Association of genetic variation in the leptin-melanocortin system with drive for thinness in patients with eating disorders: A pilot study.

We aimed to investigate whether genetic variants in the leptin-melanocortin system involved in anorexigenic signaling influence personality dimensions and psychopathological symptoms in eating disorders (ED) patients. The population consisted of 309 ED patients [221 with anorexia nervosa (AN) and 88 with bulimia nervosa (BN)] and 396 healthy controls. Patients underwent psychometric assessment using the Eating Disorders Inventory Test-2 (EDI-2) and the Symptom Checklist 90 Revised (SCL-90R) questionnaires. Fourteen tag-SNPs in the LEP, POMC, and MC4R genes, were determined. Drive for thinness …

Constitutional thinness might be characterized by physiologically adapted and not impaired muscle function and architecture: new results from the NUTRILEAN study.

PURPOSE: While muscle mass and skeletal muscle fibers phenotype have been shown atypical in constitutional thinness (CT), force production capacities and its architectural determinants have never been explored. The present study compared muscle functionality and architecture between participants with CT and their normal-weight (NW) counterparts. METHODS: Anthropometry, body composition (Dual-X-ray Absorptiometry), physical activity/sedentary behavior (ActiGraph wGT3X-BT), ultrasound recording of the Vastus Lateralis (2D-ultrasound system), and functional capacities at maximal isometric and is…

Pursuit of thinness and onset of eating disorder symptoms in a community sample of adolescent girls: a three-year prospective analysis.

Community-based prospective studies are needed to shed light on mechanisms that may influence development of eating disorders and identify variables that could serve as potential targets for prevention efforts. In this paper we examine level of weight preoccupation and other variables prospectively associated with age of onset of eating disorder symptoms over a 3-year interval in a community sample (N = 939) of young adolescent girls. 3.6% (32/887) experienced onset of symptoms over the interval. Only one factor, a measure of Weight Concerns, was significantly associated with onset (p < .001).

Comparison of Adiponectin Levels in Anorexia Nervosa, Bulimia Nervosa, Binge-Eating Disorder, Obesity, Constitutional Thinness, and Healthy Controls: A Network Meta-Analysis.

Adiponectin is a protein hormone that is produced and secreted primarily by adipose tissue. The levels of adiponectin in those with eating disorders, obesity, and healthy controls have been extensively studied. However, the general picture of the differences in adiponectin levels across the mentioned conditions is still unclear and fragmented. In this study, we pooled previous studies and performed a network meta-analysis to gain a global picture of comparisons of adiponectin levels across eating disorders, obesity, constitutional thinness, and healthy controls. Electronic databases were searc…

A five-year longitudinal study reveals progressive cortical thinning in narcolepsy and faster cortical thinning in relation to early-onset.

Narcolepsy with cataplexy is characterized by excessive daytime sleepiness, cataplexy, and other REM sleep phenomena. Previous MRI studies were cross-sectional in design and could not adequately address if disease progression leads the brain structural abnormalities in narcolepsy. Our analysis in patients using longitudinally collected brain MRIs (n = 17; 2 scans per patient; scan interval: 4.7 ± 1.9 years) revealed widespread progressive cortical thinning in bilateral dorsolateral frontal and fusiform cortices, right anterior cingulate (corrected p < 0.05). Cross-sectional analyses showed fas

High-quality, large-scale, semi-thin, & ultra-thin sections of the optic nerve in large animals: An optimized procedure.

Large animal model of optic nerve (ON) injury is an essential tool for translational medicine. Perfusion fixation with paraformaldehyde is mainly used for preparing the semi-thin (1-2 μm thick) and ultra-thin (<0.5 μm thick) sections of the ON tissues. However, this conventional fixation technique in large animals needs a large volume of fixatives, which increases the risk of toxic exposure and is environmentally unfriendly. Additionally, fixed residual ON cannot be used for other tests that require fresh tissue samples. Although conventional immersion fixation is feasible for preparing a semi

Toward an Understanding of Thin-Film Transistor Performance in Solution-Processed Amorphous Zinc Tin Oxide (ZTO) Thin Films.

Amorphous zinc tin oxide (ZTO) thin films are accessible by a molecular precursor approach using mononuclear zinc(II) and tin(II) compounds with methoxyiminopropionic acid ligands. Solution processing of two precursor solutions containing a mixture of zinc and tin(II)-methoxyiminopropinato complexes results in the formation of smooth homogeneous thin films, which upon calcination are converted into the desired semiconducting amorphous ZTO thin films. ZTO films integrated within a field-effect transistor (FET) device exhibit an active semiconducting behavior in the temperature range between 250

Exploration of Metallo-Gemini Surfactants in Thin Films.

Engineering molecular architectures enables the systematic investigation of how metal coordination and ligand geometry influence the fundamental interfacial properties of surfactants at the aqueous surface. Here, we report hexadecylpyridine-n-carboxylate metallo-gemini surfactants (MGSs) in which the organic linker is replaced by a coordinated metal cation, allowing for controlled self-assembly and tuning of interfacial organization. The precise chemical structure of the pyridine-n-carboxylate isomers (n = 2, 3, and 4; PAR, NAR, and INAR), together with their metal coordination modes, strongly

Rapid Macular Thinning as a Biomarker for Geographical Atrophy.

