Temperament and character dimensions of patients with adult separation anxiety disorder.

BACKGROUND: There is growing evidence suggesting that separation anxiety can occur in adults. We aimed to determine temperament and character dimensions in patients with adult separation anxiety disorder (ASAD) compared to patients with panic disorder (PD) and healthy subjects. METHODS: The study sample included 77 outpatients with ASAD, 44 outpatients with a PD with or without agoraphobia diagnosis, and 35 healthy subjects. ASAD diagnoses were confirmed with Structured Clinical Interview for Separation Anxiety Symptoms. Other measures included Adulthood Separation Anxiety Checklist, Separati…

The concept of temperament in psychoactive substance use among college students.

BACKGROUND: Substance abuse is among the leading causes of preventable diseases and premature death but reasons and conditions leading to substance abuse are complex and multifaceted. Different models of abuse and dependence assume an underlying emotional vulnerability. Individual behavioral and emotional reactivity patterns of personality are considered in the concept of temperament but studies linking different types of temperament with substance use are rare. METHODS: In this study we investigated 1380 inhabitants (59.7% females; 40.3% males) of residential student homes in Austria, using …

Neural circuits, neurotransmitters, and behavior: serotonin and temperament in bulimic syndromes.

In bulimia nervosa (BN), and in related binge-purge syndromes, factors affecting central serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine, 5-HT) function appear to contribute not only to appetitive dysregulation but also to temperamental and personality manifestations. Drawing upon findings from neurobiological, molecular-genetic, and brain-imaging studies, we present an integrative model of the role of 5-HT function in bulimic syndromes. At the core of our model is a consideration of the ways in which diverse hereditary and environmental influences impact the action of the 5-HT system. We believe that our mode…

Toddlers' temperament profiles: stability and relations to negative and positive parenting.

This study investigated the type and stability of temperament profiles in toddlers, and relations of profile probability to negative and positive parenting trajectories. Mothers (N = 96) rated their child's (41 girls and 54 boys) Sociability, Anger Proneness, and Activity Level four times during 1 year. The assessment of parenting included both maternal self-reports and observational measures. Latent profile analysis indicated three child temperament profiles: a well-adjusted 'typical' profile, an 'expressive' profile with heightened externalizing problems, and a 'fearful' profile with heighte…

In search of Aristotle: temperament, human nature, melancholia, creativity and eminence.

Is suffering associated with melancholia and "madness" necessary for artistic creativity and eminence? Or do creativity and leadership have something to do with the temperaments associated with affective disease? We integrate concepts dating back to Greek psychological medicine and philosophy--especially work attributed to Aristotle--with modern data-based examination of the role of cyclothymic and related temperaments in the interface between mixity, the bipolar spectrum and normality. We place our query within the general framework of evolutionary biology and human nature. In doing so, we pr…

Temperament and school-aged children's coping abilities and responses to stress.

To measure children's temperament and coping abilities, we administered the Stress Impact Scale to sixty 9- to 12-year-old children. Trained observers also completed an observational rating scale of coping behavior, the Coping Inventory, for each of the participants. The Stress Response Scale and Middle Childhood Temperament Questionnaire were completed by the mothers of the participants. Results showed that activity level was most predictive of effective coping as observed in the school environment. Dimensions of temperament that were most closely associated with less difficult responses to s…

Temperament Profiles and Their Association With Stuttering-Related Outcomes in a Clinical Cohort.

PURPOSE: Previous research on temperament in developmental stuttering has primarily treated emotional reactivity and self-regulation as separate constructs. Examining their interaction is likely to yield more comprehensive insights into their joint influence on stuttering-related outcomes. Therefore, this study examined how the interplay between emotional reactivity and self-regulation is reflected in differences in stuttering severity, speech attitude, levels of anxiety and depression, and the impact of stuttering. METHOD: A total of 322 younger (ages 3-8 years) and 468 older children (ages …

Use of the Temperament and Character Inventory to describe the effectiveness of Gestalt therapy.

