Suppurative Stomatitis [Cheilitis Glandularis]: an underreported entity.

BACKGROUND: Stomatitis and Cheilitis Glandularis are inflammatory conditions of the minor salivary glands with uncertain aetiology, uncommon in clinical practice. Local factors and systemic comorbidities associated with hyposalivation could contribute to the onset of the disease. The aim of this study is to describe retrospectively a case series of Stomatitis and Cheilitis Glandularis from two Oral Medicine and Pathology Departments. Also, a review of the clinical and epidemiological variables and a discussion of the diagnostic criteria is presented. MATERIAL AND METHODS: There were included …

Azithromycin-induced Aphthous Stomatitis: A Case Series.

BACKGROUND: Azithromycin is one of the most popular antibiotics in current clinical practice. This medication generally considered to be saf … le, we presented a neglected adverse effect of azithromycin in medical literature which is aphthous stomatitis. METHODS: We detected three cases with this complication in our center during a one-year period. All the accessible clinical data were recorded and PubMed database was explored to assess the relevant literature. RESULTS: The patients had aphthous …

A Recombinant Vesicular Stomatitis Virus Ebola Vaccine.

BACKGROUND: The worst Ebola virus disease (EVD) outbreak in history has resulted in more than 28,000 cases and 11,000 deaths. We present the final results of two phase 1 trials of an attenuated, replication-competent, recombinant vesicular stomatitis virus (rVSV)-based vaccine candidate designed to prevent EVD. METHODS: We conducted two phase 1, placebo-controlled, double-blind, dose-escalation trials of an rVSV-based vaccine candidate expressing the glycoprotein of a Zaire strain of Ebola virus (ZEBOV). A total of 39 adults at each site (78 participants in all) were consecutively enrolled in…

Chronic ulcerative stomatitis: a distinct clinical entity?

Chronic ulcerative stomatitis (CUS) is a mucocutaneous disorder which is characterised by persistent oral mucosal ulceration. The clinical appearance is often reminiscent of oral lichen planus (OLP) leading to erroneous diagnoses. The immune mediated inhibition of the CUS protein (CUSP) is implicated in the pathogenesis of CUS. CUSP acts as an anti-apoptotic protein and when its action is prevented it may result in significant epithelial injury. The objective or this article is to present the first documented case of CUS in South Africa, with relevant reference to current international literat…

Laryngeal manifestations in atypical recurrent aphthous stomatitis.

UNLABELLED: Recurrent aphthoid stomatitis is characteristically observed in children and adolescents in the form of painful relapsing ulcers in the oral mucosa unaccompanied by evidences of systemic disease. The ulcers appear every one or two weeks for at least one entire year. Some patients suspected for recurrent aphthoid stomatitis develop lesions in atypical sites - mainly in the larynx - concurrently to the ones found in the oral mucosa. AIM: this study aims to describe a series of recurrent aphthoid stomatitis patients with atypical laryngeal injuries. STUDY DESIGN: this is a case seri…

Recurrent aphthous stomatitis: etiology, diagnosis, and treatment.

Recurrent aphthous stomatitis is a very common condition seen frequently by dentists in practice. Although the majority of cases are benign and resolve in less than two weeks, these ulcerations may be indicative of underlying systemic diseases ranging from vitamin deficiency to autoimmunity. Awareness of these correlations can help the dentist make or aid the diagnosis of potentially serious conditions. There are treatments of which the practitioner should be aware that may ameliorate the pain of the ulcerations or shorten their duration. The diagnosis and management of this important conditio…

[Severe stomatitis caused by Mycoplasma pneumoniae infection].

Mycoplasma pneumoniae infection is sometimes followed by systemic reactions such as erythema multiforme major/Stevens-Johnsons syndrome. In the described case, a 30 year-old man developed severe inflammation of the oral mucous membranes following respiratory infection with Mycoplasma pneumoniae. There was also conjunctivitis and diarrhoea, and a target-like eruption was seen on the penis, but apart from slight perioral erythema and periorbital swelling, no further skin involvement was seen. The patient was treated with macrolide antibiotics for 14 days and gradually recovered.

Severe erosive stomatitis: association with immunological diseases?

We present 2 cases of severe erosive stomatitis. The first case involves the rare association of an extensive, erosive lichen planus with a Castleman's tumor. The second case involves the association of lichen planus pemphigoides with severe, obstructive lung disease (bronchiolitis obliterans). We believe that in both cases the conjunction of these conditions is not fortuitous but perhaps due to an underlying immune dysfunction. With patients presenting a severe, therapy-resistant, erosive stomatitis, one should be alerted to the possibility of immunological diseases and/or tumors.

Nicotina Stomatitis - A Report of Two Cases.

Nicotina stomatitis is the inflammation of the minor salivary glands present in the hard palate due to chronic smoking habit. The patients are mostly symptomless and present with multiple red discrete papules in the hard palate surrounded by grayish white areas. The histopathology of the lesion is discussed and cessation of the smoking habit treats the condition within 2-4 weeks.

A modified Newton classification for denture stomatitis.

The effectiveness of denture stomatitis (DS) treatment should be evaluated by associating clinical and mycological parameters. Although widely used in clinical studies, the Newton classification does not accurately represent the degree of severity of palatal inflammation in terms of extent of the lesions and intensity of the erythema. Therefore, a modified Newton classification has been proposed considering the coverage area of palatal inflammation and the erythema level. This consistent and direct ranking will help standardise randomised clinical trials, as well as the statistical comparison …
