Electrochemical titrations of thiosulfate, sulfite, dichromate and permanganate using dual microband electrodes.

Applications of titration using dual gold microband electrodes in generator-collector mode are presented. The main advantage is that the method dispenses with the need for accurate volume measurements and reagent preparation: rather than balancing of molar amounts, the fluxes of analyte and titrant are balanced instead. The titrant is generated electrochemically and the end-point is detected amperometrically by the appearance of a current due to the presence of the titrant at the other band. The aim is to show the versatility and capability of the method that employs disposable mass-produced e

Enhancement of benzo[a]pyrene diol epoxide mutagenicity by sulfite in a mammalian test system.

Sulfur dioxide, a ubiquitous air pollutant, is a co-carcinogen for benzo[a]pyrene (BP). We have demonstrated previously that the interaction between sulfite, the physiological form of sulfur dioxide, and (+/-) -7r,8t-dihydroxy-9t,10t-epoxy-7,8,9,10-tetrahydrobenzo[a]pyrene (anti-BPDE), the ultimate carcinogenic form of BP, results in an enhanced mutagenic effect in Salmonella typhimurium strains TA98 and TA100. We report here that this same co-mutagenic effect of sulfite occurs in a mammalian cell line. Treatment of Chinese hamster V79 cells with 50 nM anti-BPDE, a concentration on the linear

Sulfite oxidase deficiency: clinical, neuroradiologic, and biochemical features in two new patients.

Sulfite oxidase deficiency is characterized by severe neurologic dysfunction, dislocation of the lenses, and the accumulation and excretion of inorganic sulfite, thiosulfate, and S-sulfocysteine. We present the clinical, radiologic, and biochemical findings in two patients with this condition. In both, neurologic problems started soon after birth and progressed rapidly to profound mental retardation, microcephaly, blindness, and spastic quadriparesis. Seizures were a persistent problem throughout the course of their illness. The neurologic abnormalities were associated with progressive destruc

Analysis for total sulfite in foods by using rapid distillation followed by redox titration.

A rapid and accurate analysis for total sulfite as sulfur dioxide has been developed for foods and food products. The method, which combines a selective distillation cleanup procedure with the selective redox titration of sulfite ion by iodine, has been applied to a variety of foods and food products over a period of time with no significant interference encountered in any matrixes other than garlic and leeks. For the foods analyzed, the method typically shows a detection limit of 10 ppm, a relative standard deviation of 7.5% (compared with 10.4% for similar matrixes by the Monier-Williams met

Zero-valent sulfur is the product of assimilatory sulfite reductase and a substrate of cysteine synthase.

UNLABELLED: The process of the assimilatory sulfate reduction consists of sulfate reduction to hydrogen sulfide (H2S) and then H2S assimilation for cysteine synthesis. However, recent studies indicate that both H2S and zero-valent sulfur (S0) are produced during dissimilatory sulfate reduction, which leads to the question of whether S0 is also involved in assimilatory sulfate reduction. In this study, phylogenetic analysis grouped assimilatory sulfite reductases into five clusters, and we re-examined four representatives from two major clusters. These enzymes produced both S0 and H2S from sulf

The Impact of Sulfite Reduction Alternatives with Various Antioxidants on the Quality of Semi-Sweet Wines.

This study is designed to identify strategies for substituting or reducing the use of sulfur dioxide (SO2) while improving the quality of semi-sweet wines. Using the 'Petit Manseng' semi-sweet wine as the research object, the effects of different concentrations and combinations of glutathione (GSH), mannan (Man), vitamin C (VC), chitosan oligosaccharide (COS), and SO2 were investigated. The results show that under VC treatment, the DPPH free radical scavenging rate of the wine is higher than that of other antioxidant treatments, with the V-1 treatment being 16.9% higher than the CK treatment.

Mitochondria-targeted fluorescent probe for simultaneously imaging viscosity and sulfite in inflammation models.

