OBJECTIVES: Head and neck cancer (HNC) is the sixth most common cancer worldwide. The condition and its treatment often lead to marked morbidities and, for some patients, premature death. Premature craniosynostosis is a rare condition, with a wide range of incidence estimations in the literature. The aim of this study was to establish the current incidence among the Swedish population. Osteoporosis is common in the elderly, and it is associated with lifetime exposure to endogenous hormones and vitamin D intake, both of which are associated with cancer development. We studied 1,432 febrile travelers from Sweden who had returned from malaria-endemic areas during March 2005-March 2008. In 383 patients, paired serum samples were blindly analyzed for influenza and 7 other agents. For 21% of 115 patients with fever of unknown origin, serologic analysis showed that influenza was the major cause.
