[Post-traumatic stress disorder after traffic accidents].

Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) can occur after motor vehicle accidents (MVAs). It is an anxiety disorder characterized by intrusive reliving of the accident, avoidance of reminders of the trauma and increased arousal. Diagnostic criteria as specified in DSM-IV and in ICD-10 are discussed. A case example illustrates the features of PTSD incurred by MVA. An overview concerning the history of empirical studies on the consequences of MVAs is given. PTSD is one of the more common psychiatric disorders, with prevalence rates after MVAs ranging from 1% to nearly 9%. Other psychiatric and comorb

The reactivation of post-traumatic stress disorder in later life.

Forty-five World War II veterans reporting recent reactivation of chronic post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms were clinically assessed in order to determine war pension disability. In the course of these examinations, factors implicated in the exacerbation of their re-experiencing and arousal symptoms were recorded. The most prominent of these factors was that of physical ill health. Retirement, loneliness, comorbid psychiatric illness, anniversaries, service reunions, and alcohol and psychotropic medication usage were other factors. The natural history of chronic PTSD was observed

Post-traumatic stress disorder after car accidents.

Survivors of car crashes often suffer from a post-traumatic fear of driving, generalized anxiety and depression. Unremitting pains are also common. As part of a pilot study 30 referred subjects were exposed to imagery of driving and accidents. Seventy-seven percent were phobic of driving. Fifty-three percent responded with increased anxiety to the imagery. Twelve treatment referrals received exposure therapy and six improved markedly. An additional four improved when a Benzodiazepine was added temporarily. Four out of eight subjects lost their unremitting pains along with their fears. When gui

Borderline personality disorder and post-traumatic stress disorder in adolescents: protocol for a comparative study of borderline personality disorder with and without comorbid post-traumatic stress disorder (BORDERSTRESS-ADO).

BACKGROUND: Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) is a prevalent and debilitating psychiatric condition often accompanied by Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), with a substantial prevalence of trauma history among affected individuals. The clinical, cognitive, and cerebral parallels shared with PTSD suggest a trauma-related etiology for BPD. Studies consistently demonstrate a reduction in hippocampal volume in individuals with BPD, echoing findings in PTSD. However, the interpretation of this shared neurobiological profile remains contentious, with ongoing debates regarding the independenc

Implications of memory modulation for post-traumatic stress and fear disorders.

Post-traumatic stress disorder, panic disorder and phobia manifest in ways that are consistent with an uncontrollable state of fear. Their development involves heredity, previous sensitizing experiences, association of aversive events with previous neutral stimuli, and inability to inhibit or extinguish fear after it is chronic and disabling. We highlight recent progress in fear learning and memory, differential susceptibility to disorders of fear, and how these findings are being applied to the understanding, treatment and possible prevention of fear disorders. Promising advances are being tr

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder: The Relationship Between the Fear Response and Chronic Stress.

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a disabling psychiatric condition that can develop following a physical, psychological, or sexual trauma. Despite the growing body of literature examining the psychological and biological factors involved in PTSD psychopathology, specific biomarkers that may improve diagnosis and treatment of PTSD have yet to be identified and validated. This challenge may be attributed to the diverse array of symptoms that individuals with the disorder manifest. Examining the interrelated stress and fear systems allows for a more comprehensive study of these symptoms,

A Case Study on Post-traumatic Stress Disorder, Prolonged Grief Disorder, and Adjustment Disorder.

In the International Classification of Disease (ICD)-11, the World Health Organization (WHO) has made significant changes to simplify the diagnosis, especially in disorders specifically associated with stress. These changes help differentiate between post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), prolonged grief disorder (PGD), and adjustment disorder (AjD). This case study covers an individual's journey with signs of all three disorders. After suddenly losing his role in a family-owned business and the unexpected death of his son in his 20s, a man in his early 50s experienced significant mental angui

Interactions between disordered sleep, post-traumatic stress disorder, and substance use disorders.

