Watermelon stomach (WMS), or gastric antral vascular ectasia, is an uncommon but clinically important cause of chronic occult or overt gastrointestinal (GI) blood loss. Two patients with scleroderma (systemic sclerosis, SSc) and chronic blood loss secondary to gastric vascular ectasia--"watermelon stomach"--are presented. 365 consecutive patient of portal hypertension [Cirrhosis 285, Non-cirrhotic portal fibrosis (NCPF) 50, Extrahepatic portal vein obstruction (EHPVO)-30] were evaluated prospectively over a period of 2 years. Of these, 33 patients underwent successful sclerotherapy with evaluation before and after the same. Dysplasias, the best-defined precancerous lesion of the stomach, are seldomly found alone, but most commonly in association with carcinoma. The established classification of gastric carcinomas includes the site, histological tumour type, grade of differentiation, R classification and pTNM classification with stage grouping. The Laurén classification is important in operative planning (extent of operation on the stomach and oesophagus). Additional conventional classification parameters are at present not proven independent prognostic factors.

A survey of different methods for the production of experimental gastric ulcer in rats is given. 20 male Wistarrats got a chronic gastric ulcer after the injection of 0.05 ml acetic acid (30%) under the serosa. We documented the developing of the ulcer in phases by means of histology. In contrast to other models the Acetic Acid Injection Ulcer (by Takagi et al. 1969) shows similar histology and chronicity to human histology and chronicity.

Sudden death in mature sows due to torsion of abdominal organs (stomach, spleen, liver) is described. The symptoms of gastric carcinoma are nonspecific and uncharacteristic especially during the pregnancy. Two cases of gastric carcinoma in pregnancy are reported. In both cases the diagnosis of the malignoma was not made in an early stage. Therefore both women died within a short period after the delivery due to the metastasis of the gastric cancer. The newborns survived the complicated pregnancy and they were born spontaneously and by cesarean section. From 1977-1982, 1.442 operations of the stomach were performed. In 82 cases a relaparotomy was necessary. Removal of the gallbladder results in an accelerated enterohepatic circulation of bile salts. It has been suggested that reflux of bile into the stomach after cholecystectomy may predispose a patient to the development of gastric lesions. Considering the stage character of the formation of the stomach polyps and various patterns of histomorphologic changes the authors suggest to use polypectomy together with mucousectomy. The operation was carried out upon 38 patients with stomach polyps. The technic of mucousectomy combined with bilateral trunk vagotomy for gastric and duodenal ulcer was devised in the experiments on 62 dogs. This operation was carried out upon 7 patients.

A single case of gastric plasmacytoma showing unusual clinical and pathological features is described. The patient had gluten sensitive enteropathy, and showed increased circulating IgA levels prior to gastrectomy. Progression of the disease was associated with both K and L light chain proteinuria, hypoalbuminaemia, and vasopressin resistant polyuria. Pathological investigation revealed the coexistence of IgA secreting soft tissue plasmacytoma, with IgG secreting myeloma. The significance of these findings is discussed.
