Evaluation of tongue-, jaw-, and swallowing-related muscle coordination during voluntarily triggered swallowing.

PURPOSE: The prosthodontic treatment of dysphagic patients may preclude favorable treatment outcomes due to uncoordinated or discordant oral and pharyngeal functions. Since optimal treatment requires a full understanding of the mechanism of oropharyngeal swallowing, this study seeks to describe the normal temporal pattern of tongue-, jaw-, and swallowing-related muscle coordination during voluntarily triggered swallows in healthy patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Tongue pressure against the hard palate at seven measuring points, swallowing sounds, and surface electromyography (EMG) activity of…

[Swallowing rehabilitation in an elderly patient with Wallenberg's syndrome--role of videofluorography and the swallowing provocation test].

A 65-year-old man was admitted to our department due to severe dysphagia, dysarthria, and aspiration pneumonia. Dysphagia and dysarthria were caused by lateral medullary infarction (Wallenberg' s syndrome). After the patient recovered from pneumonia, the abnormality of swallowing was assessed by a swallowing provocation test and videofluorography. Two months after the start of swallowing training, a swallowing provocation test showed that the swallowing reflex had improved and videofluorography showed that the magnitude of aspiration to the trachea had decreased. The patient began taking food

Pressure and Timing Differences Between Volitional and Non-Cued Saliva Swallows Measured with Pharyngeal High-Resolution Manometry.

Volitional and spontaneous swallowing occur regularly throughout the day, yet most research has primarily focused on cued volitional swallow … t-tests revealed that on average, significantly greater pressures were generated during volitional swallows than non-cued saliva swallows in the velopharynx (p < 0.0001), tongue base (p = 0.045), and UES (post-closure) regions (p = 0.0058), while no significant differences were noted in the hypopharynx (p > 0.05). Positive linear relationships between swa …

Effect of forage type on swallowed bolus mass and a method for counting swallows in dairy cattle.

Dry matter intake (DMI) is a primary determinant of milk production in grazing dairy cows and an ability to measure the DMI of individual cows would allow herd managers to formulate supplementary rations that consider the amount of nutrients ingested from grass. The 2 related aims of this experiment were to define the mean number of swallowed boli and mass of the swallowed boli in Holstein-Friesian dairy cattle offered a variety of forages commonly fed in the dairy industry of southeastern Australia, and to evaluate 2 indirect methods for counting the number of swallows. Twelve ruminally-fistu…

Intestinal parasites among migrant barn swallows (Hirundo rustica) in the central region of Mazandaran Province, Northern Iran.

AIM: Swallows are a family of migratory birds found worldwide except Antarctica. Annually, a number of species of swallows migrate to Iran. As they make their nests close to human living places, this may be a potential risk for public health. Conversely, no study has been conducted on intestinal parasitic infections of these birds so far. Therefore, the objective of this study was to determine the prevalence of intestinal parasites in migratory swallows (Hirundo rustica) in the central region of Mazandaran Province, Northern Iran. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, 205 fece…

Characterizing Puree Bite Sizes in People with Normal and Disordered Swallowing: Predictors and Impact on Swallowing Safety and Efficiency during Flexible Endoscopic Evaluation of Swallowing.

UNLABELLED: <p>Introduction: Pureed foods are an important part of standardized swallowing assessments, yet there is limited research characterizing typical bite sizes of pureed foods in people with normal and disordered swallowing, nor how puree bite sizes relate to functional swallowing outcomes. Therefore, this study aimed to characterize self-selected bite sizes of pureed foods in outpatient adults by: (1) assessing the effects of puree type, puree color, swallowing instruction, transnasal endoscopy, and flexible endoscopic evaluation of swallowing (FEES) on puree bite size; and (2) examin

Evaluation of feeding difficulties using videofluoroscopic swallow study and swallowing therapy in infants and children.

