Chordoma of the thoracic spine--case report.

A 44-year-old woman presented with a thoracic chordoma with intrathoracic extension manifesting as complaints of lower extremity weakness, hypesthesia below the levels of T5-6, and sphincter incontinence. Almost total resection combined with anterior interbody fusion and stabilization was possible through a left transpleural transthoracic approach. She suffered recurrence after 2 years and was considered inoperable. Biopsy revealed a malignant chordoma with no sarcomatous differentiation. Chordoma is an uncommon malignant bone tumor originating from remnants of the embryonal notochord, occurri

[Lymphatics of the thoracic surface of the diaphragm especially located around the inferior surface of the pericardial sac].

The lymphatics on the thoracic surface of the diaphragm, especially lying around the lateral and posterior sides of the base of the cardiac sac, were examined in 68 adult Japanese cadavers macroscopically (37 males and 24 females, aged 45-92 years, no clinical evidences of neoplasms). In this observation, a vein which drained into the terminal portion of the inferior vena cava was observed. The lymph nodes in this region were located along the vein frequently (80.9%). The vein passed through the esophageal hiatus, or penetrated the diaphragm and finally communicated with veins around the esoph

Outcome of a dog with urinary bladder osteosarcoma treated with a total cystectomy and ureterocutaneostomy.

Thymoma is a common neoplasm of goats; however, literature regarding the best imaging modalities for diagnosis is scarce. In this case, multiple modalities were used during antemortem examination to develop a working diagnosis of a mediastinal mass as the cause of acute respiratory distress in a doe. Computed tomography was subsequently used in conjunction with postmortem examination to fully characterize the mass and confirm metastatic thymoma. This case emphasized how important advanced imaging can be for diagnosis and guiding treatment decisions; furthermore, it highlighted that a combinati

Pediatric Extramedullary Epidural Spinal Teratomas: A Case Report and Review of the Literature.

BACKGROUND: Teratomas in the pediatric population are most commonly found in the sacrococcygeal region. Pediatric intraspinal teratomas, however, are an exceedingly rare central nervous system (CNS) neoplasm. The clinical presentation of these intraspinal neoplasms can vary significantly and thus can be difficult to identify in infants less than one year of age where verbal expression and motor development are still lacking. Case Description. A 7-month-old, previously healthy male presented with a thoracic scoliosis and an asymptomatic right midupper thoracic spinal prominence present since bi

Multiple pulmonary nodules in AIDS: usefulness of CT in distinguishing among potential causes.

PURPOSE: To determine whether the computed tomographic (CT) appearances of multiple pulmonary nodules in patients with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) can help differentiate the potential infectious and neoplastic causes. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The thoracic CT scans obtained in 60 patients with AIDS and multiple pulmonary nodules were reviewed retrospectively by two thoracic radiologists who were blinded to clinical and pathologic data. The scans were evaluated for nodule size, distribution, and morphologic characteristics. CT findings were correlated with final diagnoses. RESULTS:

Prolonged survival of thoracic SMARCA4-deficient undifferentiated tumor with immune-related cystitis: a case report and literature review.

Thoracic SMARCA4-deficient undifferentiated tumor (SMARCA4-UT), as a rare and highly malignant neoplasm associated with a high mortality risk, is easily confused with SMARCA4-deficient nonsmall-cell lung cancer (NSCLC). To date, no standard and effective protocol for thoracic SMARCA4-UT has been established. Immunotherapy has demonstrated efficacy in advanced NSCLC, achieving unprecedented survival benefits. However, immune-related adverse events (irAEs) remain a significant clinical challenge. Here, we reported the first case of thoracic SMARCA4-UT with immune-related cystitis and hypothyroid

Radical excision combined with instrumented fixation in the management of thoracic epidural angiolipoma: a case report.

INTRODUCTION: Spinal angiolipoma is a benign uncommon neoplasm composed of mature lipocytes admixed with abnormal blood vessels. They account for only 0.04% to 1.2% of all spinal tumors. We present a case of thoracic epidural angiolipoma treated by combining radical resection with instrumented spinal fixation, without any surgical complication. CASE PRESENTATION: A 32-year-old Asian woman presented with dorsal epidural angiolipoma at the upper-thoracic level. She had a seven-month history of gradually worsening weakness and numbness in her lower extremities. Imaging studies of her thoracic sp

Thymolipoma in a cat.

Thymolipomas are rare benign thymic neoplasms recognised in humans, composed of mature adipose tissue and thymic tissue. An 8-year-old male domestic shorthair cat presented with anorexia, lethargy and vomiting secondary to the development of a thoracic effusion and an anterior mediastinal tumoral mass with fatty appearance. Histologically, the mass consisted of adipose tissue containing numerous cords and nests of cortical and medullary thymic tissue. No signs of thymic epithelial or lymphoid neoplastic proliferation were detected. The findings in this case are remarkably similar to the macros

Adult respiratory distress syndrome after limited thoracic radiotherapy.

