Molecular insights into the inhibition of MexCD-OprJ efflux pumps by menthol and thymol in Pseudomonas aeruginosa.

MexCD-OprJ is one of the major efflux systems which confers significant drug resistance to Pseudomonas aeruginosa. This study aimed to investigate the effects of two herbal compounds, menthol and thymol, on the MexCD-OprJ efflux pump in P. aeruginosa isolates. Ethidium bromide (EtBr) agar cartwheel, disk diffusion, and antibiogram tests were carried out for the isolates, with and without exposure to sub-MIC values of menthol and thymol. The expression level of the oprJ gene was evaluated through reverse transcription quantitative PCR (RT-qPCR). In order to check the interactions between the Op

Phytogenotoxicity of thymol and semisynthetic thymoxyacetic acid in pre/post emergence of model plants and weeds.

Herbicides are commonly used to control weed. However, some plants are resistant to such products. To identify less harmful herbicides, it is crucial to search for different mechanisms of action. Thymol is an easily acquired allelopathic compound, capable of producing its respective semisynthetic derivative, thymoxyacetic acid. The aim of this study was to determine the effects of thymol and thymoxyacetic acid molecules as bioherbicides in greenhouse at the concentration of 3 mmol L-1 in pre- and postemergence applications in five species: Amaranthus viridis L., Cucumis sativus L., Lactuca sat

Electrospun dual-layer core-shell janus membranes for unidirectional water transport and biphasic thymol release.

The development of Janus nanofibrous membranes represents a promising strategy for advanced moisture management and multifunctional materials. However, the practical application of biobased functional agents is often limited by their rapid release and short functional duration. To address this challenge, a novel dual-layer Janus nanofibrous membrane with dual core-shell structures was proposed by sequential coaxial electrospinning. The asymmetric structure consists of a hydrophobic inner layer composed of poly(lactic acid) (PLA) encapsulating thymol (THY), and a hydrophilic outer layer incorpo

Polyethylene glycol enhanced encapsulation of thymol in metal-organic framework nanocarriers for antimicrobial food packaging.

Thymol is a natural and environmentally friendly antibacterial agent. A novel Zirconium-based metal-organic framework (UiO-66) coated with polyethylene glycol (PEG) serves as thymol carrier. This carrier was incorporated into chitosan/polyvinyl alcohol (CS/PVA) films for antimicrobial applications. Characterization showed that PEG was coated on the surface of UiO-66 without disrupting the structure of UiO-66. The coating of PEG prevented the evaporation of thymol before 270 °C and decreased the release rate of thymol with retention of 12.3 %. UiO-66 retained its octahedral structure when combi

Comparative effects of thymol and vitamin E on nonalcoholic fatty liver disease in male Wistar rats.

Following the obesity epidemics, nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) has grown in prevalence and become a main cause of morbidity and death, intimately linked to cardiovascular disease, cancer, and cirrhosis. The key factor in the evolution of NAFLD is thought to be oxidative stress. Because most patients cannot change their lifestyle or dietary habits, a pharmaceutical strategy is now required to treat NAFLD. Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), including nonalcoholic steatohepatitis, is treated with vitamin E. (NASH). Vitamin E is also a powerful antioxidant that has been demonstra