Many diseases in the human body are related to the overexpression of viscosity and sulfur dioxide. Therefore, it is essential to develop rapid and sensitive fluorescent probes to detect viscosity and sulfur dioxide. In the present work, we developed a dual-response fluorescent probe (ES) for efficient detection of viscosity and sulfur dioxide while targeting mitochondria well. The probe generates intramolecular charge transfer by pushing and pulling the electron-electron system, and the ICT effect is destroyed and the fluorescence quenched upon reaction with sulfite. The rotation of the molecu

Singlet oxygen-mediated fluconazole degradation during the activation of chlorine dioxide with sulfite.

Singlet oxygen (1O2)-mediated advanced oxidations have received considerable attention due to their strong capacity to resist the water matrix and high selectivity for organic pollutants. In this study, the activation of chlorine dioxide with sulfite (sulfite/ClO2 process) to effectively produce 1O2 was proposed to degrade fluconazole (FLC) and simultaneously control the formation of disinfection byproducts (DBPs). The results revealed that FLC could be rapidly degraded by 78.6 % within 10 s by the sulfite/ClO2 process. Radical quenching tests and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) measurem

Epilepsy in sulfite oxidase deficiency and related disorders: insights from neuroimaging and genetics.

Sulfite oxidase deficiency (SOD) and related disorders, especially molybdenum cofactor deficiency (MoCD), are a group of rare and severe neurometabolic disorders caused by gene mutations that affect the sulfur-containing amino acid catabolic pathway. These disorders are characterized by distinctive neuroimaging features such as diffuse cerebral atrophy, multicystic encephalomalacia, and ventriculomegaly in early infancy. These features are essential for early diagnosis and treatment. Moreover, the genetics of these disorders are complex but have been increasingly elucidated in the era of molec

Mechanism and Kinetic Study of Cyclodextrin Use to Facilitate NO2 Absorption in Sulfite Solutions.

An innovative strategy to control nitrogen oxide emission from flue gas was developed using the wet flue gas denitrification technology. The use of cyclodextrin (CD) as an additive facilitated NO2 absorption by the sulfite absorbent. Compared with absorption by a sulfite solution (59.12%), the instantaneous absorption efficiencies employing CD improved to 94.57%. Moreover, 48 h of continuous absorption indicated cyclic utilization of CD. The favorable role of CD was ascribed to facilitating the limiting step for the entire NO2 absorption-dissolution process which included both water solubility

Using polyethylene glycol to facilitate the absorption of NO2 in sulfite solutions: Kinetics and mechanism.

A new method was developed to scrub NOx compounds in flue gases during the integrated technology of WFGD associated with ozone oxidation, among which polyethylene glycol (PEG) was utilized initially as an additive to facilitate the absorption of NO2 by sulfite solution. Notably, absorption was significantly facilitated with adding PEG into absorbent. Compared to absorption by sulfite solution alone, NO2 removal efficiency with PEG addition increased from 58.75% to 89.17%. Furthermore, the favorable role of PEG was considered to be ascribed to the its improvement on the rate-determining step am

Prochlorococcus phage ferredoxin: structural characterization and electron transfer to cyanobacterial sulfite reductases.

Marine cyanobacteria are infected by phages whose genomes encode ferredoxin (Fd) electron carriers. These Fds are thought to redirect the energy harvested from light to phage-encoded oxidoreductases that enhance viral fitness, but it is unclear how the biophysical properties and partner specificities of phage Fds relate to those of photosynthetic organisms. Here, results of a bioinformatics analysis using a sequence similarity network revealed that phage Fds are most closely related to cyanobacterial Fds that transfer electrons from photosystems to oxidoreductases involved in nutrient assimila

Biosourced Binder for Wood Particleboards Based on Spent Sulfite Liquor and Wheat Flour.

Currently, the majority of binders used in wood particleboard (PB) manufacturing are formaldehyde-based synthetic resins. Because of the toxicity of formaldehyde, there is a strong demand for eco-friendly alternatives with similar performances and economic viability. In this work, thick spent sulfite liquor (TSSL), an industrial byproduct from sulfite pulp mills, is proposed as a binder for fully bio-based PBs. The results showed that PBs bound with TSSL present appropriate mechanical performance, which was further improved when TSSL was combined with wheat flour at an 84:16 dry weight ratio a

Determination of bromate via the chemiluminescence generated in the sulfite and carbon quantum dot system.