The authors report three patients who developed fatal respiratory failure after limited or unilateral thoracic radiation therapy for neoplasms. The respiratory failure was characteristic of the adult respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) with refractory hypoxemia and diffuse bilateral infiltrates including areas of lung well outside of the radiation ports. No patient received drugs known to cause lung injury, and cardiogenic edema and infections were excluded. At autopsy the lungs exhibited interstitial fibrosis, Type II alveolar cell hyperplasia, inflammatory infiltrates, and squamous metaplas

Intraspinal metastatic disease in childhood cancer.

This paper describes the clinical manifestations and diagnostic studies in 26 children with intraspinal metastases of solid malignant neoplasms. The site of the metastatic lesion was verified in all cases by lumbar and/or cisternal myelography. Therapy consisted of Cobalt50 irradiation in 20 patients, of whom 11 (55%) manifested neurologic improvement. Recovery of ambulatory function was most favorable in lesiosn that involved the conus medullaris and cauda equina and spared the cervical and thoracic spinal cord. Early recognition and initiation of treatment before severe neurologic dysfunctio

Primary pulmonary histiocytic sarcoma with nodal and esophageal metastasis in a dog-imaging and anatomopathological aspects.

BACKGROUND: This report presents a case of esophageal and nodal metastasis in a primary pulmonary histiocytic sarcoma in a dog. Histiocytic sarcoma is a malignant neoplasm originating from histiocytic cells, characterized by its aggressive nature, high metastatic potential and high mortality rate. Pulmonary involvement occasionally results in pleural effusion and regional lymph node involvement, such as the tracheobronchial, sternal, and mediastinal lymph nodes. Thoracic radiography is the preferred complementary diagnostic test when respiratory disorders are suspected, as it can identify pulm

Varied foci of primary benign schwannoma of the thorax: a case series.

Schwannomas are the most common tumor of peripheral nerves. It comprises 1 to 2% of total thoracic tumor. Posterior mediastinum is the most common site in thorax. Hereby we are reporting two cases of schwannoma with different sites of origin. The classical presentation of schwannoma is an asymptomatic mass found on chest radiograph. This tumor is usually benign and slow growing. Imaging followed by histopathological examination is key to the diagnosis of this neoplasm. Resection of tumor cures the disease.

Primary solitary fibrous tumor of the retroperitoneum.

Solitary fibrous tumor is an uncommon neoplasm affecting adults and typically located in the pleura and can also occur in a large number of other extra thoracic sites. We present the case of a solitary fibrous tumor (SFT) of the retroperitoneum and describe their histopathological and immunohistochemical features. The identification of SFT in the retroperitoneum is of importance because its clinico-pathological behaviour is still unclear. The pathologist plays a fundamental role in establishing both the positive and differential diagnosis.

Diagnostic Challenge of a Vascular Liver Tumor With Pulmonary Hemorrhagic Metastases: A Case Report.

We report the case of a 64-year-old man with chronic liver disease who presented with abdominal discomfort, anorexia, and progressive weight loss, initially suspected to have hepatocellular carcinoma based on a large hepatic mass lacking definitive radiologic hallmarks. Multiphase CT demonstrated heterogeneous peripheral enhancement without classical washout, while thoracic imaging revealed numerous bilateral pulmonary nodules surrounded by ground-glass halos, indicating hemorrhagic metastases. These thoracic findings proved pivotal in directing diagnostic suspicion toward a vascular neoplasm.

[Total esophagoplasty using a double pedicled free graft from the jejunum: the last resort].

After repeated failures of classic oesophagoplasties (gastroplasty and coloplasty) a last chance reconstruction could rely on a free jejunal transplant. We report an exceptional and original case where digestive tract was re-established between the orostoma and the epigastric antrum. The patient has four neoplasms in the throat, thoracic oesophagus. After circular pharyngolarynectomy and total oesophagectomy, all the usable vascularized plasties had necrosed. The ultimate reconstruction was performed with a free jejunal transplant carrying two vascular bundles revascularized with the cervical

Giant cell tumor of the thoracic spine: An unusual cause for spinal cord compression.

Giant cell tumors (GCTs) of bone are uncommon neoplasms, typically located in the metaphysis of long bones, with rare occurrences in the spine, especially in the thoracic region. We report the case of a 34-year-old woman with a history of psoriasis and celiac disease, who presented with progressive inflammatory back pain and paraparesis. Imaging revealed an osteolytic mass at the T11 vertebra, causing dorsal spinal cord compression. Emergency surgery was performed, with histopathology confirming GCT. Despite initial recovery of motor function, surgical stabilization was later necessary to prev
