[The association of strabismus and aphakia in children].

The frequency and polarity of secondary strabismus was related retrospectively to the onset of deprivation in 131 children with mono- and bilateral aphakia after congenital cataract or perforating injury. The frequency was highest in patients up to 2 years of age at the onset of deprivation. From the 3rd year on, it declined to 50% or less. Esotropia was predominant in the first 2 years of life. At the end of the first decade of life exotropia was up to 80%.

Management of strabismus with botulinum A toxin.

Three hundred eight patients with strabismus were treated with botulinum A toxin (Oculinum) chemodenervation; 153 were followed by the authors for at least 6 months. In this study group, 97 received botulinum A toxin injections as the primary method of treatment of their ocular deviation. Fifty-six received injections after traditional extraocular muscle surgery. Botulinum A toxin was useful for management of patients with recent surgical overcorrections and for management of some patients with sixth cranial nerve palsy. Chemodenervation of an extraocular muscle was not as successful as tradit…

[Strabismus and heterophoria: the situation in Zaire].

The results of a prospective study of 66 cases of squint among black Zaïrian people are presented. The frequency of strabismus in routine ophthalmic consultation was estimated at 1.5% with a large number of exodeviations (1.25%). Excessive divergence was by far the commonest form of exodeviations. A large pupillary distance and telorism are common in Zaïrian people.

Amblyopia and strabismus in congenital ptosis.

Seventeen per cent of 216 cases of simple congenital ptosis developed amblyopia and 19% had a squint. Of those patients with amblyopia, 14% had amblyopia attributable to stimulus deprivation, 21% had anisometropic amblyopia and 51% had strabismic amblyopia. Early refraction, orthoptic assessment and treatment and, where the pupillary axis is occluded, surgery to prevent stimulus deprivation amblyopia are recommended.

The association of strabismus and aphakia in children.

Strabismus was present in 40% of patients with cataracts/dislocated lenses at the time of initial diagnosis and continued to present an obstacle to complete rehabilitation with 86% of the congenital patients and 61% of the acquired patients found to have strabismus at their latest post therapy visits. The type of horizontal deviation found at the initial examinations was distributed equally between esotropia and exotropia in the unilateral congenital cataracts patients. However, all of our patients with strabismus and bilateral congenital cataracts were esotropic. The acquired group was heavil…

A Case of Strabismus in a Patient With Psoriasis.

Psoriasis is a chronic immune-mediated skin disease that may be associated with ocular manifestations, most commonly uveitis, keratoconjunctivitis, and blepharitis. Strabismus has been rarely reported in association with psoriasis. We present a woman with longstanding psoriasis, who developed acquired intermittent alternating esotropia with diplopia; she was later diagnosed with psoriatic arthritis. This case describes an uncommon ocular finding occurring with psoriasis and underscores the importance of coordinated, multidisciplinary care when new ocular or systemic symptoms arise.

History of strabismus management and treatment.

BACKGROUND: Strabismus has been described since antiquity and was attributed to obscure phenomena or anatomical anomalies. The aim of this article is to examine the evolution of knowledge about strabismus and the treatments used to manage it over the centuries. This review helps us to understand how modern approaches emerged. METHODS: A bibliographical study of the history of strabismus was carried out using the Gallica platform of the Bibliothèque nationale de France (BnF). This article is based on nearly a hundred books covering a period from 1598 to 1914. RESULTS: During the Renaissance, …

Postural stability in strabismus and amblyopia.

BACKGROUND: Postural control is a complex skill based on the collaboration of dynamic sensory mechanisms, namely the visual, vestibular, and somatosensory systems. METHODS: A literature survey regarding postural stability in strabismus and amblyopia was conducted using databases in order to collect data for a narrative review of published reports and available literature. RESULTS: The results of the literature survey were analyzed to provide an overview of the current knowledge of postural stability in strabismus and amblyopia. The results revealed that although postural control depends on t…

Botulinum toxin for the treatment of strabismus.

BACKGROUND: The use of botulinum toxin as an investigative and treatment modality for strabismus is well reported in the medical literature. However, it is unclear how effective it is in comparison with other treatment options for strabismus. OBJECTIVES: The primary objective was to examine the efficacy of botulinum toxin therapy in the treatment of strabismus compared with alternative conservative or surgical treatment options. This review sought to ascertain those types of strabismus that particularly benefit from the use of botulinum toxin as a treatment option (such as small angle strabis…

The Impact of Strabismus on Psychosocial Equity.

Strabismus, the condition of misaligned eyes, can result in severe, long-lasting functional and psychosocial sequelae. This review examines existing literature that has described and quantified the psychosocial consequences of strabismus. In particular, the role of strabismus in creating social, psychological, and vocational disparities, and how these intersect with race, ethnicity, and gender, is described. The reviewed data suggest that negative perceptions of strabismus are formed early in life. Overall, exotropia is more easily noticed than esotropia. Esotropia is perceived more negatively…

[Early detection and treatment of strabismus].

An early diagnosis of strabismus is important in order to rule out treatable organic causes and in children, if indicated, to start as early as possible with an amblyopia treatment. Early detection will also decrease the risk for accidents secondary to diplopia, to the loss of binocular vision and to the restriction of the binocular visual field in case of esodeviations. The following therapeutic options exist: in some cases the prescription of the correct refraction will be sufficient, for small deviations a prismatic correction may allow a longstanding treatment, for larger or incomitant dev…

[Interpretation the consensus of strabismus classification].

Strabismus is a deviation of the visual axes relative to each other and is a very common eye disease. Strabismus is not only a cosmetic disease but more importantly damage to visual acuity, binocular vision and stereopsis. There are many different strabismus forms. It is very difficult to accommodate all the different clinical forms with only one classification. Different author has different classification because of different concerns. In order to avoid clinical confusion and provide references for clinicians, literatures from mainstream domestic and international journals and new revised cl…

An update on the genetics of comitant strabismus.

Genetics play a significant role in the development of comitant strabismus and elucidating the relevant mechanisms that cause it may lead to the development of new therapeutic options. The genetics of strabismus are complex and involve the interactions of multiple genes. This article reviews the progress that has been made in the understanding of the genetic causes of comitant strabismus including linkage studies that have identified a variety of candidate sites, RNA and protein studies that have identified genes with altered regulation, and a study that establishes a role for genetic imprinti…

Expansion of the CHN1 strabismus phenotype.

PURPOSE: Hyperactivating CHN1 mutations have been described in individuals with Duane retraction syndrome with or without vertical gaze abnormalities. This was a study of five family members with distinctive ocular dysmotility patterns that co-segregated with a novel hyperactivating CHN1 mutation. METHODS: Participating members of a family segregating pleomorphic incomitant strabismus underwent ophthalmic examinations, and several underwent high-resolution magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the orbits and brain stem. Participant DNA was extracted and amplified for haplotype analysis encompas…

The perception of strabismus by children and adults.

BACKGROUND: Visible strabismus has been shown to have adverse psychosocial consequences. It remains controversial if esotropia or exotropia is perceived more negatively. The aim of this study was to determine if esotropia or exotropia and the eye (side) in which strabismus is present are perceived differently. We also asked our adult participants: (1) if they thought visible strabismus should be corrected by surgery, (2) if they thought that strabismus surgery should only be to improve the cosmesis, and (3) if they thought that the surgery should be paid for by health insurance. METHODS: One …
