[The effect of quiet breathing of nitrogen dioxide and sulfur dioxide on the sensitivity of the respiratory tract to hyperventilation of sulfur dioxide].

In 14 patients with an oversensitive bronchial system (non-smokers), we investigated the question as to whether quiet breathing in a nitrogen dioxide or sulphur dioxide atmosphere would modify the sensitivity of the airways to sulphur dioxide. On three consecutive days, over a period of 30 minutes at rest, the patients breathed either filtered air or an atmosphere containing 0.25 ppm nitrogen dioxide, or 0.5 ppm sulphur dioxide. There then followed isocapnic hyperventilation of 0.75 ppm sulphur dioxide in increasing ventilation steps of 3 minutes duration each. On three other experimental days

Attacking Bridging Sulfur by a Soft Cation to Disrupt Lithium Polysulfide Clusters for Low-Temperature Lithium-Sulfur Batteries.

Low-temperature-induced rigid and cage-like lithium polysulfide clusters impede the kinetics of sulfur (S) conversion. Electronic analysis reveals a charge density contrast within these structures, in which terminal S with high charge density serves as a "hard base" to tightly bind with Li+, while the bridging S featuring low charge density acts as a "soft base". This soft base would be the ideal site for lithiation-incurred bond cleavage due to low bond energy. How to further loosen the bridging S-S bond and facilitate Li attack in these sites has not been studied. Guided by hard-soft-acid-ba…

Engineering Spatially Adjacent Sites with Synergistic Spin Polarization Effect to Promote Sulfur Redox Kinetics in Lithium-Sulfur Batteries.

The kinetics of sulfur catalytic reactions serve as a fundamental cornerstone for maximizing both the capacity and stability of lithium-sulfur batteries (LSBs). Recently, investigations into Li-S catalysts predominantly center around the optimization of energy levels to bolster adsorption and catalytic conversion processes. However, a significant oversight persists, as the profound influence of electron spin states on charge transfer dynamics and orbital interactions is frequently neglected. Herein, NH4MnF3 is synthesized as a sulfur host due to the strongly polarized Mn-F bonds, which generat…

The formation of sulfur trioxide radical anion during the prostaglandin hydroperoxidase-catalyzed oxidation of bisulfite (hydrated sulfur dioxide).

The mechanism of prostaglandin synthase-dependent (bi)sulfite (hydrated sulfur dioxide) oxidation was investigated using an enzyme preparation derived from ram seminal vesicles. The horseradish peroxidase-catalyzed oxidation of (bi)sulfite was used as a model system. Incubation of (bi)sulfite with prostaglandin synthase and arachidonic acid, 15-hydroperoxyarachidonic acid, or H2O2 results in the formation of the reactive sulfur trioxide anion radical (SO3(-)). The horseradish peroxidase/H2O2 system also oxidizes (bi)sulfite to SO3(-). This free radical reacts with oxygen resulting in oxygen co…

Bamboo-like Porous Carbon Nanotubes Encapsulating Bi2O3@Fe3O4 as Highly Efficient Sulfur Host Materials for Lithium-Sulfur Batteries.

Lithium-sulfur batteries (LSBs) with high theoretical energy density and exceptional theoretical capacity are considered as a competitive next-generation energy storage. Nevertheless, the practical application of LSBs faces primary hindrances caused by the shuttle effect of polysulfides (LiPSs), volumetric expansion of sulfur, and poor conductivity of discharge products. Therefore, we synthesized conductive porous bamboo-like carbon nanotubes (CNTs) that uniformly encapsulate Bi2O3 nanorods and Fe3O4 nanoparticles (Bi2O3@Fe3O4) as highly efficient sulfur host materials (BFO@CNTs) for cathode c…

Toxic Effects of Sulfur Dioxide: A Review.

Sulfur dioxide (SO2) is a colorless, pungent gas that is a significant contributor to air pollution, with well-documented environmental and health impacts. It is emitted both naturally (e.g., in volcanic activities) and anthropogenically (e.g., fossil fuel combustion, sulfuric acid production, papermaking, and wine preservation). Inhalation represents the primary route of human exposure, particularly in urban and industrial settings. Acute SO2 exposure can lead to airway irritation, laryngospasm, bronchoconstriction, pulmonary edema, and death in severe cases. Chronic exposure, even at low con…

Osteosarcoma of the wing in a sulfur-crested cockatoo.

A 26-year-old female sulfur-crested cockatoo (Cacatua galerita) was evaluated for vocalizing through the night and extending her right wing. Physical examination revealed a large, firm mass extending from the humerus to the distal aspect of the elbow. Computed tomography confirmed a large aggressive mass of the right distal humerus with a large soft tissue component, severe osteolysis, and adjacent periosteal proliferation. Fine-needle aspirates of the mass were most compatible with sarcoma, and osteosarcoma was prioritized. An unstained slide was treated with nitroblue tetrazolium chloride/5-…

Interactions of reactive sulfur species with metalloproteins.

Reactive sulfur species (RSS) entail a diverse family of sulfur derivatives that have emerged as important effector molecules in H2S-mediated biological events. RSS (including H2S) can exert their biological roles via widespread interactions with metalloproteins. Metalloproteins are essential components along the metabolic route of oxygen in the body, from the transport and storage of O2, through cellular respiration, to the maintenance of redox homeostasis by elimination of reactive oxygen species (ROS). Moreover, heme peroxidases contribute to immune defense by killing pathogens using oxygen…

Sulfur is in the Air: Cyanolichen Marriages and Pollution.

