Structurally unrelated antibiotics MLSB (macrolide-lincosamide-streptogramin B) compromised with clinically resistant pathogens because of the cross-resistance resulting from the structural modification of rRNA A2058. The structure-activity relationships of a novel 3-O-descladinose azithromycin chemotype conjugating with nucleobases were fully explored with the aid of engineered E. coli SQ110DTC and SQ110LPTD. The conjugates of macrolides with nucleobases, especially adenine, displayed antibacterial superiority over telithromycin, azithromycin and clindamycin against rRNA A2058/2059-mutated en

Streptococcus suis, an emerging zoonotic pathogen, is important reservoirs of antibiotic resistance genes that play critical roles in the horizontal transfer of corresponding resistances. In the present study, 656 antibiotic resistance (AR) genes were detected in 154 of 155 genomes of S. suis strains isolated from the nasopharynx of slaughtered pigs and the lungs of diseased pigs in China. The AR genes were clustered into 11 categories, consisting of tetracycline, macrolides, lincosamide, streptogramin, aminoglycoside, trimethoprim, amphenicols, nucleoside, quinupristin/dalfopristin, glycopept

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in enteric bacteria continues to be detected in turkey flocks and retail products worldwide, including in Can … , however, the use of unrelated antimicrobial classes was also impacting AMR (e.g., aminoglycosides/streptogramins use-tetracycline resistance). As for studying AMU-nCR E. coli linkages, the most robust association was between the parenteral aminoglycosides use and nCR E. coli , though in-feed uses of four unrelated classes (bacitracin, folate pathway inhibito …

Hospital- and community-acquired Staphylococcus aureus infections pose a substantial burden in terms of morbidity, mortality and health care costs. The introduction of new antibiotics to counter this pathogen has frequently been closely followed by the emergence of resistant strains. Most significantly, S. aureus isolates resistant to beta-lactams have become common, and many of these are also resistant to beta-lactamase-resistant penicillins. The rapid spread of methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA) clones across the world often results in hospital outbreaks, but implementation of appropriat

This study is the first report in Italy on the molecular characterization by whole-genome sequencing (WGS) analysis of a Streptococcus suis strain isolated from a human case of meningitis in Italy. The characterized S. suis strain was classified as a serotype 2 (SS2), multilocus sequence typing (MLST) sequence type ST1. The strain exhibited the presence of several virulence genes and resistance to penicillin, tetracycline and macrolide-lincosamide-streptogramin. Finally, we found a frameshift mutation in the gene mrp determining the translation of two truncated forms of the corresponding muram

The co-exposure of antibiotics has important effects on antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) and microbial community aggregation in wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). However, it is unclear whether differences in historical antibiotic exposure stress can determine responses of microbes and ARGs to combined antibiotics. By selecting a high concentration (30 mg·L-1) of sulfamethoxazole (SMX) and trimethoprim (TMP) as historical exposure stress conditions, the effects of SMX and TMP-combined pollution on ARGs, bacterial communities, and their interactions were explored in short-term experiments.

The spread of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) that are present in livestock manures, which are discharged into the environment, is a severe threat to human and animal health. Here, we used 16S rRNA gene profiling and metagenomic analysis to characterize microbial community composition and antibiotic resistance in a manure storage lagoon from a large-scale swine finishing facility. Manure samples were collected at intervals of two years. Both the prokaryotic community and the resistome were dominated by the Firmicutes, Proteobacteria and Bacteroidota. Metagenomic analysis of two samples reve

The steady increase in resistant organisms is related to the widespread use of antibiotics in community and hospital settings. New therapeutic options are needed, including treatments for infections caused by antibiotic-resistant gram-positive organisms. Quinupristin-dalfopristin, the first formulation of a distinct class of antibiotics known as the streptogramins, has activity against a range of gram-positive bacteria that are usually resistant to other agents, including vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus faecium. The pharmacodynamic (postantibiotic effect) and pharmacokinetic characteristics …

Methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus strains pose a serious treatment problem because of their multi-drug resistance (MDR). In staphylococcal strains, resistance to macrolides, lincosamides, and streptogramin B (MLSB) correlates with resistance to methicillin. The rapid transmission of erm genes responsible for MLSB resistance has strongly limited the clinical application of traditional macrolides such as erythromycin. On the other hand, in the age of increasing insensitivity to antibiotics the idea of implementing a therapy based on older generation drugs brings hope that the spread of