BACKGROUND: Gestalt therapy (GT) is a dynamic, integrative, embodied approach that addresses human existence as a fundamentally relational modality, in which the experience of the self is situated in a dynamic organism-environment field. Assessments of GT are scarce, often avoided, and generally qualitative. The Therapy Gestalt TCI (THEGETCI) study aimed to show that the modifiable character dimensions of the 125-item Temperament and Character Inventory (TCI-125), as well as other personality temperament dimensions and emotional measures, change after a GT program. METHODS: A psychotherapeuti…

The structure of pathological personality traits and temperament in a Persian community sample.

The present study examined the extent to which the currently established factor structure of the Personality Inventory for DSM-5 (PID-5; Krueger et al., 2013) generalizes to a large Persian community sample, as well as relations between the resulting PID-5 factors and two temperament measures. Cross-sectional data came from 946 adults (65% female) from western Iran. With the use of exploratory structural equation modeling (ESEM) with target rotation, we found factor loadings that showed fairly similar patterns to those found in two previous meta-analytic PID-5 studies with predominantly North …

Validation of the Approach-Avoidance Temperament Questionnaire in Individuals with Anxiety and Depression.

The Approach-Avoidance Temperament Questionnaire (ATQ) is a well-established measure assessing heightened sensitivity and reactivity to reward/positive stimuli (approach temperament) and to punishment/negative stimuli (avoidance temperament). These basic dimensions of personality are believed to be important for understanding the etiology and maintenance of anxiety and depressive disorders. Despite the ATQ's potential utility in clinical psychology research, its psychometric properties and factor structure have yet to be examined in a psychiatric sample. The aims of the present study were to 1…

The influence of temperament and perinatal factors on language development: a longitudinal study.

Early language development is characterized by large individual variation. Several factors were proposed to contribute to individual pathways of language acquisition in infancy and childhood. One of the biologically based explaining factors is temperament, however, the exact contributions and the timing of the effects merits further research. Pre-term status, infant sex, and environmental factors such as maternal education and maternal language are also involved. Our study aimed to investigate the longitudinal relationship between infant temperament and early language development, also conside…

Association between affective temperaments and severe coronary artery disease.

BACKGROUND: Affective temperaments are regarded as subclinical manifestations of major mood disorders and cumulating evidence suggest their role in cardiovascular (CV) pathology. We wished to analyze associations between affective temperaments and severe coronary artery disease (CAD), as assessed by coronary computed tomography angiography (CCTA). METHODS: 225 consecutive patients referred to CCTA due to suspected CAD were included. Medical history and demographic parameters were recorded and all patients completed the Temperament Evaluation of Memphis, Pisa, Paris, and San Diego Autoquestion…

The Characteristics of Mood Polarity, Temperament, and Suicide Risk in Adult ADHD.

The present study was designed to shed light on a topic rarely explored and to suggest possible ways to detect risk factors for the presence of suicidal ideation and behaviors in a sample of adult patients with Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). This study also explored the association between ADHD, affective temperaments, the presence of hypomania symptoms, and suicide risk. We hypothesized that (compared to healthy controls) (1) patients with adult ADHD would report more negative affective temperaments and more hypomania symptoms and (2) that they would have a higher suicide ri…

Inhibited Temperament and Hippocampal Volume in Offspring of Parents with Bipolar Disorder.

BACKGROUND: Prior studies have suggested that inhibited temperament may be associated with an increased risk for developing anxiety or mood disorder, including bipolar disorder. However, the neurobiological basis for this increased risk is unknown. The aim of this study was to examine temperament in symptomatic and asymptomatic child offspring of parents with bipolar disorder (OBD) and to investigate whether inhibited temperament is associated with aberrant hippocampal volumes compared with healthy control (HC) youth. METHODS: The OBD group consisted of 45 youth, 24 of whom had current psychi…
