In orders to search for possible events in the pathogenesis of Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD), the activity of erythrocyte superoxide dismutase has been determined in thirty-seven patients and fifteen carriers of DMD, comparison to fourty-five age-matched normal controls, seventeen cases of infantile, Kugelberg-Welander type spinal muscle atrophy. We studied the effects of superoxide dismutase (SOD), an enzyme that converts superoxide into peroxide, on the cardiopulmonary response to endotoxin in sheep. Sheep (n = 18) were prepared for chronic measurement of cardiopulmonary variables, including lung lymph flow, by surgically implanting catheters under halothane anesthesia. An enzyme immunoassay has been developed to measure human manganese-superoxide dismutase (Mn-SOD) in serum and urine. The assay can be done in less than 5 h, is highly sensitive (detecting limit, 0.1 ng of Mn-SOD) and simple. The respiration of different species of propionic acid bacteria was found to be resistant to the inhibiting action of cyanide. Propionibacterium globosum, P. globosum (emm), P. vannielii, P. shermanii, P. petersonii, P. pentosaceum and P. raffinosaceum were shown to contain superoxide dismutase, catalase and peroxidase. The highest activity of catalase and superoxide dismutase was found in P. globosum and P. vannielii, the lowest one in P. shermanii and P. raffinosaceum. The superoxide dismutative action of Cu-penicillamine was examined by pulse radiolysis. A crude extract of Ehrlich ascites tumor cell homogenate was found to contain three distinct bands of superoxide dismutase activity by polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis.