PURPOSE: To assess the rate of retinal thinning as a biomarker for incident late-stage age-related macular degeneration (AMD). METHODS: This retrospective cohort study included patients (aged ≥50 years) with ≥3 optical coherence tomography (OCT) macular scans ≥6 months apart. Eyes that developed ≥250 μm of complete retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) and outer retinal atrophy (cRORA) with associated hypertransmission through Bruch's membrane on OCT were considered to have developed geographic atrophy (GA). The spatial pattern of macular thinning was assessed using the ETDRS rings centered on the

Temperature-dependent failure of atomically thin MoTe2.

CONTEXT: In this study, we investigated the mechanical responses of molybdenum ditelluride (MoTe2) using molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. Our key focus was on the tensile behavior of MoTe2 with trigonal prismatic phase (2H-MoTe2) which was investigated under uniaxial tensile stress for both armchair and zigzag directions. Crack formation and propagation were examined to understand the fracture behavior of such material for varying temperatures. Additionally, the study also assesses the impact of temperature on Young's modulus and fracture stress-strain of a monolayer of 2H-MoTe2. METHOD:

Modeling Human Cardiac Thin Filament Structures.

Striated muscle contraction is regulated in a calcium-dependent manner through dynamic motions of the tropomyosin/troponin polymer, a multicomponent complex wrapped around actin-containing thin filaments. Tropomyosin/troponin sterically blocks myosin-binding at low-calcium concentrations but moves to expose myosin-binding sites at high-calcium concentrations leading to force development. Understanding the key intermolecular interactions that define these dynamic motions will promote our understanding of mutation-induced contractile dysfunction that eventually leads to hypertrophic cardiomyopat

Thin bronchoscopic cryobiopsy using a nasobronchial tube.

BACKGROUND: Transbronchial lung cryobiopsy is useful when diagnosing lung lesions. However, prevention of associated bleeding complications is essential. This study aimed to evaluate the safety and efficacy of our novel bronchoscopic cryobiopsy technique, which uses a long nasobronchial tube to prevent blood flooding the central airway. METHODS: Patients with localized or diffuse lung lesions were prospectively enrolled and underwent cryobiopsy using a 1.9 mm diameter cryoprobe and a 4.0 mm diameter thin bronchoscope under conscious sedation. For cryobiopsy, a long silicone tube (inner diamet

Mutation Analysis of Thin Basement Membrane Nephropathy.

Thin basement membrane nephropathy (TBMN) is characterized by the observation of microhematuria and a thin glomerular basement membrane on kidney biopsy specimens. Its main cause is heterozygous mutations of COL4A3 or COL4A4, which also cause late-onset focal segmental glomerulosclerosis (FSGS) or autosomal dominant Alport syndrome (ADAS). Thirteen TBMN cases were analyzed using Sanger sequencing, multiplex ligation-dependent probe amplification (MLPA), and exome sequencing. Ten heterozygous variants were detected in COL4A3 or COL4A4 in nine patients via Sanger sequencing, three of which were

Idiopathic focal calvarial thinning: A case report.

BACKGROUND: Calvarial bone thinning is a rare clinical entity, with only several cases reported (including Gorham-Stout disease), but the cause is often unknown. Here, we report such a case of unilateral calvarial thinning with an unknown cause. CASE DESCRIPTION: A 77-year-old woman undergoing imaging examination for unruptured cerebral aneurysms for the past several years noticed a progressive cranial deformity. Computed tomography revealed progressive thinning of the right parietal bone and cranial deformity but laboratory tests showed no causative findings. A cranioplasty was performed to

Extraordinary Radiation Hardness of Atomically Thin MoS2.

We demonstrate that atomically thin layered two-dimensional (2D) semiconductors are promising candidates for space electronics owing to their inherent and extraordinary resilience to radiation damage from energetic heavy charged particles. In particular, we found that ultrathin MoS2 nanosheets can easily withstand proton and helium irradiation with fluences as high as ∼1016 and ∼1015 ions/cm2, respectively, corresponding to hundreds or thousands of years of unshielded exposure to radiation in space. While radiation effects on 2D material-based field effect transistors have been reported in the

Cortical thinning and flattening in schizophrenia and their unaffected parents.

Background: Schizophrenia  is a neurodevelopmental disorder with high heritability. Widespread cortical thinning has been identified in schizophrenia, suggesting that it is a result of cortical development deficit. However, the findings of other cortical morphological indexes of patients are inconsistent, and the research on their relationship with genetic risk factors for schizophrenia is rare. Methods: In order to investigate cortical morphology deficits and their disease-related genetic liability in schizophrenia, we analyzed a sample of 33 patients with schizophrenia, 60 biological parents

Unilateral Limb Thinning -Thinking Out of the Box.

We report an unusual presentation in a 9-year-old girl with unilateral circumferential thinning of the entire right upper limb without any other neurological deficit, with normal nerve conduction and electromyography initially thought of as a neurodegenerative disorder based on clinical presentation. Magnetic resonance imaging of the upper limb showed partial lipoatrophy with normal glucose metabolism and lipid profile and negativity for HIV and autoimmune disease (panniculitis) with no family history of similar disorder. Remember to think out of box before labeling neurodegenerative disease.