BACKGROUND: Infants and children with feeding difficulties have swallowing dysfunction and high risk of aspiration, which could be silent without choking, resulting in recurrent pneumonia and long-term respiratory morbidity. Videofluoroscopic swallow study (VFSS) is a useful tool for real-time visualization of the swallowing process and airway aspiration. This study reported a single-institutional 10-year experience of VFSS in pediatric patients with feeding difficulties and the efficacy of swallowing therapy. METHODS: From 2011 to 2020, 30 infants and children with feeding difficulties recei

Swallowing Analyses of Neonates and Infants in Breastfeeding and Bottle-feeding: Impact on Videofluoroscopy Swallow Studies.

Introduction  Dysphagia, when left untreated, can result in an increase in morbidity and mortality rates, especially among infants with history of life-threatening neonatal diseases. The videofluoroscopy swallowing study (VFSS) is considered the gold standard for the diagnosis of dysphagia. There are few imaging studies of infant swallowing based on videofluoroscopy, none of which were performed during breast-feeding. Objective  To analyze the similarities and differences in infant swallowing function -regarding the feeding method - breast or bottle - and the impact on videofluoroscopy finding

Infant Videofluoroscopic Swallow Study Testing, Swallowing Interventions, and Future Acute Respiratory Illness.

OBJECTIVES: Tube feedings are commonly prescribed to infants with swallowing abnormalities detected by videofluoroscopic swallow study (VFSS), but there are no studies demonstrating efficacy of these interventions to reduce risk of acute respiratory illness (ARI). We sought to measure the association between swallowing interventions and future ARI, among VFSS-tested infants. METHODS: Retrospective cohort of all infants (<12 months) tested with VFSS at a children's hospital between January 1, 2010, and January 1, 2012. Hospital ARI encounters (emergency, observation, or inpatient status) in a

Situational Syncope Triggered by Swallowing.

Syncope is characterized by a transient loss of consciousness. Swallow syncope, a rare cause of syncope, is caused by vagus nerve activation resulting in vasodilation and bradycardia, thus causing transient hypotension and cerebral hypoperfusion. It is diagnosed through clinical history, cardiac, and esophageal evaluation. We present a case of swallow syncope in a patient with significant cardiac history. Initial cardiac and esophageal testing was normal. Long-term telemetry revealed bradycardia with swallowing, and the patient underwent pacemaker placement. Swallow syncope is associated with

Consciousness Disorders and Swallowing Difficulties.

With the advancement of medicine, the survival rate of patients with brain injuries has significantly increased. Among these patients, some remain in a chronic state of altered consciousness and experience difficulties in swallowing. Swallowing difficulties can lead to clinical issues such as aspiration and malnutrition. Since swallowing function is closely related to the level of consciousness, effective oral swallowing is an early sign of consciousness recovery. The relationship between swallowing difficulties and the prognosis and quality of life of patients with consciousness disorders is

Swallowing function in advanced age.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: To present current literature regarding swallowing function in advanced age, including healthy ageing, dysphagia and trends in multidisciplinary team service delivery. RECENT FINDINGS: Normative studies support swallowing efficiency but greater variability in healthy advanced age, through to 100 years old. Deviations from normative data and symptoms of dysphagia leading to aspiration or nutritional risk, imply swallowing disorder, rather than simply the ageing process. Quantitative and qualitative studies are emerging that promote management of swallow dysfunction for an ag

Swallowing and Temporomandibular Disorders in Adults.

INTRODUCTION: Temporomandibular disease (TMD) etiology is multifactorial and is related to many perpetuating, predisposing, and initiating factors. The daytime parafunctions may have an important role in TMD pathogenesis. The most frequent parafunctions analyzed were the static parafunction (ie, clenching) and the dynamic parafunction (ie, grinding). In the present paper, the authors evaluated the swallowing (an oral function/parafunction) with the surface electromyography in patients with TMD. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty patients with TMD problems (nonhealthy patients, NHP) (mean age: 33 ±
