UNLABELLED: The purpose of this investigation was to understand, from the perspective of the speaker, how seven adults have been able to successfully manage their stuttering. Individual experiences were obtained across the three temporal stages (past, transitional, and current). Recurring themes were identified across participants in order to develop an essential structure of the phenomena at each stage. The ability to make the transition from unsuccessful to successful management of stuttering was associated with six recurring themes of: (1) support, (2) successful therapy, (3) self therapy a…

The capacity to make reliable inductive statements about populations is critical for the advancement of scientific knowledge. An important c … any cases, to obtain high participant numbers for communication disorders of low prevalence such as stuttering. With this in mind, the paper concludes with an attempt to open discussion about ways to redress the problems associated with statistical power.

Stuttering modification techniques can be used effectively in the school setting. In fact, speech-language pathologists can use this environment to their advantage to address not only disfluency but also the emotional and behavioral aspects of stuttering. Toward this end, stuttering modification goals and techniques are outlined, with a discussion of how to adapt them to school environments. Specific topics include writing clear, measurable IEP goals, taking advantage of the school setting to implement these goals, administering stuttering modification within a group therapy mode, involving pa…

Predicting who will relapse after behavioural or dynamic psychotherapy is important. A search for variables likely to predict individuals at risk of relapse was conducted in two groups of successfully treated stutterers. The most powerful predictors were the attainment of three goals by the last day of treatment; namely, skill mastery as evidenced by no stuttering, normal attitudes to communication, and an internalisation of the locus of control. Of the subjects who achieved these three goals, 97% maintained their improved speech in the long term. No subject who failed to achieve any of these …

Persistent developmental stuttering is characterized by speech production disfluency and affects 1% of adults. The degree of impairment varies widely across individuals and the neural mechanisms underlying the disorder and this variability remain poorly understood. Here we elucidate compensatory mechanisms related to this variability in impairment using whole-brain functional and white matter connectivity analyses in persistent developmental stuttering. We found that people who stutter had stronger functional connectivity between cerebellum and thalamus than people with fluent speech, while st…

PURPOSE: To investigate the behavioral and social competency profiles of individuals who stutter and to compare them with persons who do not stutter, according to their parents; to correlate the behavioral and the social competence performances with the severity of stuttering.
METHODS: Sixty-four participants, aged 6 to 18 years, of both genders, were divided into two groups: the study group (SG), composed of 32 individuals with persistent developmental stuttering, and the control group (CG), composed of 32 fluent individuals. The procedures used were fluency assessment, stuttering severity i…

UNLABELLED: The World Wide Web (WWW) was 20 years old last year. Enormous amounts of information about stuttering are now available to anyone who can access the Internet. Compared to 20 years ago, people who stutter and their families can now make more informed choices about speech-language interventions, from a distance. Blogs and chat rooms provide opportunities for people who stutter to share their experiences from a distance and to support one another. New technologies are also being adopted into speech-language pathology practice and service delivery. Telehealth is an exciting development…

INTRODUCTION: Priapism is a urological emergency which is commonly classified into low-flow and high-flow priapism. Immediate intervention is required for low-flow cases as the development of ischaemia ultimately leads to long-term erectile dysfunction. Stuttering or recurrent priapism is less well understood. This subtype is characterised by short-lived painful erections and is commonly encountered in patients with sickle cell disease.
METHODS: A systematic review of the treatment options available for stuttering priapism is presented combined with our own experience in managing this conditi…

OBJECTIVES: Stuttering is a communication disorder that frequently starts at the age of three or four years. Its appearance and progression may impose psychological effects on children and their families. We evaluated parental attitudes in the initial period of stuttering.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Twenty-two children or adolescents (16 males, 6 females; mean age 8.8+/-4.4 years; range 4 to 18 years) were assessed. A semi-structured clinical interview was administered to all the patients to determine whether stuttering was triggered by stressors and to examine the attitudes of parents and the cou…

In view of the fact that stuttering involves time pressure in communicative contexts, the aim of this investigation was to study the effect of stuttering on time estimation. Two matching groups of 47 adults each, one consisting of stutterers and the other of fluent speakers, estimated the duration of four verbal tasks-two that involved speaking and two that did not. Two methods of time estimation were used: production and reproduction. In production, participants were required to perform a task, terminating it when they felt that the specified interval had elapsed. In reproduction, participant…

Support groups for individuals who stutter provide an opportunity for consumers to incorporate emerging or newly learned fluency skills in speaking situations outside of the speech-language clinic. One major theme of this article is to promote the idea that support groups can be utilized by clinicians and consumers as an important adjunct to fluency therapy. In addition to addressing feelings and attitudes associated with stuttering, the supportive environment of such groups serves to provide individuals who stutter with opportunities to work on improved communication skills with several diffe…

We observed abnormal involuntary movements, involving principally the facial and neck muscles, in 23 patients with stuttering. These movements were similar to involuntary movements seen in distinct dystonic syndromes. There was a history of stuttering in the first degree relatives of six patients. The association of stuttering with degenerative neurologic disorders and focal brain lesions, cerebral blood flow changes in patients with developmental stuttering, its occurrence as a side effect of centrally acting drugs, induction and alleviation of stuttering by mechanical perturbation, or by ele…

In an effort to increase clinicians' confidence and competence in addressing attitudes of those adults who stutter, the following explores the nature of attitudes, attitudinal domains meriting consideration throughout the therapy process, and assessment issues. Included in this discussion are the results of a series of studies that examined communication attitudes and profiles of adults. Finally, some thoughts on intervention and specific research needs are presented.

The fluency of the stutterer is discussed in terms of how this has contributed to information on stuttering, measurement of efficacy of therapy and possible therapeutic implications. Much research on physiological aspects of stuttering has relied on analysis of fluent tokens and the validity of this is questioned. Use of largely perceptual measures of the quality of fluency after therapy is evaluated and the therapeutic implications of these findings are discussed.

Electroglottographic (EGG) and acoustic waveforms of the first few glottal pulses of voicing were monitored and voice onset time (VOT) measured during an adaptation task performed by stutterers and controls. The fluent utterances of stutterers resembled those of control subjects. After dysfluencies, however, the EGG signal increased gradually, lending physiological support to the technique of "easy onset" of voicing. EGG waveforms also served to help differentiate mild from severe stutterers. Idiosyncratic ritualized laryngeal behavior, sometimes including physiological tremor, was evident in

On the basis of a clinical study of neurotic development in 79 patients suffering from stammering, the authors present a psychopathological analysis of the polymorphic picture of the disease with stable neurotic and pathocharacterological disturbances and with the presence of peculiar superworship formations. Five clinical variants of the neurotic development in stammering have been identified: astheno-depressive, sensitive, superworshiphypochondriac, obsessive-phobic and hysterical. The formation of the neurotic development is considered in the ontogenetic aspect. The authors analyze a comple

Two single-subject experiments with two adult stutterers were conducted to assess the effect of changing the frequency of phonation intervals that were shorter or greater than prescribed durations during spontaneous speech. Both subjects modified the frequency of prescribed phonation intervals and showed changes in the frequency of these intervals that were positively related to decreases and increases in stuttering frequency. A perceptual analysis of the subjects' speech quality during phonation control conditions showed that when stuttering frequency was reduced, listeners could detect chang…