Disordered sleep is associated with a number of adverse health consequences and is an integral component of many psychiatric disorders. Rates of substance use disorders (SUDs) are markedly higher among individuals with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and this relationship may be partly mediated by disturbed sleep. Sleep disturbances (e.g. insomnia, daytime sleepiness, vivid nightmares) are hallmark features of PTSD and there is evidence that individuals with PTSD engage in substance use as a means of coping with these symptoms. However, prolonged substance use can lead to more severe sl

Finding a home for post-traumatic stress disorder in biological psychiatry. Is it a disorder of anxiety, mood, stress, or memory?

The collection of articles in this issue constitutes the most thorough review of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) yet. At this point, the accumulated phenomenological, epidemiological, biological, and treatment evidence make it crystal clear that PTSD stands alone as a unique psychiatric disorder. It is not the same as depression, although many PTSD patients are also depressed, and it is not the same as the other anxiety disorders, although PTSD patients frequently also suffer with panic attacks, social avoidance, and obsessive ruminations.

Traumatic Events and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder in Adolescents with Severe Eating Disorder Admitted to a Day Care Hospital.

BACKGROUND: It is common for patients with eating disorders (ED) to report traumatic experiences early in their lifetime. The objective of this study was to explore the presence and types of traumatic events and the comorbidity with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) in a sample of adolescents with severe ED. METHOD: A total of 118 adolescents treated at our Eating Disorders Day Care Hospital (EDDCH) were systematically evaluated for depressive symptoms, disordered eating, early traumatic experiences, and presence of PTSD. Likewise, various clinical variables were collected including comor

A Comparison of Veterans with Post-traumatic Stress Disorder, with Mild Traumatic Brain Injury and with Both Disorders: Understanding Multimorbidity.

INTRODUCTION: Mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) are common military service-related conditions diagnosed both singly and together in veterans returning from recent military conflicts overseas. The impact of these disorders in real-world Veterans Health Administration practice has not been studied extensively, and few studies have examined the association of these disorders both by themselves and together with sociodemographic characteristics, psychiatric and medical comorbidities, health service utilization, and psychotropic medication fills. Post-traumatic Stress Disorder in Individuals With Autism Spectrum Disorder: A Literature Review.

This structured narrative literature review examined current evidence on the identification and management of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and trauma-related symptoms in children and adolescents with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Literature was identified through searches of PubMed, PsycINFO, and Google Scholar, focusing on peer-reviewed English-language studies published between 2010 and 2025. Studies were included if they examined PTSD, trauma-related symptoms, assessment, diagnosis, or interventions in autistic children and adolescents, or provided an ASD-specific or broader neur

Neuroimaging in Adolescents: Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder and Risk for Substance Use Disorders.

Trauma in childhood and adolescence has long-term negative consequences in brain development and behavior and increases the risk for psychiatric disorders. Among them, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) during adolescence illustrates the connection between trauma and substance misuse, as adolescents may utilize substances to cope with PTSD. Drug misuse may in turn lead to neuroadaptations in learning processes that facilitate the consolidation of traumatic memories that perpetuate PTSD. This reflects, apart from common genetic and epigenetic modifications, overlapping neurocircuitry engagem

Moderators for the Relationship between Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder and Opioid Use Disorder.

Objective: Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a common risk factor for opioid use disorder (OUD). However, not all individuals with PTSD develop OUD when exposed to opioids. As the underlying moderators remain unexplored, this analysis aimed to determine if non-traumatic adverse experiences and stressors prior to the age of 18 moderate the relationship between PTSD and OUD. Methods: In a matched dataset (n = 830) of individuals with or without PTSD who reported lifetime use of opioids, the following non-traumatic adverse experiences and stressors were assessed: emotional abuse, emotional

Recent advances in the role of miRNAs in post-traumatic stress disorder and traumatic brain injury.

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is usually considered a psychiatric disorder upon emotional trauma. However, with the rising number of conflicts and traffic accidents around the world, the incidence of PTSD has skyrocketed along with traumatic brain injury (TBI), a complex neuropathological disease due to external physical force and is also the most common concurrent disease of PTSD. Recently, the overlap between PTSD and TBI is increasingly attracting attention, as it has the potential to stimulate the emergence of novel treatments for both conditions. Of note, treatments exploiting the
