[The assessment results of patients with neurootological symptoms (author's transl)].

Neurootological symptoms in 710 patients were assessed by otorhinolaryngological examination, audiometry, vestibulometry, electroencephalography, echoencephalogram, ophthalmological and neurological examination, skull, temporal bone and cervical spine X-rays, electrocardiography, and lumbar puncture. Where abnormal findings occurred further assessments such as brain-scan, vertebral angiography, Xenon clearance and computerized axial tomography were done. Analysis of the case histories showed that there were 45 patients with organic lesions of the brain, 79 with cerebrovascular disease, 68 with

A study of the agreement between patient self-assessment and study personnel assessment of bleeding symptoms.

BACKGROUND: Clinical trials investigating new platelet transfusion therapies frequently require the assessment of bleeding for the study outcome. These assessments are commonly performed by study personnel and can be time-consuming. The purpose of this study was to assess whether patients were able to reliably assess their bleeding status on a daily basis. STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: Patients admitted to hospital to receive chemotherapy for acute leukemia or to undergo allogeneic peripheral blood progenitor cell transplant were included. Patients were given an introduction to a form for documen

Nocturnal Risk Assessment and Its Association With Anxiety Symptoms.

Human risk assessment (RA), the attentional and behavioral activities involved in detecting and analyzing threat, is feasibly enhanced at night to protect against hidden danger. However, this enhanced RA at night might come at a cost and thus signal increased risk for anxiety disorders. To test the hypothesis that the nighttime enhances RA and its associations with anxiety, the current study randomly assigned healthy volunteers (N = 87, Mean age = 22.4; 69% Female) to visit the laboratory at day or night. Participants completed a novel task that presented images depicting neutral content, inju

Assessment of patient-reported symptoms in Hermansky-Pudlak syndrome.

PURPOSE: Hermansky-Pudlak syndrome (HPS) is a rare multisystem disorder associated with defective biogenesis of lysosome-related organelles. Patient-reported symptoms in HPS have not been studied. METHODS: An 84-question HPS symptom scale assessing symptom prevalence, severity, and frequency across multiple organ systems was developed. Eighty-five individuals with HPS or caregivers of individuals with HPS completed the questionnaire. Symptoms of participants with BLOC-2 (i.e., HPS-3, HPS-5, HPS-6) and BLOC-3 (i.e., HPS-1, HPS-4) disease and children and adults with BLOC-3 disease were compare

Assessing bladder, bowel and sexual symptoms: a neurologist's guide.

Symptoms related to bladder, bowel and sexual dysfunction are common in patients with neurological diseases and are associated with significant morbidity and impacts on quality of life. However, compared with other neurological problems, they are often less visible, under-ascertained and under-treated. This review aims to provide neurologists with an evidence-based, structured approach to evaluating bladder, bowel and sexual dysfunction in patients with neurological disorders. As with any other presenting concern, this requires a structured approach to history, examination and the judicious us

Sleep Symptoms and Disorders in Episodic Migraine: Assessment and Management.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: We review research on sleep symptoms and disorders in patients with episodic migraine and propose a framework for evaluating sleep symptoms in this patient population. RECENT FINDINGS: Patients with episodic migraine consistently report poorer sleep on validated self-reports compared to those without migraine. In polysomnographic studies, children with migraine have objectively shorter sleep duration and lower percentage of REM sleep interictally. Prospective actigraphy studies in adults and children suggest that there are no significant changes in sleep duration, efficienc

Assessment and management of lower urinary tract symptoms in men.

Lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) is a broad term that covers a range of urinary issues, which are often categorised as storage and voiding symptoms. Storage symptoms include increased frequency, nocturia, urgency and urge incontinence, while voiding symptoms include hesitancy, suboptimal flow, dribbling and incomplete emptying. In men, the most common causes of LUTS are benign prostatic hyperplasia (prostate enlargement) and overactive bladder. This article provides an overview of the anatomy of the prostate and outlines the assessment process for men presenting with LUTS. It also explains

Assessment and Treatment of Negative Symptoms in Schizophrenia-A Regional Perspective.

Clinicians and researchers consider that there are a variety of symptoms that constitute negative symptoms in schizophrenia, and they may use different definitions for the same symptoms. These differences are also reflected in a variety of negative symptom rating scales. Both research and clinical work are negatively affected by the lack of consensus regarding the symptoms that constitute negative symptoms in schizophrenia. Leading research groups have investigated ways to reduce heterogeneity in the domain of negative symptoms in schizophrenia; however, little attention has been paid to regio

Assessment of Trauma Symptoms in Toddlers and Preschoolers Living in Poverty.

A first-line screening instrument, the Preschool Inventory of Trauma Symptoms (PITS), was developed to assess trauma symptoms with a diverse sample of 150 toddlers and preschoolers (M = 2.49 years; SD = 1.12). Items reflected the current trauma literature, assessment measures, and diagnostic criteria for very young children. A principal component analysis produced a 34-item, four-factor model: Arousal and Hyper-Reactivity, Fearful Attachment, Intrusion and Re-Experiencing, and Avoidance and Negative Cognition and Mood. One validity scale, Response Style, was also developed. All scales signific

Systematically assessed symptoms as outcome predictors in emergency patients.

INTRODUCTION: It is known that symptoms are predictive of mortality in "nonsurgical" emergency patients. It is unknown whether a prospective, systematic, and "unscreened" assessment of all symptoms is of any prognostic value. Therefore, we aimed to examine the association between symptoms and outcomes in an all-comer population. METHODS: Data were acquired during 6weeks at the ED of the University Hospital Basel, a tertiary hospital. Consecutive patients presenting to the ED were included. Symptoms at presentation were systematically assessed using a comprehensive questionnaire. RESULTS: A c

[Objective assessment of symptoms and informing patients of surgical risks].

Genital prolapse is a functional pathology presenting with numerous urinary, genito-sexual, and anorectal symptoms. These symptoms are responsible for an alteration of the quality of life, sometimes associated to a real anxiety-depressive syndrome. Because of these complex intricacies, the management of these disorders became multidisciplinary. Tools to measure the impact of prolapse symptoms on the quality of life became a necessity. Such instruments should allow a correlation of the functional symptomatology at the anatomic stage, raise a surgical indication based on the functional disturban

Sensitivity to change of scales assessing symptoms of bulimia nervosa.

Measures employed in a therapy study with a pre-post design must be sensitive to the detection of treatment-related changes. In the present study, the treatment sensitivity of 12 internationally established scales that assess bulimia-relevant aspects of eating and body concern is analyzed. The scales can be sorted along three dimensions (Disturbed Eating, Restrictive Eating Behaviors and Body Dissatisfaction). Measures of the same dimension were compared in a sample of 45 women with the diagnosis of bulimia nervosa. Patients completed the scales before and 6 weeks after the end of cognitive-be
