Lipomatous pseudohypertrophy of the pancreas associated with chronic pulmonary suppuration in an adult.

This report describes a man who died at the age of 43 of overwhelming pulmonary suppuration in association with pancreatic steatorrhoea. Autopsy revealed lipomatous pseudohypertrophy of the pancreas. The patient is the longest documented survivor with pulmonary complications of lipomatous pseudohypertrophy of the pancreas. The literature on this rare condition is reviewed.

[The results of treatment of otitis media with suppuration in children by ventilation tubes].

The authors present the results of surgical treatment of secretory otitis media by means of drainage of tympanic cavity. The ventilation tubes used were made of Polish plastic Tarflen. The control assessments were carried out from 6 months to 6 years after the surgery, 58 children were studied, 49 of them had control examination. The improvement in hearing was found in 65 per cent of the patients. The appearance of tympanic membrane after the surgery was as follows: normal in 38.8%, retraction pockets in 10.2%, tympanosclerosis in 8.2%, secretory fluid in 6.1%, perforation of the tympanic memb

Multiple suppurative cystic lesions of the lips and buccal mucosa: a case of suppurative stomatitis glandularis.

Cheilitis glandularis (CG) is a rare inflammatory salivary gland disease that usually affects the lips. Although the etiology of CG is still unknown, it is believed to be a hereditary disease with an autosomal dominant pattern of inheritance. Three clinical presentations of CG are described in the literature: simple, superficial suppurative, and deep suppurative. A case of deep suppurative CG that extended to the buccal mucosa has been previously reported as suppurative stomatitis glandularis (SSG). Here we report a case of SSG in a 64-year-old white female with a history of bilateral renal tr

Acute suppurative thyroiditis with thyrotoxicosis.

BACKGROUND: Acute suppurative thyroiditis (AST) is a rare condition in children, and most children with AST usually have normal thyroid function. OBJECTIVE: To report a case of thyrotoxicosis complicating AST in a child. CASE REPORT: A 6-year-old boy with AST presented with the unusual clinical features of severe thyrotoxicosis. Two palpable masses were found to be of firm to hard consistency with tenderness without any acute inflammatory signs on the overlying skin of the thyroid gland. The diagnosis of AST was confirmed by ultrasonography and fine needle aspiration. Thyroid function tests

Neonatal suppurative submandibular sialadenitis.

Neonatal sialadenitis of the submandibular gland is a very rare clinical entity. Information about the etiopathogenesis and management of the disease is very limited. Prematurity, prolonged gavage feeding and dehydration are the frequent causes. This report presents a rare case of isolated suppurative submandibular sialadenitis in a full-term newborn without any risk factors. Possible etiology, diagnosis and management of this uncommon disease are discussed.

Neonatal suppurative submandibular sialadenitis.

Neonatal sialadenitis of the submandibular gland caused by Staphylococcus aureus is described in 2 full term newborns without any risk factors. Fifteen other newborns with isolated submandibular sialadenitis have been reported in the English language literature. Sialadenitis was caused by S. aureus in 87% and occurred primarily in premature gavage-fed neonates (87%).

[Neonatal acute suppurative parotitis].

Acute suppurative parotitis is highly uncommon in neonates. Approximately 100 cases have been reported in the literature. Dehydration and prematurity are important predisposing factors. Diagnosis is based on clinical signs. White blood cell count and parotid ultrasonography are useful. The most commonly isolated causative organism is Staphylococcus aureus. Initial treatment consists of antistaphylococcal empiric antimicrobial therapy for 7-10 days. The prognosis is good. The illness is not usually associated with recurrences. We describe two 12-day-old newborn infants who presented with fever,