Cyanolichens are symbiotic organisms involving cyanobacteria and fungi (bipartite) or with the addition of an algal partner (tripartite). Cyanolichens are known for their heightened susceptibility to environmental pollution. We focus here on the impacts on cyanolichens due to rising air pollution; we are especially interested in the role of sulfur dioxide on cyanolichen biology. Cyanolichens due to air pollution including sulfur dioxide exposure, show symptomatic changes including degradation of chlorophyll, lipid membrane peroxidation, decrease in ATP production, changes in respiration rate, …

[A case of poisoning by oral lime sulfur].

Lime sulfur is a common bactericide with strong alkalinity, and is highly corrosive to humans and animals. It is rare for lime sulfur poisoning clinically. This article discusses the clinical manifestations of a patient who was poisoned by oral lime sulfur. After the poisoning, the mucosa of the lips and pharynx broke, fever, and pulmonary inflammation quickly appeared. The pulmonary CT showed slight interstitial changes in both lungs. Through high flow oxygen inhalation, fluid infusion, drainage, maintenance of water and electrolyte balance, protection of important organ functions, and other …

Sulfur Compounds in Regulation of Stomatal Movement.

Sulfur, widely present in the soil and atmosphere, is one of the essential elements for plants. Sulfate is a dominant form of sulfur in soils taken up by plant roots. In addition to the assimilation into sulfur compounds essential for plant growth and development, it has been reported recently that sulfate as well as other sulfur containing compounds can also induce stomatal movement. Here, we first summarized the uptake and transport of sulfate and atmospheric sulfur, including H2O and SO2, and then, focused on the effects of inorganic and organic sulfur on stomatal movement. We concluded all…

The catalytic effects of sulfur in ethane dehydroaromatization.

In this work, we investigated the catalytic effect of adding sulfur on Zn/ZSM-5 catalyst for direct conversion of ethane to aromatics. We show that the continuous addition of hydrogen sulfide (H2S) effectively stabilizes zinc, prevents coking and results in a highly selective and stable catalyst. Considering the high content of sulfur in shale gas resources, these results highlight the importance of investigating catalysts under realistic operating conditions.

Effect of sulfur dioxide on vascular biology.

Gasotransmitters, such as nitric oxide, carbon monoxide and hydrogen sulfide, can be generated endogenously. These gasotransmitters play important roles in vascular biology, including vasorelaxation and inhibition of vascular smooth muscle cell (VSMC) proliferation. In recent years, sulfur dioxide (SO₂) has been considered as a fourth gasotransmitter. SO₂ is present in air pollution. Moreover, SO₂ toxicity, including oxidative stress and DNA damage, has been extensively reported in previous studies. Recent studies have shown that SO₂ can be endogenously generated in various organs and vascular…

Sulfur metabolism and its contribution to malignancy.

Metabolic dysregulation is an appreciated hallmark of cancer and a target for therapeutic intervention. Cellular metabolism involves a series of oxidation/reduction (redox) reactions that yield the energy and biomass required for tumor growth. Cells require diverse molecular species with constituent sulfur atoms to facilitate these processes. For humans, this sulfur is derived from the dietary consumption of the proteinogenic amino acids cysteine and methionine, as only lower organisms (e.g., bacteria, fungi, and plants) can synthesize them de novo. In addition to providing the sulfur required…

Sulfur dioxide: foe or friend for life?

Sulfur dioxide (SO₂) is a toxic gas and air pollutant. The toxic effects of SO₂ have been extensively studied. Oxidative damage due to SO₂ can occur in multiple organs. Inhaled SO₂ can also cause chromosomal aberrations, DNA damage and gene mutations in mammals. However, SO₂ can also be generated from the sulfur-containing amino acid, L-cysteine. Recent studies have shown that SO₂ has a vasorelaxant effect, and ameliorates pulmonary hypertension and vascular remodeling. SO₂ can also reduce lung injury and myocardial injury in rats. In addition, SO₂ reduces myocardial ischemia-reperfusion injur…

Nutritional essentiality of sulfur in health and disease.

Sulfur is the seventh most abundant element measurable in the human body and is supplied mainly by the intake of methionine (Met), an indispensable amino acid found in plant and animal proteins. Met controls the initiation of protein synthesis, governs major metabolic and catalytic activities, and may undergo reversible redox processes safeguarding protein integrity. Withdrawal of Met from customary diets causes the greatest downsizing of lean body mass following either unachieved replenishment (malnutrition) or excessive losses (inflammation). These physiopathologically unrelated morbidities …

Monovalent iron in a sulfur-rich environment.

A series of low-coordinate, paramagnetic iron complexes in a tris(thioether) ligand environment have been prepared. Reduction of ferrous {[PhTt(tBu)]FeCl}2 [1; PhTt(tBu) = phenyltris((tert-butylthio)methyl)borate] with KC8 in the presence of PR3(R = Me or Et) yields the high-spin, monovalent iron phosphine complexes [PhTt(tBu)]Fe(PR3) (2). These complexes provide entry into other low-valent derivatives via ligand substitution. Carbonylation led to smooth formation of the low-spin dicarbonyl [PhTt(tBu)]Fe(CO)2 (3). Alternatively, replacement of PR 3 with diphenylacetylene produced the high-spin
