and the effect of split memory alloy sternum bone plate internal fixation in the treatment of sternal fractures are analysed.
METHODS: The structure of the product is designed according to the anatomy and physiological characteristics of human bones, and the cross section shape of the product is designed according to the cross section shape of human bones. Internal fixation is effective in the treatment of sternal fracture.
RESULTS: The split memory alloy sternal plate was successfully designed and …

CASE: A 29-year-old man presented with a displaced medial clavicle fracture. Surgical repair was performed using a precontoured plate designed for the contralateral distal clavicle, and medial fixation was accomplished at the sternum. The patient had no complications and demonstrated full strength and range of motion at the 8-month follow-up.
CONCLUSION: Medial clavicle fractures with a small medial fragment can be immobilized using a plate designed for the contralateral distal clavicle that crosses the sternoclavicular joint to obtain medial fixation in the sternum. This technique may provid…

The authors present their special surgical treatment by telling the medical history of one of their patients. Cessation of sternum protrusio was achieved by a "H" shape resection of the anterior cortical plate of the sternum.

A 63-year-old patient was admitted with a sternal fracture and mass. On evaluation, most of the body of the sternum had been destroyed by a tumor. Radical resection of the sternum was performed and part of the major pectoral muscles adherent to the sternal tumor was also resected. The chest wall defect was reconstructed with mesh, bone cement, and a titanium rib plate system. Reconstruction with this method seemed to be an appropriate procedure to prevent instability of the chest wall.

An 86-year-old man fell from a farm trolley and presented with chest bruising. Chest computed tomography showed a hemopneumothorax, multiple right rib fractures, and a sternal fracture at the sternal angle. Although he was treated with a chest tube for drainage and external fixation, a flail chest and severe pain continued. We performed a locked plate fixation of the sternal fracture on the 6th day of hospitalization. The postoperative course was favorable and the patient's flail chest improved. In cases of fracture of the sternum, minimally invasive locked plate sternal fixation may lead to e…