The authors describe a chemiluminescence (CL)-based assay for the determination of bromate. The method is based on the use of a solution of carbon quantum dots (CQDs) and sulfite. Strong CL (peak at 490 nm) is observed when bromate is injected into the solution. The CL increases linearly in the 0.3 to 10 μmol L-1 bromate concentration range, giving a 0.1 μmol L-1 limit of detection (at an S/N ratio of 3). A possible CL mechanism is suggested that involves a redox reaction between the CQDs, bromate and sulfite in the acidic medium. This leads to the formation of hole-injected and electron-injec

Significantly photoinduced synergy between sodium sulfite and ammonium nitrate and the mechanism study.

In this paper, a significantly photoinduced synergy between ammonium nitrate and sodium sulfite via dye decolorization was first found. This study mainly aims to explore the influences of several fundamental aspects on the photoinduced synergy as well as discuss the detailed mechanisms. The dye removal efficiencies of methyl orange and methylene blue of the synergistic system are much higher than that of a single one, and they reach 96.4% and 90.7% when the illumination is 6 and 14 min, respectively. The optimum mass ratio of sodium sulfite and ammonium nitrate in the reaction system is 1:1. T

Protein Radical Formation Resulting from Eosinophil Peroxidase-catalyzed Oxidation of Sulfite.

Eosinophil peroxidase (EPO) is an abundant heme protein in eosinophils that catalyzes the formation of cytotoxic oxidants implicated in asthma, allergic inflammatory disorders, and cancer. It is known that some proteins with peroxidase activity (horseradish peroxidase and prostaglandin hydroperoxidase) can catalyze oxidation of bisulfite (hydrated sulfur dioxide), leading to the formation of sulfur trioxide anion radical ((.)SO(3)(-)). This free radical further reacts with oxygen to form peroxymonosulfate anion radical ((-)O(3)SOO(.)) and the very reactive sulfate anion radical (SO(4)()), whic

Levels of sulfite in three organs from mice exposed to sulfur [corrected] dioxide.

To study whether sulfur dioxide (SO(2)) can enter into the different organs of mice exposed to SO(2), the sulfite contents in brains, hearts, and lungs from male mice were determined by high-performance liquid chromatography with fluorescence detection (HPLC-FD). After reduction and precolumn derivation of tissue homogenates of brains, hearts, and lungs from mice, the mixture was centrifuged, and 5 microl of the resulting supernatant was directly injected into HPLC; the mobile phase consisted of methanol-phosphoric acid (12:88, v/v), and for the fluorescence detection lambdaEX 392 nm and lambd

Isolated sulfite oxidase deficiency: a case report with a novel mutation and review of the literature.

Isolated sulfite oxidase deficiency is a rare but devastating neurologic disease that usually presents in early infancy with seizures and alterations in muscle tone. Only 21 cases have been reported in the literature. We report a case of a newborn infant boy with isolated sulfite oxidase deficiency who presented with generalized seizures on his fourth day of life. Plasma total homocysteine was not detectable. Urinary sulfite, thiosulfate, and S-sulfocysteine levels were elevated. The patient began a low-methionine and low-cysteine diet and was treated with thiamine and dextromethorphan. Howeve

Total Sulfur Dioxide Residuals in Fresh Mushrooms Washed in Sulfite Solutions 1.

Freshly-harvested, cultivated mushrooms ( Agaricus bisporus ) were washed in 1000 ppm solutions of sodium sulfite and stored in ventilated, polyvinylchloride film-overwrapped packages at 5 and 15°C. Total sulfur dioxide of the mushrooms was measured by the modified Monier-Williams procedure numerous times during a 48-h storage period. Initial SO2 averaged 48.1 ppm and subsequently declined at a logarithmic rate. Total SO2 fell below detectable levels (<10 ppm) at about 11.8 and 15.6 h at 15 and 5°C, respectively.
