Children with congenital talipes deformity were assessed photographically at birth, and radiologically prior to a standard staged surgical procedure, carried out by one surgeon. A total of 111 feet of 86 children were assessed clinically and radiologically at 4 years of age. Feet with more deformity at birth and poorer preoperative calf muscle required more surgery and had less satisfactory results. Unilaterally affected feet required less surgery and had significantly better postoperative clinical results than bilaterally affected feet. There was a trend toward poorer results in children with…

BACKGROUND: Talipes equinovarus (TEV), commonly known as clubfoot, is a congenital skeletal deformity characterized by abnormal three-dimensional positioning of the foot, ankle, and lower limb. This condition arises from developmental anomalies affecting multiple tissues in the lower limb, leading to disrupted alignment of foot and ankle joints. Without timely and appropriate intervention, TEV can result in persistent pain, structural deformities, and long-term functional impairments.
SUMMARY: TEV is a congenital skeletal (musculoskeletal) disorder with unresolved molecular etiology. However,…

BACKGROUND: Also known as clubfoot, idiopathic congenital talipes equinovarus (ICTEV) is the most common pediatric deformity and occurs in 1 in every 1000 live births. Even though it has been widely researched, the etiology of ICTEV remains poorly understood and is often described as being based on a multifactorial genesis. Genetic and environmental factors seem to have a major role in the development of this disease. Thus, the aim of this review is to analyze the available literature to document the current evidence on ICTEV etiology.
METHODS: The literature on ICTEV etiology was systematica…

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the application of fetuses with talipes equinovarus(TE)using chromosomal microarray analysis(CMA)technology.
METHODS: From May 2012 to June 2015, 54 fetuses were found with TE and with or without other structural anomalies by prenatal ultrasound. Karyotyping was taking for them all, and the fetuses with normal karyotypes took another CMA test. The data were analyzed with CHAS software. Finally all the cases were followed up to know about their pregnancy outcomes.
RESULTS: One of the 54 cases was detected with abnormal karyotype which was trisomy 18(2%, 1/54). CMA wa…

BACKGROUND: Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has been shown to be a useful tool in the evaluation of the complex deformities which are present in congenital talipes equinovarus (clubfoot).
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate MRI with the multiplanar reconstruction (MPR) technique as a new method for assessment of clubfoot.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Seven infants with 11 clubfeet were studied by using three-dimensional gradient-echo MR sequences. MPR was performed from the acquired image data in orthogonal, single and double oblique planes to demonstrate the complex deformities in clubfoot. Three angles (tal…

The authors provide a review of the principles of talectomy as a surgical treatment option for severe, rigid, and resistant clubfoot deformities. Such deformities are associated with a high recurrence rate and frequently involve a large number of surgical interventions to attain a satisfactory result. Talectomy has been successfully used as both a primary and salvage procedure to treat such deformities, often eliminating the need for subsequent surgeries. A discussion of the operative technique, indications, advantages, and common complications associated with the procedure is presented. In ad

We report the absence of the posterior tibial artery in a 3-month-old patient with idiopathic clubfoot. Although anomalies of the anterior tibial artery are common, complete absence of the posterior tibial artery associated with talipes equinovarus deformity has not been reported.

Equinovarus foot deformity as seen in neurologic disease is often caused by imbalance in muscle tone. One of the possible operative procedures to correct this deformity is transposition of the posterior tibial tendon. The effect of this intervention is disputed in the orthopaedic literature. The results of this procedure are presented in a retrospective study of 9 children (11 feet). The mean follow-up period was 19 months (8-40). In all cases but one the results were satisfactory. The indications and complications of this operation are discussed.
