Biomechanical cyclic loading test of a synthetic ligament fixation system used for intra-articular stabilization of deficient canine stifles.

BACKGROUND: Cranial cruciate ligament rupture (CCLr) is the most common cause of hind limb lameness in dogs. Currently, surgical management of CCLr is mostly performed using tibial osteotomy techniques to modify the biomechanical conformation of the affected stifle. These surgical techniques have a significant complication rate, associated with persistent instability of the stifle which may lead to chronic postoperative pain. Over the last decade, studies have been published on various techniques of anatomical caudal cruciate ligament reconstruction in veterinary practice, using physiological …

Chondromalacia of the cranial medial femoral condyle; its occurrence and association with clinical outcome in a population of adult horses with stifle lameness.

BACKGROUND: Chondromalacia of the cranial medial femoral condyle (CMFC) is a potential cause of stifle lameness in adult horses. However, there is scant published evidence of either its occurrence or its clinical significance. OBJECTIVES: To document the occurrence of CMFC seen during diagnostic arthroscopy in adult horses with stifle lameness and to investigate its prognostic significance. STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective cohort study. METHODS: The records were reviewed of all horses with unilateral or bilateral lameness localised to the stifle that underwent diagnostic arthroscopy of the crani…

High field magnetic resonance imaging is comparable with gross anatomy for description of the normal appearance of soft tissues in the equine stifle.

High field magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is increasingly used for horses with suspected stifle disease, however there is limited available information on normal imaging anatomy and potential incidental findings. The aim of this prospective, anatomic study was to develop an optimized high field MRI protocol for evaluation of the equine stifle and provide detailed descriptions of the normal MRI appearance of the stifle soft tissues, using ultrasound and gross pathological examination as comparison tests. Nine cadaver limbs were acquired from clinically normal horses. Stifles were evaluated ul…

A study of the anatomy and injection techniques of the ovine stifle by positive contrast arthrography, computed tomography arthrography and gross anatomical dissection.

Although ovine stifle models are commonly used to study osteoarthritis, meniscal pathology and cruciate ligament injuries and repair, there is little information about the anatomy of the joint or techniques for synovial injections. The objectives of this study were to improve anatomical knowledge of the synovial cavities of the ovine knee and to compare intra-articular injection techniques. Synovial cavities of 24 cadaver hind limbs from 12 adult sheep were investigated by intra-articular resin, positive-contrast arthrography, computed tomography (CT) arthrography and gross anatomical dissecti…

Perioperative analgesia and postoperative motor function after saphenous and sciatic nerve blocks in goats undergoing bilateral stifle surgery: A pilot study.

BACKGROUND: The combination of femoral and sciatic nerve blocks offers adequate perioperative analgesia for goats undergoing stifle surgery. However, postoperatively, residual motor dysfunction may lead to distress and discomfort. This study evaluated whether combined saphenous and sciatic nerve blocks provide adequate perioperative analgesia without clinically relevant postoperative pelvic limb motor impairment. METHODS: In this prospective, randomised, blinded study, 19 female goats undergoing bilateral stifle arthrotomy received bilateral ultrasound-guided saphenous and neurostimulator-gui…

Tibiofemoral centroid velocity correlates more consistently with cartilage damage than does contact path length in two ovine models of stifle injury.

Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) rupture and/or meniscal injury are known risk factors for post-traumatic osteoarthritis. We tested the hypothesis that increasingly abnormal tibiofemoral centroid path lengths and velocities would correlate with the severity of cartilage damage in injured sheep. Six sheep underwent combined ACL/medial collateral ligament transection (ACL/MCLx), five complete lateral meniscectomy (Mx), and four sham arthrotomy (Sham). Weighted centroids were used to estimate in vivo tibiofemoral cartilage contact path length during stance and the velocity of relative motion. Car

Safe but stifled: Assessing the impact of space and place on risk and adaptive response among shelter residents during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The COVID-19 pandemic dramatically changed society's interactions with spaces and places. This is especially true for shelter residents who had greater perceived risks of contracting the virus, largely because of communal living. To understand how shelter residents conceptualized their risk and resilience, we implemented a PhotoVoice project with five artists living in a Miami, FL shelter. Although these residents sometimes perceived the shelter as safe, it was often to the detriment of self-determination. Despite profound restrictions, residents still found ways to adapt to their environment.

[Ultrasonographic examination of the stifle joint in the dog. Part 2: Impaired wound healing and neoplastic, congenital, developmental, degenerative and traumatic disorders].

Ultrasonography is a cost-effective, non-invasive technique, which can be performed in conscious dogs. It frequently contributes valuable and even crucial diagnostic information in patients with lameness attributed to the stifle joint. Within the first part of this article, technical requirements and limitations as well as the standardized scanning protocol and ultrasonographic anatomy of the stifle joint are described. Additionally, ultrasonographic features of common pathologies of the stifle joint, including cranial cruciate ligament rupture and meniscal pathologies, are discussed. The seco…

Bilateral Stifle Arthrodesis as a Salvage Procedure for End-Stage Bilateral Grade IV Lateral Patellar Luxation in a Dog: A Case Report.

Grade IV lateral patellar luxation is an advanced orthopedic condition that may be associated with severe skeletal deformities, chronic soft-tissue contracture, and irreversible loss of normal stifle function. Although reconstructive procedures are considered the treatment of choice in most dogs, some end-stage cases may not be amenable to conventional correction. This report describes the clinical presentation, surgical management, and long-term outcome of a young dog with severe bilateral grade IV lateral patellar luxation treated with single-stage bilateral stifle arthrodesis. A 1-year-old,…
